I've had my 1055 since July and have played several HDCD's on it and mine has always immediately decoded correctly. Are you in 2 ch mode before you start the disk?

I just tried switching on my RSX-1055, very similar to the 1066, and I have no problems switching from audio to video sources.

You might try looking at the Arcam. I think that fits with your new budget and presents a good choice for music.

Could it be you are hearing sound with less distortion and therefore are "fooled" into thinking it isn't as loud as it really is? Do you have access to an SPL meter?
