I think this trend is a disturbing one as well. There is a $10-15 difference in price between the 2 versions. For that much money the extras had better be pretty compelling, particularly since they'll likely only be watched once. If Fox was really concerned about making money from this release...
The R2 dvd sure looked P/S to me. The framing didn't look right fro open matte. What a travesty. After a promising start these guys are looking more like Cock Lorber.
Well this price point is what makes netflix so valuable! My main beef with HBO isn't their high prices (not that I'm excited about them though) but their horribly long release lags. They stay at least a season behind on dvd, which means that a new viewer can't catch up prior to the start of the...
I had the same skipping problem at 26-27 and called the above number. The person at Fox said they discovered the problem on Tuesday and are taking names and addresses to send replacements to in a couple of weeks. If it really is that easy then kudos to Fox for such a timely response.
I would agree with Jon's assessment. If you want a movie with a similar theme that is actually funny, check out "Wet Hot American Summer" which you can get from DDD for $9.35 The extra four bucks are worth it.
I guess your situation seems to boil down to this: will your HDTV display a PAL signal? I don't know the answer to that but I'm guessing someone in the TV section of the hardware forums could help you. You'll want to get this figured out as the majority of R2/R4 dvds are PAL (Japaneses discs...
You may want to check out www.nicheflix.com[/url] as well. They are an all region on-line movie rental service, like Netflix. I've been a member for a couple of months and have been really happy (not to mention enjoying great dvds from around the world without having to buy them all, blindly)...
I agree with the above. I found it magnificent and not sentimental at all, which was pretty amazing considering that 99% of movies that cover this sort of subject matter end up pretty maudlin. The sisters who played the daughters absolutely blew me away - some of the most naturalistic...
I have also noticed a big slowdown. Things were running very smoothly here in Mpls for a long time - quick check-in and send out. In the last few weeks it has really slowed down. I'm also getting annoyed. Based on the comments of others perhaps it's just a temporary slowdown. I hope that is the...
Much of the discussion of this thread has been made under the incorrect assumption that each film is controlled world-wide by the same company. This is certainly not the case, particularly these days, as american studios sell off foreign rights to help cover the cost of making the film in the...
It appears that the Region 2 UK release is 2.35:1. It also appears that the UK version is only DD 2.0 I was trying to decide which version to pick up (R2 being a bit pricier) but I guess I know now. What a shame but thanks for the heads up.
My experience has been the same as Doug's - they have basically all the Criterions that don't have a non-Criterion counterpart. They have really improved their acquisitions of Criterion over the last year or so and always have the new releases on the street date. The wide availability of...
I enjoyed this film (not as much as many of you) but have a couple of problems with it. First, I didn't think it was very effective as an anti-drug movie. the drugs simply hover in the background and are simply eluded to. You never get a first hand account of their impact. I also think the...
I believe the OAR for Pushing Hands is 1.33:1, as it was shot on 16mm. It's a decent dvd and a good film (not as poslished as later efforts though and the woman who plays the wife is WAY annoying). I thought Ride With the Devil was interesting but if you aren't up on the history of the border...
I avoid preordering titles that will be heavily discounted the wek of their release (like Indy will be), as I can usually find a better deal in a B&M, but I always preorder catalog or lower profile releases. The upside of perhaps paying a bit more than you otherwise might have is that you should...
I don't believe that Play.com ships to North America. I always use Link Removed They have good prices, great service and their shipping prices to N. America are cheaper tahn many domestic retailers. Amazon UK is also widley used (their shipping prices are high but they don't charge the VAT for...
I always use bensonsworld.com for my UK R2 purchases. Their prices are good, they are nice and shipping is cheap (around 1 pound sterling per disc) to N. America.
I suppose it's just selfish of me, but I don't necessarily agree. It's of course not a bad thing to put it back in theaters but it's release on video could have just the same impact. Plenty of films don't really find their audience until video and then really explode. With the publicity...
Umm, so it's really cool that Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated feature but the impact of that win may not be so benign. I saw this on Nausicaa.net today and I'm going to be pissed if this is the case. Just give us the damn dvd already. "In a good news/bad news situation...
The main reason I don't order from Amazon UK is that their prices are so much higher. While you paid 11.58 you could have gotten from Bensonsworld for 6.99. That's a big enough difference for me.
Yes, that's how it works. I find it's a great way to keep track of a movie you hear about so you don't forget about it. Every time I go to a rental place the names of every movie I want to see seems to evaporate out of my head. Never a problem with Netflix. I've been using Netflix for 2+ years...
I've had consistently good luck with Link Removed I've ordered several discs from them and have been very imprssed with price, service and speed of shipping. They used to have free worldwide shipping (now it's free within the UK) but it's till cheap (around 1 pound sterling, which is about...
If you are R2/Pal compatible it is out in the UK. It's being repackaged with "Life and death of Col. Blimp" as a 2 pack on 3/17/03 for crazy cheap (around 10 pounds sterling, or about $15). There are other P&P films out in the UK that aren't out in R1: 49th Parallel, A Canterbury Tale. Down to...
Do you think the transfer, et al will be the same? Is that usually the case with a dual release like this? Alliance has a bad track record with transfers. I want to make sure I get the highest possible image quality even if I have to suffer with the terrible US artwork. Can any Canadians allay...
What is so frustrating about this is that Columbia is content to put out a lacklaster barebones disc but still charge a premium price. Why would anyone buy this disc when so many other great classic films are being treated with the respect they deserve and are priced very reasonably? It's really...
In addition to S&S and Film Comment, I've enjoyed reading Filmmaker and RES (focusing on digital filmmaking). S&S is the only one I read without fail though.
