DVD with it all for 250 or less???

Why does everyone care so much about a layer change? They only last not but a second, don't they? It would seem that priority should be on PQ, detail, ease of use, ability to read various formats, but to base a decision on a layer change?? I just don't get it.

What's the best way to purchase DirectTV?

Only CC carries the new series II directivo units. If you aren't familiar with these things, they can record the digital bitstream directly from the sats so they don't have to decode anything until you are ready to "play it back". In other words, the quality is higher than the "high quality" of...

    Offset and grayscale Q....

Sorry folks, but I can't seem to find anywhere on the net exactly how offset relates to grayscale, if it does at all. Can anyone give a 2 sentence answer? Thanks....

What's the best way to purchase DirectTV?

Go to Circuit City and get the new series II DirecTivo combined unit. You won't be sorry and will never know how you did it before without this unit. Tivocommunity has a lot of resources.

What's the best deal on a 32" HDTV capable TV?

Well, if you want the BEST bang for your buck, I picked up the 3097 for $899 by picking up directly at their warehouse in Queens. This one has better sound and has 3:2.

    Offset and grayscale Q....

Hi, Just wondering if anyone can explain how the Cr and Cb offset controls relate to changes in overall grayscale. Drives seem to control grays at higher IRE's and cutoffs at lower IRE's. But, do these offset controls affect grayscale, or are they used to adjust the actual color decoder? I am...

What's the best deal on a 32" HDTV capable TV?

I would go for the Samsung 30" 3098 widescreen TV. It is a very attractive set and can be calibrated for a picture that competes with the other 'big' names. For most DVDs, you are actually getting more viewable screen area than the 32" TVs.

Dumb question about progressive scan and reverse 3:2 pulldown.

Hi, It seems that either I am confused or others are confused judging from their posts. I would like to purchase both a TV and DVD soon. Would like to purchase HDTV. Now, would progressive DVD player make any difference with a TV that has line doubler anyway? Or, is the only benefit the 3:2...

    Dilemmas

Thanks for advice. The Sony model is PFM-510A2W, 42" 1024x1024. He said it is a US model. Does this differ from one that is offered in Europe. I see that it can accept both PAL and NTSC. I will look into the escrow thing. As I am unfamiliar with such procedures, can anyone point me to a...

    Dilemmas

Ugh...I really do not want to let this deal go, but I found and auctioneer in Europe who has a new Sony 40" plasma and will sell one to me for $1700 shipped. Now, this sounds way to0 good to be true. It probably is, but what if.... Aside from the obvious, is there an issue with these sets...

    3-2 Pulldown

So, to get this straight, the film material on a VHS tape is indeed in the native format at 24fps and a TV equipped with 3:2 pulldown would be able to enhance the playback. Presumably then this problem is moot if the film source is a network broadcast as the video field/frame is dictated...

    Sammy's direct views

Ryan, So if I understand your post correctly, those sets that do NOT do the pulldown, such as the current Samsungs I'm considering, they will present every 5th video frame as a mixed frame, one field corresponding to one film frame and the other field corresponding to the next film frame...

I think I will check out BJ's, thanks for the tip. I think sat should still be thought of as analog, because it is the sat box, not the TV, which decodes the digital into analog, correct? I thought anything traditional 480i (OTA, sat, cable, etc.) is considered analog, and everything else...

So, the newer chip might be better at upconverting the 480i to 480p and may offer a smoother transition? Also, from what I understand about the 3:2 pulldown, it may offer the ability to reduce the judder during slow pans in a film, correct? I think I could live without that, as it probably...

Mike, Are you the person who got a price match at Sears? If so, did you just bring in a printout of an HTML page? Do they actually go online to verify?

Well, unfortunately, space is premium in my smaller apartment, and a screen is just out the question. I just want to make sure that the HD sets in these particular sizes will indeed upconvert my sat signal well in enough to justify their added costs. I would rather purchase the HD set and keep...

In keeping with Jack's post regarding quality over quantity, I will most likely be opting for either the 27 or 32" Samsung direct view HD. As I have a small 20" analog right now, I know I will be absolutely floored with the improvement with respect to HD, and I am quite sure that either of...

    Samsung 27" HDTV: upconverting?

Any normal 480i NTSC source will also be upconverted to 480p by line-doubling. I don't really know if this can be turned off, although I don't know why you would. Perhaps with VHS, you may not want a line-doubler. Correct if wrong.
