    Refurb Denon Avr-3803

The 3803 that I got from 6th Avenue is most definitely NOT a refurbished unit. I cannot say anything positive about their retail storefronts, but their prices are very hard to beat.

    Refurb Denon Avr-3803

Chuck- Thanks for the advice- I haven't really delved too much into the receiver, just set the time delay and some other parameters, haven't gotten an SPL meter to equalize channel volumes just yet. Mode memories? What are they? I've gotten as far as assigning inputs, that's about it...

    Refurb Denon Avr-3803

I guess I was really lucky, then- I got the $648 deal about a week ago, rec'd the 3803 on 12/22. Works great, but not really any different from my old Denon 3300 except for the new modes and a much better remote.

    Anybody own B&W

The bright-sounding comment that was posted a little while back probably has to do w/ the fact that the B&W speakers I've listened to are extremely revealing- use inexpensive or simply low-quality amplification w/ these speakers and you'll hear it. I've no experience w/ the 300 series stuff...

    Best $200 upgrade

Rather than any of that stuff, I'd spend the money for an ISF-certified tech to come and calibrate your display. Properly calibrated displays can be significantly better than what you started with. Taka

    B&W ASW600 and other subs

I was catching up on some of the threads and I get the impression that people don't like B&W subs here. I recently auditioned the ASW600 and the ASW2500- the 2500 was nothing to write home about, but I was impressed by the 600- very tight bass, very clean, no bloated sound. Has anyone...

    Anybody own B&W

I strongly disagree w/ Larry's characterization of B&Ws. I own a pair of Matrix 803SII and even powered by my modest Rotel integrated amp, they are wonderful. The amp makes the speakers rather bright and a bit of sibilance is there, but the imaging and soundstage is there. I need proper...

    XBOX: Game suggestions needed

Thanks guys- I'll look into Munch's Odyssee. If I can, I'll see if I can go over to a friend's and rent it, see if I think it's good before buying it for Dad. Taka

Dynaudio *melt* - what are your thoughts?

Saurav- You're right- in rock concerts, you're not going to hear any imaging. My writing is not clear enough- what I meant was I'm looking for sound reproduction that gives me the feeling that I am in a small club with the band playing on the stage in front of me at not-so-excessive volume...

    XBOX: Game suggestions needed

Hi all- I need some help w/ an XMas present- my Dad wants an XBox! Now he says that he is not interested in getting any sports games, so I guess he wants something else. He really likes strategy and puzzle games- any suggestions? I've looked around and see very little of that genre on any...

Dynaudio *melt* - what are your thoughts?

Saurav, Thanks for the reply. Not that I like to hear "every last inflection" in a performance, but I've never heard imaging as well as w/ the B&Ws- well, except for the Wilson Audio WATT/Puppy Vs that I listened to (but their sweet spot is about 12" wide and they're fatiguing to listen to...

Dynaudio *melt* - what are your thoughts?

I haven't shopped for speakers in quite some time now, so this is all very enlightening. Dynaudio making a line of speakers that is in the sub-$1500 range? Wow. I'll have to track some of these down to see how they sound. I was impressed by the Dynaudio 3.3 (IIRC), but they were very...

Wait - you like or dislike the Sonys?

Let me chime in along with Rick- I also have the Hitachi 32UDX10S and it is quite nice. My budget did not allow for an XBR (I would have gotten one if I could, believe me), as I was originally considering a JVC 32D503, a much cheaper television. When I upped my budget to consider an FS series...

Speaker shoppig tomorrow. Pls help add to list. And "bookshelf vs. floorstanding"

Aaron, At last something I can speak knowledgeably about! :) I don't think bookshelf speakers with stands really should be an issue with kids/pets- if you use a good quality stand (I have Target stands in my living room), fill it with kitty litter/lead shot/sand/whatever and anchor the...

    Budget Progressive Player?

