    Help me pick an integrated!!!

The alesis monitor ones are 4 ohm speakers, if memory is correct. I am not sure on their sensitivity, so that would definitely play a role in your amp selection. I would make sure that your amp can adequately drive a 4 ohm load. If you are DIY inclined, you can make your own gainclone...

    Difference between optical and coaxial?

Brett, I totally understand where you are coming from:) Myself, I have made my own cables and done a bit of experimenting on the DIY front, but I will say the magnitude of any differences in cables is always reflected by the quality of the associated equipment. I will also say that the magnitude...

    Limitations of Outlaw 950

Kevin, I'm not the only with this kind of bias, as Steve Guttenberg pretty much echoed the same sentiment in his review of the Atlantic Tech pre-pro (Outlaw 950 clone for the un-initiated). I agree its not too difficult to adjust the subwoofer level for the different modes, it's something I've...

    Difference between optical and coaxial?

Bret, I don't understand your "bullspit" comments. You don't have to believe it if you don't want to but that doesn't change the fact that the quality of the glass does matter -- just try to be objective:) rather than invoking all the voodoo. Hey there are alot more important things going on...

    Limitations of Outlaw 950

I'd say the biggest limitation on a day to day level is the lack of ability to set the subwoofer levels at different levels for the various inputs and for the different processing modes (DD, DTS, DPL II, stereo, etc). For Prologic II, for example, the bass from the subwooofer seems to be at a...

    Difference between optical and coaxial?

Hi everyone, I just wanted to let everyone know that the glass fiber optical cable that Jerry Davis posted on the link above is a really high quality cable, when compared to much more expensive, name brand wires. Some rumblings on this cable have been reported on Audio Asylum have been very...

    Flooding! Help! Advice needed!

Having a sump pump is very important, but it will not prevent the problem as the water is coming in through his windows. The sump pump can only pump out the water that collects in the sump. And the sumps are connected to the various drains. If the water is getting in through the windows then the...

    $100/speaker budget?

Check out http://murphyblaster.com/ the usher 2 way and the MBOW1 are probably the closest to your allotted budget. Dennis Murphy is a well regarded crossover designer in DIY circles and posts frequently in madisound's forums http://www.gr-research.com/performer/av1.htm is also just a bit...

    New speaker website: Bob

I presume the dBx driverrack allows you to set the various of attenuation for each range of the crossover -- sort of like a digital L-pad but much more flexible. Is that correct?

    New speaker website: Bob

Very, very nice project. I don't know too many people who would characterize Focal drivers as "cheap" ;) I'm wondering if there is any reasonably priced competitor to the dBx driverrack that accepts digital inputs. It seems the dBX is selling for about $450.

    Digital noise from DVD player...

Here's an excerpt from another good link. http://www.themorgue.org/audio/pioneer-dv525/ Chassis I damped the lid of the unit with (if you can believe this) Armstrong 12''x12'' adhesive backed vinyl floor tiles from your local Home Depot/Lowes for the bargain price of $0.59 per square foot...

    Digital noise from DVD player...

Goto http://www.soundstage.com/maxdb/maxdb.htm Scroll down to and click on the Modifying a DVD/CD Transport or Player -- Part 1 and 2 sections. Basically, providing damping on the transport and the chassis does help with the mechanical noise quite a bit. I've done it to my Pioneer. It...

Question about DVC subwoofers, short circuiting a coil, and more

Javier, Maybe you are talking with the wrong type of carpenters. Consult with some cabinetmakers -- there is no reason why any self respecting cabinetmaker should not be able to build you a subwoofer cabinet.

    classe ca-100 bridged

The 2 ca-300's are in a totally different class than using 3 ca-100's. If the price is the same go with the ca-300's. Also bridging can introduce noise/hum and other issues if the amp is not properly designed and also reduces the ability to drive low impedance loads. I'm not sure about the...

    DIY Microphone Preamp Plan?

If you are looking to build the mic preamp for the fun of it or the learning experience, then DIY is for you. However, there are a lot of used mic preamps in your price range. On ebay, you can get Bogden mic/phono tube preamps relatively inexpensively (about $20). Or you could get a newer unit...

    DIY SVHS Cables?

I've read the 7700a is better. Furthermore, shielding is very important in video cables. You can add a telescoping shield for even better results. BTW, I own some generic SVHS cables that have the same zip configuration as the 7700a.

New Belden/Canare cable building web site

Very nice to have a consolidated webpage for cables. If I may address some things you mentioned on the site, for S-video cables, you state that the Belden 1808 is Belden's best. I just want to point out that others have pointed out that Belden 7700a is superior. Also, you could use a...

Thoughts on a sealed, 5 cu. ft. down-firing AV-12 sub?

Jack, I looked into the Rhythmik sub amp. It definitely looks intriguing. Have you compared this sub amp with any others? I am running a Shiva with both voice coils in parallel with a Sherwood Newcastle 9080 amp, which has probably about 180 watts into 4 ohms. Amazingly, the bass from the...

How much would an Amp help?

A 2 channel amp will help, but, you are always going to be limited by the Yamaha as the pre. Based on my experience, the preamp is just as important as the amp for music. If you want to keep things relatively affordable, you could also consider a 2 channel integrated amp with HT bypass, if possible.

I've ordered several things from J&R without a hitch. You can always use pricegrabber.com to check the feedback on a seller before hand. That can save a lot of headaches in the long run.

FS: Sima SCC color corrector: back up your DVD's $85

I have a Sima SCC color corrector for sale with original box and manual. It removes the copy protection from your DVD's or VCR's to allow you to copy them. I only used it a handful of times to back up some children's DVD's to VHS that are liable to get destroyed by the kids. It makes crisp...

    Phono preamp question?

Last year, Robert A Fowkes started a thread on buying a new phono preamp to go with his Outlaw 950. I suggest you do a search and look it up as it had a lot of posts and recommendations from budget prices and up. One word you could use in the search string is "Graham Slee" who is a phono stage...

    The truth about internet e-tailers!

It all depends on the brand in terms of the warranty coverage they'll give for internet or mail order purchases. Sony is fine. Denon is more restrictive.
