Sherbourn 5/1500A or Marantz MA6100 monoblocks?

PatrickS, If you do get the Sherbourn, be aware that it is VERY heavy (>80lbs). You may not want to put it directly on top of the H/K. It should be on a shelf that is well supported. The 5/1500A I believe is rack mountable (I have a 5/1500), but by your description, I'm guessing you will not...

    DIFFERNCE 5.1, DTS, Dolby prologic

Are you using the digital output of your DVD player into your receiver? It sounds like you are using the analog outs, which will only send ProLogic. The signal you are getting in 5.1 may be bleed from analog signal path. Just a thought. Chris

    I need some opinions

I'd second Guy's opinion; used is the way to go. Since you are looking at a budget, you should stick with 5.1. Since you will only be using 5.1, there are a lot of prior generation units of very good quality being sold cheap since people are upgrading to 6.1 and 7.1 formats. The Outlaw 1050 for...

If you are using 2 amps do they have to "match"?

The don't have to match. Some would say to use the JBL for all the fronts to keep a unified sound field up front. IN that case, but something cheaper in the back since they are not nearly as taxed. You won't notice what amp as long as it is reasonable (used NAD?). Another alternative is to...

Very good speaker in very bad places

I just saw a house where the owner had B&W Nautilus 802s placed directly in the 2 corners of a room (within 6" of either wall), and with a grand piano sitting directly in front, blocking one of the speakers. So a few questions came to mind and I thought the HTF might have fun debating them...

    MP3 & Higher-end Audio

I'm sure I'm going to get flogged for suggesting this, but MP3ing a vinyl collection can be a good thing. First off, here is a link regarding MP3 quality: http://www.r3mix.net/ Be sure to scan the Myths section which covers many of the prior posts. Using Lame and the --r3mix parameter, I...

    Buyer Beware

Sixth Ave Electronics on rte. 22 in NJ are terrible. The staff are pushy and not very knowledgeable. The equipment is poorly set up and listening is a joke. (Ported speakers less than an inch from the rear wall and the salesman thought I was nuts when I asked him to move them.) Bait and switch...

    Yamaha RX-V530/Paradigm Monitor 7's

You also may consider the RX-V630 for the future flexibility of pre-outs for all channels. It will provide you a little future proofing, especially if you find the power inadequate after you bring it home. An external amp is a great upgrade step down the line. Chris

    NAD plus NHT?

I've had a NAD 214 driving NHT SB-3s and was very satisfied. The NHTs are very precise and revealing, and also aren't very efficient. Without a decent amp, they would be very fatiguing to listen to. The NAD is smooth and has ample power to drive them without straining. Give 'em a listen. I...

    Opinions of NAD amps

I'll give a quick :emoji_thumbsup: thumbs :emoji_thumbsup: up to NAD. I've been using a NAD 214 for about 8 years almost continuously with no problems and great sound. I was looking to add 2 more to my collection to power my HT, but added a Sherbourn 5 channel instead. It sounds better, but has...

    Yamaha DSP

Cyrus, I guess if you read my past posts, then you have seen my reasons for the 630 vs. the 530/730 models here. Basically, I needed the pre-outs to handle a 2 channel separate amp (NAD 214) that I din't want to go to waste. As it turned out, the difference in sound from the onboard amps was...

    Yamaha DSP

I think the receiver sounds very good as a pre-amp for music. In another thread I described my results with the V630 and the need for separate amplification, at least with my inefficient speakers. I was surprised at how much improvement was made by utilizing those line-outs on the back! ;)...

    Yamaha DSP

Like John D, I think I may have to go back and re-explore the DSP programs. My early experiments were unsatisfying and so I wrote it off as a gimick. So let me ask a few questions of those who seem to use the DSP a lot, 1) I have a lower level Yamaha (RX-V630), is the DSP of the caliber of...

    Pre-Pro suggestions

I think I fit the bill for having this setup. I'm running a Yamaha RX-V630 (~$350), with a Sherbourn 5/1500 amp (bought used from someone on HTF :D ). I've been extemely happy with it! IMHO this Yamaha amp sounded TERRIBLE! It did not sound like the specs they print in the manual. However...

Do you leave your amplifiers on all the time?

The fact that the power switch is logical rather than manual implies it is probably just switching a relay in the unit. I bet if you are reasonably handy with a soldering iron, screwdriver and voltmeter you could track down the logic of the switch and where the relay is/how it works. Most...

Thanks! I just canabalized a transformer and some headphones and now have a nicely switched amp! ;) I love this place! Chris

How does a 12 volt trigger work?

Does anyone have an answer to the first question Niel_S asked? I have an amp that is triggerable, but a reciever that has no trigger plug. It's a Sherbourn 5/1500 and the back panel labels the trigger plug as 3-30v. Can I plug a wall wort into the reciever to trigger the amp on and off...

need good set of speakers for $650~

I like my NHT SB-3s and there associated center. They cost about that much. Very neutral to my ears. Surprisingly good bass for there size, although a good sub is recommended. Chris

Speaker System for 60% Music 40% HT w/ $2100 Budget

Perhaps my experience will be of use. I recently purchased a Yamaha V-630 receiver and I would strongly recommend putting some of your speaker budget toward a separate amp for the mains! That's a lot of money and the Yamaha isn't capable of driving the speakers with enough quality to do them...

OK, Why do we buy Bookshelf?

I recently moved to bookshelf speakers because my old speakers were a safety hazard! I was using a set of KLH Model 6s on 12" stands, and with their weight and the instability of stands, I was afraid my infant son would pull them onto himself while learning to stand/walk! Those things are just...

    NHT Subs and other questions

I have seen twice now a statment like "there are better out there" regarding the NHT SubOnei, but with no further clarification. I guess the "better" are the Hsu Vtu-2 and SVS 25-31pc? I am really curious to hear someone expound on this. I am considering a set of NHT SB3 mains, undecided...

NHT? Axiom? Moving from Stereo to HT

All of your input is really helpful, thanks! So how 'bout a little more explanation. I've read in this thread (and another) that the SubOnei sub is surpassed by Hsu and SVS. What about the detached bass control unit on the NHT? Is that a gimic, or useful? Considering the smaller size of...

SURVEY: Are you willing to sacrifice A LITTLE sound quality for MUCH BETTER looks?

I always thought I was a sound first guy until I saw the Vandersteens. I couldn't fathom putting those in my livingroom, and that was when I was still single! So I guess in the end, I would view a speaker as both a piece of art and of function. Especially a prominant floor-standing unit.