Rob, Thanks for the quick reply- do you have a link for this shootout? I'll search the web to see what I can find. The JVC- are you saying it beats the RP-56 or the -91 or both? What about the Sony 700? Thanks. P.S. To follow up- I found an article on the web titled something like...

    Budget Progressive Player?

Hi all- My Home Theater is slowly coming along, so I thought I'd get some input on something that I've been looking at casually for a while now. How do the current crop of progressive scan DVD players in the sub $1000 range perform? I've read reviews on the Sony NS-700P, the Panasonic...

    Yamaha RX-V800/5280 question

Marshall, Bill- It wasn't until this year that I was aware of this issue, primarily because my TV was an old Sony w/ only composite inputs. To my knowledge, the only receivers that "convert" the inputs so that a single monitor output is used are the Kenwood Sovereign line. This was mentioned...

    Hitachi 32UDX-10S

Rick, What I meant by broadcast TV were my two TV sources- DirecTV via a cheap Hughes receiver as well as rabbit ears antenna for signal. I think I may revert to composite cables for my TV viewing, because I've read stuff about S connections being worse if the comb filter is poor in the source...

    SDTV/EDTV - 480p capability but not a HDTV suggestions?

Well, If you don't mind not having a flat screen, the Hitachi UDX-10S has 480p/1080i capability. Looks awesome when playing anamorphic DVDs, comes in a 32 and 36" size. I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but that's what I purchased- $1199 before tax and delivery. Circuit City...

    Hitachi 32UDX-10S

Rick, Thanks again- let me know if you figure out the ins/outs of the service mode and if you get a service manual. Do you notice much of an improvement on broadcast TV? I've noticed what appears to be digital artifacts on my DirecTV connnection as well as with the regular "rabbit ears"...

    Hitachi 32UDX-10S

Rick, If you get your hands on a service manual, please let me know- I'd like to tweak this set to the best possible picture. I may go ahead and plunk down the $175 for ISF calibration that is offered by my dealer. However, I'll probably get a better DVD player before I do that- currently...

    Hitachi 32UDX-10S

Rick, I don't have any calibration discs, so I'll have to go find one and buy it. However, I can't see any overscan that you speak of, at least by visual inspection only. I have noticed that my letterbox looks slightly bowed at the ends, though- I'm not certain if that's an optical illusion or...

    Hitachi 32UDX-10S

I'll be picking up one of these sets in a few days and just wanted to see if anyone else already has one and has any suggested tweaks/tips to get it properly setup. I'll be picking up one of the calibration discs as well as some more cables. It looks like a really sweet setup- 1080i capable...

Big dilemma- my living room isn't very big, so I'll be sitting no more than 5 ft. from the screen, maybe 6 ft. I have set a max budget of $800 or thereabouts to replace my old 20" TV and am seriously considering the following sets: JVC AV32D502- $599 shipped JVC AV27F802- also about $599...

    $12,000 budget, please help

With that kind of budget, do not overlook the B&W Nautilus line- Nautilus 805s are $2k/pr., I think you can set up a nice 5.1 system for $7k incl. sub. If that's too steep, get Nautilus 805s across the front and use the cheaper series for the surrounds. I'm a huge B&W fan, but the Nautilus...

Is it worth upgrading to monster cable?

One thing about the Home Depot/ Lowe's cable- the jacket material sucks. I've used this stuff when I had to, primarily for cost reasons, and I hate it. The jacket is really low quality, stiff and hard to strip. The Esoteric and Monster wire I've used has a much better jacket. That's the only...

    Cheap speaker recommendations needed!

About those JBLs..... how do they sound? Can anyone describe their tonal characteristics or compare them to other lines of speakers? I can't stand really bright speakers- Klipsch (at least the older ones) are horrible in that regard, as are a lot of the Celestion line. IMHO, the Denon I have is...

Hi- first post! I've finally gotten around to building up a home theater system and could use some help with the speakers. Right now, I'm running old Boston bookshelf speakers off of a Denon AVR-3300, nothing else, strictly two-channel. I would like to get at least new mains and a center and...
