    wall sconces

I put up 4 pair of sconces purchased from Ikea and they are fantastic. they are made of a translucent glass/ceramic-type material and are art deco in style. Ikea was a last ditch effort and we saved approx. $70 per light over the other possibility. I think we paid $12 or so per. here's a link...

    game room - dart board

I used hardboard, covered it in cork tiles from the local lowes, and then covered that in felt that matched my pool table. the table is crimson red and my local table supplier happened to have a piece he had just removed from a demo so i got an amazing deal on it. odds are, if cost is an issue...

Tracing a stage radius: Alternate methods?

for a large radius, i used a piece of wood lattice (8 ft for the size i needed, equaling a 16' diameter cirle), drilled variously spaced holes through it for a pencil point, and then used a nail on the other end for a pivot point. tony

    Carpet Tiles

on a similar topic, Lowe's sells a line of rolled carpet (Kanga), that is self-install with double-sided tape. .91 a sq. ft. and well worth it, albeit it is a cheaper low-pile carpet. i was able to avoid any seams due to my room being less than 12' wide and it came in at a total of $300. tony

    DVD rack question...

if you're handy, and want to avoid a cheap look, how about adding dvd slots to an existing cabinet, drawers, or any other furniture that could be modified for them? you can buy dvd holder strips (6' lengths) from rockler.com and mount them horizontally or vertically. if you're more handy, you...

    Sound proof door?

don, the cans of spray foam a consumer would have access to would be significantly more expensive than stuffing it with fiberglass insulation, if cost were to be a consideration. that stuff is different from what your builder is using. you'll be glad you went with the upgraded foam, btw...

    Sound proof door?

resurrecting this post, i'll tell you what i'm going to give a try as we originally wanted to just use heavy curtains to seperate a 70" wide opening i left at the bottom of the stairs to the laundry area (our theater takes half the basement, other half is utility/laundry. problem is the hvac is...

Color suggestions for dedicated HT walls. What colors did others use?

carl, i haven't taken pictures yet as i haven't finished the ceiling (going to use fabric), and to try to get the lighting right for good pics will take a bit 'o work, given the deep colors. our lightening is very minimal and impossible to get bright without bringing in work lights. for grins...

Color suggestions for dedicated HT walls. What colors did others use?

as an fyi, especially for you red paint users (4+ coats is typical), homedepot's behr paint can be mixed to any of the ralph lauren colors. saves you quite a bit of money. i never knew this, but i asked my hd paint guy for a red ralph lauren and he in turn asked if i want that in rl or behr...

Project "Turn that s*** down!" completed...

Wayne, when Eric said break his neighbor's china, i think he meant "break his neighbor, China.". as for Eric's write-up, it was hard to take it seriously. i kept thinking it reminded me of the classic Sport's Illustrated April Fools joke of Sid Finch, the 168 mph flame-throwing pitcher...

A little boy, a big TV, and glass cleaner

i would have followed these steps: 1.) throw all the disassembled parts into the back of your "2+ kids, obligatory mini-van". 2.) drive it back to the store. 3.) tell a sales clerk that your tv is clearly defective. 4.) demand an apology. 5.) take new tv home. anyone who's...

    The HT is finally up!!!

looks like somebody's been to Ikea... in finishing our room, with only the ceiling to go, we have a half dozen deco-style sconces that we looked for in every lighting shop within a 60 mile radius. nothing did it, and finally found the perfect lights at Ikea. we went from spending $100 per to...

    Silver DVD player rant.....

as i had stated in the opener, all of my other equip is black, which is why it matters. to further it, my newly finished room (pics coming soon) features a built in equip rack, which, on the back of it, is a closet that i framed out in the laundry room. the room side features the components...

Value of completed HT (when selling turn key)?

if it were me, and i plan on being in this situation in the next couple of years, i have thought about pricing the house a bit higher and then negotiate from there. if the price comes down too much, the equipment may come out. i would position it more as a "Home Theater equipment stays!", and if...

    DIY DVD rack designs

i'm not building a rack as such, but am building a couple of drawers with dvd holders. the reason i mention this is that Rockler (rockler .com) sells dvd holder strips in 6' lengths. they can be used in either a vertical or horizontal application. tony

    Silver DVD player rant.....

In attempting to upgrade my DVD player, I've become amazed at now having to throw "Color" into my criteria list. My newly built HT features the equipment rack as a central design feature, as art, and all componentry is black. God forbid some Flavor of the Month design guru deems "Metallic...

    Tools & Project

i don't believe home depot or lowes will cut mdf for you, for dust/health reasons. they do sell 2'x4' and 2'x2' pieces of 3/4" mdf. the cost comes out to be approx 1 dollar more expensive, per piece, than a complete 4'x8' sheet. basically, 4 bucks more, total. it's a heck of a lot easier to...

    Basement floor...what to do?

having recently finished the floor of my new basement theater, i can tell you that HomeDepot has a nice looking product, which i didn't end up going with. it's a 2'x2', toungue and groove osb underlayment with nylon "nipples" on the bottom. it keeps the flooring 3/8" or so off the concrete and...

    Need HT web page help

Jens - In general... ASP = Active Server Pages, a Microsoft-invented scripting language that runs server-side (not when the page loads into your browser, but when you call the page at the server). It's essentially html with typically VBScript or Javascript. The files, end in .asp JSP =...
