    Kenwood HTB-504 or JBL NSP?

I strongly suggest that you either listen to the speakers you buy before you buy or that you are able to return them if you don't like them. I bought the JBL NSP1 setup online without hearing them. Overall, I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, they are great speakers for the price. I was just...

    DIY screen

I'd get the white paint, or the grey if you are real concerned about black levels and try it. Paint is cheap. If you don't like it, you can then explore some of the more expensive alternatives. Good Luck.

Help me choose a complete system for $4000

Based on the size of the room, and the fact that he isn't a big electronics nut, I'd downgrade the receiver from the 2802 to the 1802. The Denon 1802 will give you more than enough power for a 12x14 room. I'd put the savings into a better quality TV which he will probably enjoy more.

Denon AVR-682 or Kenwood VR 507?

David, Do a search on this forum for the JBL NSP1 set. There is a thread about these being on sale at Buy.com for $229 delivered. Buy.com sold so many that they were backordered, but I think they got them in and are starting to ship. Some people have had luck going to JandR.com and having...

    Denon Receiver Advice Needed!

I've seen a lot of recommendations on this forum for the Denon 1802 receiver as a good choice for an entry level but good quality receiver. I've found the 1802 online for about $360. I don't see much difference between the 1802 and the Denon AVR-882 which sells for about $329. In fact, the 1802...

Help me choose a complete system for $4000

See what is important to your father. If your father is like mine, he doesn't hear a big difference in speaker quality and would get more bang for the buck from a larger, higher quality screen. If that's the case, don't skimp on the speakers, but don't overdo it. Good Luck Mark

    Where to buy DVDs???

Also, if you don't mind used, Blockbuster sells off their rentals at $9.99-$14.99. The ones in my area have 25% off sales on a fairly regular basis. Also, half.com sometimes has decent deals.

Dedicated HT room, live with what was done or remodel?

Rich, You have to decide how much of a perfectionist you are when dealing with home theater. A square room may not be perfect, but a lot of people have enjoyable home theaters in square rooms. The fact that you are even asking this question indicates that you are looking to do this right. My...

    Sears Price Match and WM40

Each Sears stores handle the price match differently. Some will match anything and others will only match specific stores or web sites. Call a few of the stores by you and ask if they will match prices from the web. If you get someone who says yes, see if they have it in stock at their store. If...

Do you ever try to convince your wife/girlfriend/whatever, that she actually BENEFITS

James, You don't want to run the risk of damaging or ending a relationship because of your home theater hobby so try this instead. First, open up an account that she knows nothing about and start saving money for purchases. Whenever you get a new piece of equipment, tell her a rich guy on the...

Help, my movie posters keep wrinkling inside the frame.

Dry mounting will probably ruin the "collectibilty" of any poster that you dry mount which is why I mentioned that it is a permanent process in my previous post. Then again, I would think that the wrinkles in your posters would hurt their value as well. I doubt that you can salvage your existing...

    alternatives to Onkyo 595? Denon1802 ? Integra5.2?

Jand R is authorized for Onkyo. Do a search about the audio drop out issue. My understanding is that it is a problem with the DVD itself, not the receiver. Anyway, even most unauthorized dealers allow returns of some sort. I've seen them as low as 7 days, but many at 30 days. In my searches, I...

Help, my movie posters keep wrinkling inside the frame.

You could take it to a framing or photography shop and they can dry mount the poster to the foam board. This is a process where they use a heated press to melt an adhesive paper between photos and the foam board. This will take out the wrinkles on the posters. It is a permanent process. You...

Hire a HT Design Consultant vs. DIY HT Design - Which Way To Go?

I am also in the position of getting ready to start construction of my home theater and debating whether I should hire a professional designer or go forth myself. I ran into a similiar situation twice before when we added an addition to our old home and when we had our new home landscaped. Both...

    Starting my Home Theater

Based on your 20x20 room size, I'd get a solid yet relatively inexpensive receiver...Denon 1802 or the Onkyo 595 would be good choices. I'd put my money into the speakers and subwoofer. You can always get an inexpensive DVD and upgrade later. I'd buy a solid sub that you won't have to upgrade...

    Building permits??

My advice...find out your local codes design your theater to meet the code and get the permit. It isn't worth risking the safety of you and your family or the possibility of having your homeowners insurance reject a major claim. It isn't worth the possibility that the city finds out and makes...

    Starting my Home Theater

Post more specifics about what you are trying to put together. What size is your room? Do you listen to music mostly or home theater? Onkyo 595 venting

I've never seen any specs on this. I doubt that you will have any problem with the space that you specified. I would set it up and just see how warm it gets. Check it after different play time periods. If it starts getting too hot, either move it or put a clip-on fan by it to help move the air...

Purchasing an Onkyo 989 from a non authorized reseller...

Bryan, Call jandr.com. They are an authorized Onkyo dealer and they will usually price match other dealers...even if the other dealer is a non-authorized dealer. So, you can get the price and the warranty. Good Luck Mark

    AR HC6 vs JBL NSP-1 + WM40

Doug, JandR is out of the NSP1 package. But, the NSP1 package is just two sets of the N24's and the N-center which they do have in stock to sell seperately. I got mine in the mail yesterday, and they price matched it for $299 including shipping. Even without the price matching, the seperates...

    TV Risers?

The great thing about setting up your home theater is that you can make customize it to you. In my opinion, there is no "standard height" to answer your question. Make it fit your family and room. For example, if the kids usually sit in the back row, the TV will have to be higher for them to see...

denon avr1802 damaged, i have two options

If the difference is only $50-$75, most people will go with an authorized dealer. But on the 1802, the difference is closer to $150-$175. Also, even if he did get it from an authorized dealer, they would most likely want the original packing. He hasn't had Denon or etronics refuse service yet...

    Recommendations for $2000 complete system

I might go with other speakers that some feel are comprable or even better than the Energy 5.2. The Energy 5.2 are well liked, but you may want to consider the JBL-NSP1 system(about $300 dlvd) and the Sony SAWM40 sub (about $150 dlvd). These will more than rock a small theater, especially with...

    HVAC installation questions.

I would use the non-adjustable vents. The ones that just let the air in and don't have the louvers that you can open or close. They seem to get loose and rattle. By avoiding movable parts, you eliminate the chance for rattles. If you want to be able to close a non-adjustable vent, they make...

Any way to Close off openings in room? (rug?)

That's strange. What is the logic behind not allowing doors? Is it a safety issue of some sort? You may be able to hang some carpets on a board that would hang from a closet door type runner so it could be moved back and forth. I would think that you would need several for it to make any real...

Felix, I would call Denon's technical support (as etronics suggests) and tell them the problem you are having. They will be able to go through the things you should double check to make sure that your receiver is broken and that you aren't overlooking something...something you may not even...

    AC Outlet/Hardwiring Question(s)

This is usually an easy job, but the difficulty will be based on you specific home. If there is an easy way to run the wires, and there is an available hot line to tap into nearby, then it should be easy. Your profile doesn't say what area you are in, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding...
