Casework: bigger drivers are slower than smaller drivers

No it would be quieter. That's what volume controls are for; turn it up. "Faster" and "slower" are not terms that have any objective meaning in speaker design. They are subjective words with no accepted definition (everybody's is different) and no accepted way to measure it. The quicker you can...

Casework: bigger drivers are slower than smaller drivers

Vaughn, you're making this much harder than it needs to be. You've been given all the right answers but I think you're getting bogged down in the details. So back to basics. First, these are not two permanent magnets. Rather there is an electromagnet (the voice coil) inside a permanent...

    ANSI lumens

The measurement method may be standardized but they don't require the projector to be calibrated for a good picture before they measure it. Most of the manufacturers just crank everything to the max and take a measurement. After calibration, most projectors are only 1/2 to 2/3 as bright as their...

    Getting started with active crossovers

Don't forget Linkwitz's general purpose circuit boards. Using them, along with his circuit examples, you can build a crossover with time alignment, baffle step compensation etc., not just a plain vanilla textbook crossover which is only marginally useful in most cases. PCB order page...

    Measuring XMAX without special equipment?

It won't tell you anything about asymmetry but you can make a wedge micrometer from a piece of stiff paper, as shown on Siegfried Linkwitz's page. It will measure peak-peak excursion while playing a test tone. You'll probably need a bigger one than the pic for the Stryke driver. Play a tone and...

    I Hate T-Nuts. Alternatives?

Drywall screws and glue.... Drill a (small) pilot hole, drive in a screw to tap the hole, back the screw out, and squirt some yellow glue into the hole. The MDF will suck up the glue and it will dry to a hard tapped hole. After the glue is dry, mount the driver. If you mess up and strip a...

    wire loom fire hazard question

No. Your amp's protection circuits will cut in (or the amp will be toast and quit working) long before your speaker wires ever get hot. Smoke from the amp - possible. Smoke from the wires - not likely. (I shouldn't do this to someone who is obviously worried about this stuff but..... just...

A small tribute to Wiggins, et.al.

You're the only one who can decide that. Personally, distortion is a Big Deal for me. You asked why people need so many big drivers and that's why. Some people enjoy the sound of high distortion - it gives the bass more "punch" or "slam" when the 80Hz harmonic is louder than the 40Hz...

A small tribute to Wiggins, et.al.

It's more about low distortion than winning SPL contests. It takes a lot of woofage to keep the distortion low at reasonably loud volumes - either a high quality long stroke driver like the Tumult or several lesser drivers.

Tempest too big, please help me get to 20hz

A DPL12 in a sealed 75 liter sealed box models really well. http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=3476 "Frankly, if you don't have the room or architectural support for a true IB sub, using arrays of the DPL12 in 75 liter boxes will give you essentially the same thing. The F10 is...

    Behringer Europower 2500 Fan questions

Since the Behringer is a QSC clone, I imagine the same quiet fans would work. QSC uses a 24 volt fan and these models are said to be pretty quiet. Delta AUB0824L Delta AFB0824L Panaflo (Panasonic) FBA08A24L Papst TYP8414L SanyoDenki 109RO824H402

    DEQ2496 amazing! Personal review

Yep, you should use pink noise with an RTA. White noise has equal energy at each frequency. RTA and pink noise have a logarithmic energy distribution - each octave, or fraction of an octave, contains equal energy. PS - good call buying the DEQ. The RTA alone makes it worth the extra money...

MDF to Baltic Birch-- different blade for cutting?

Good advice so far. One thing about yellow glue. The wet rag method works but, with some wood, there's the potential for the water to soak a bit of glue into the wood if you aren't careful. I've found it easier to let the glue dry until it's gummy but not hard and then just scrape it off with a...

Just got some 'fillable' stands. What to fill them with?

Sand. It comes in 90 pound sacks, it's on the same shelf as the sacked concrete at the lumber yard, and it's um, err, dirt cheap.:) Sand is just about as heavy as concrete, has better damping properties (try tapping on the two of them and compare), and you can dump it out if you ever move...

I want a glass box for my PJ, anyone know where to turn?

Plexi would be fine for most of the case but I'd want the light to shine through optical-grade glass so I didn't get reflections and distortions. Over at AVS, a lot of people are using the glass from Edmund Scientific for their hush boxes. http://www.edmundoptics.com/IOD/Disp...productid=1919

Finally finished by Dual Tumult Infinte Baffle

Cool sub! Yeah, you need more power. The Tumult is an extremely inefficient driver. This is what I get from one of SL's spreadsheets to drive a single Tumult to Xmax with the voice coils in series. These are the 8 ohm power ratings of the amp. The impedance is high at these frequencies so...

Does Winisd warn when Xmax will be exceeded?

Download the alpha of WinISD pro. It will tell you everything you need to know about excursion, etc. It isn't completely stable on my computer but it does offer all kinds of nifty graphs that aren't in the earlier one.

Guys, I thinks there's some misunderstanding here. Jon isn't talking about a plywood panel. Here's the whole quote to put things in context.

    Veneerer respect

Errrr, John, a couple of points..... First, Mark used the glue you so strongly advocate and that's the one he had so much trouble with. Second, you say no professionals use contact cement but I think our resident long-time cabinet shop owner Pete M. would beg to differ. He goes through...

    3-way fronts (good idea?)

You could probably change Wayne's bass tuning without affecting the crossover much. As he's using more or less the same drivers you have in mind, and he has an excellent reputation as a crossover designer, I'd just go ahead and use his drivers and his crossover. I'd probably even copy his box...

Need ideas for child-safe speaker stands

I'd screw the speakers to the stands as others have mentioned. That putty stuff isn't very strong. As well, if you're lucky enough to have a carpet over plywood floor, you can screw the stands to the floor so they are impossible for kids and dogs to knock over. Not recommended for hardwood or...

What I'd like to see out of Adire...

Guys, big Xmax (actual excursion, not rated) in a midrange driver is a Bad Thing (Martha :) ). Having a driver capable of big Xmax is a Good Thing. Using that Xmax is a Bad Thing. IM (Doppler) distortion % = .91 * (Xmax in mm) * (highest frequency in kilohertz) Source: JohnK on the...

    Adire Tumult

Dipole that sucker before you sell it. Just temporarily mount it on a 2'x4' piece of MDF, prop it up in the room and EQ it more or less flat with your Audio Control unit. After you pick your jaw up off the floor, you can start refining the design by perusing the linkwitzlab.com site. ;)
