If my usage is any indication it was dead before it started. I have an early Panny 3D set and can't say I've watched more than 2 movies in it. I forgot that it even had 3D. It was a gimmick that basically sucked on the small screen, and by small I mean anything smaller than an IMAX theater...
I don't know what did it, but its working now. Dowsn't sound like I did any damage either, but I'm not stressing it yet. I must have had a bad connection, but I was able to get my main to respond to the signal without problem, and when I reconnected the sub I couldn't. Go figure. On the...
Question: Does gently pushing on the driver cone generate a grinding or grating sensation, or does it move smoothly back and forth? -Pushing at the driver is smooth as silk. Question: Is this an original CS driver, or an Improved Standard Driver (shipping since mid-December 2001)...
My 20-39 cs has stopped making any sounds. I checked the cabling, the sub amp, the receiver, all by unplugging the speaker cable from the SVS and plugging it into the woofer input of my bi-wireable main speaker. When I did that my main worked as expected with a test tone. Swapping directly back...
Funny thing is, my 20-39 sub is never noticed by ANYONE. Even my wife admits it "hides in plain sight". Mine is in the corner behind my main. It is unfortunately out of order at the moment. The receiver I used as a sub-amp blew. A PE 250w plate amp is on the brown truck. Good thing I have mains...
For practical reasons, I do the veneer last. You'll be handling the box a lot during construction and you don't want to mess up the veneer. That being said, it is easier to veneer first, then cut the hole, since then all of your measurements include the veneer thickness, and the circle gets...
Have you considered a front projector? For $2500 you can get the Sony HS-10, which is WXGA true HD widescreen. Or for even less, the Panasonic L300u which is 960x540, less resolution but also very nice. Or for $1500, you can get a Sanyo Z1, same rez as the panny, or the infocus x1, DLP at...
There is also the Audax center, with the w/tm/w design. This has a tweeter above a 5" midrange flanked by 6.5" woofers. It is said to avoid the lobing problem in the critical frequencies since these are produced by the single midrange. I've built one myself, and I sit off-axis frequently and...
Rosenzwieg Lumber in da Bronx, or Rode & Horn Lumber in Brooklyn are the only places I know in the NY area. There must be someplace on LI. There's a woodworkers warehouse on Sunrise Hwy in Suffolk, either Patchogue or Sayville. They might have, but I've never been in there.
On line check out...
J&R has the CP72 for 229 in black or silver. This was not a hard to find item in NY. Panasonic has been shipping in bulk. and it is appearing in stores. They even had it at a WIZ store that was closing up (for much more money 279 i think.)
I just picked up the Panny CP72, a progressive, dvd-audio, 5 disc changer. I am only using it in interlaced via s-video mode and it blows away the RV30 it replaced. Even my wife, who couldn't care less about most of this stuff commented. She said now we need a big TV to appreciate this. For $229...
I didn't think a hand plane would work on MDF, since it didn't have grain, but I never tried it either. I took a woodworking class and the instructor hand planed a rough cut cherry board about 2' x 6" down flatter and smoother than a Delta jointer did, in only a few minutes more time. You...
I recently used my PC VS333 random orbit sander to smooth the edges for veneering. It worked great. I had one problem side where the inside was much higher than the edge and it took it off in no time. Use a flush trim router bit if the panel edge is higher, this will save some time. You should...
Sounds ok to me. I wouldn't go too crazy on the bracing if you're using plywood over mdf. Should be plenty stiff and dead. You should only need the ply over the front/rear. The sides should be ok without it.
There is also a new place on e4th between bway and lafayette, directly across the street from Tower Records. As far as Stereo Exchange goes, I haven't had any bad experiences there, but I've never asked for auditions of the higher end stuff. I did go there to look at CD players and they gave...
It would go in a bay window, which is oddly shaped, but still has 3 walls around it. My other question still stands. Would altering the basic cube into something a lot more rectangular, but retaining the volume, be OK.
Very nice work. Also a good step by step guide for the beginnning speaker builder. Angled cuts can be difficult to get just right, but I'm thinking of doing some for by sub project.
I plan on using some hefty oak legs and rails to compensate for the weight. Oak is pretty damn strong and the rails will prevent sag. I also had a thought about the top surface. Since the thing will vibrate like crazy, I'll inlay a soft surface into it, as in a leather top desk, so I can put...
Due to WAF, I am considering building a subwoofer that will blend into a room as a table. Not as the usual cube on the floor type, but as console type table with legs. What I am thinking of is to build a Shiva based Adire alignment sub, but stretching the box dimensions lengthwise, and...
I usually go for the sound. I have a pair of Spica TC-50 which have an unusual sloping front. Other than the novelty factor, I hate the way they look. I also have a DIY center which I haven't veneered yet, raw MDF with birch plywood front. Pretty ugly. I keep telling my wife I'll finish it soon...
You might also want to consider Gloss black Formica or other brand of laminate. Its not too difficult to apply and it will give you the look you want. Get a laminate trimming bit for your router if you don't already have one.
Outlaw 1050. It doesn't have DPLII but it does everything else better than the other brands in the price range. My guess is the price, currently $500, will also come down soon.
I'm running an Audax HT center channel, with a pair of Spica TC-50s as the fronts off of a 1050. It sounds great. I don't know any reason the full lcr set would be a problem. The outlaw produces pretty clean power, past its rated 65wpc.
