PSB Image 10S surround owners? How do you like it?

I have been using 10S as my surround speakers for the last two years. My room is 12x40 in the basement and it is the surround speakers in a 7.1 setup. Fronts are AR-1s and center is AR-2C. Rear speakers are AR-edge. I am very happy with the 10S. It never sounded out of place. I have two rows of...

RPTV longevity: Please share your experiences.

My 1995(November) model Sony 41" RPTV stopped working just after the 3 year warranty. It required a $450 repair. It has been working until last month. Now the blue gun seems to be out of convergence(or something like that). I have not decided whether to fix it or not. I bought the KP61HS30(I...

Connecting TV's power cord to Receiver?

Not a good idea. When you power on the TV it will take more than the average. In general the the max power intake of the appliance you connect should be less than the rated output. Those outlets in the back of receivers are generally for other audio devices such as CD or DVD players.

No one Buying Onkyo Receivers Anymore?

You cannot gauge the quality of a company by the number of posts on a bulletin board. There are many reasons, both good and bad, for particular product/company to be talked about. There was quite a bit of coverage on Onkyo x9x series because of two movies in particular. Those were not entirely...

big problem - TV Is shutting off automatically

Try running the dishnet receiver output via the VCR input. My guess is that it will cure that. This may have something to do with the voltage level of the signal that the dishnet receiver sends. I had(still have) similar problems with bell-expressvu receivers. To give you an example, I have a...

Nuance N50 Sub and Nuance 1S Bookshelf

I say stay out of Nuance as well. Speakers and any other hometheater related stuff is not essential items but luxury items(need vs want). That is why they do not undergo the same scrutiny as others. It is up to the individual to decide what to buy. That is how these companies have been in...

Have a Pioneer VSX-D709s ... new receiver or get an amp and use it as preamp?

Given the choice is between the receivers you mentioned and an amp, you are better off with the purchase of a power amp both for now and for the future. The pioneer has decent decoding capabilities and the other receivers are in the same league. The amp would give you better sound now and you...

    Anthem AVM20 pre/pro or Rotel 1095 amp?

Since you have the Outlaw processor, you should consider the purchase of Rotel amp. Good amp is good for a long time. You may wait and see what happens with all the formats. Outlaw has all the latest as of now.

What's the difference between Anthem MCA and MCA Series II?

Capacitance. Up from 20000 mf/channel to 30000. Also, taller chasis so that there is better cooling. It is now expected to put out power closer to the spec. Of course, they never rated it 200wpc all channels driven. I f you see the literature it was 170wpc all channels driven. I say that it is a...

    Marantz DP870 question

Actually, you can use it with a remote but it is not qutite that easy. If you can get hold of a marantz RC 2000 remote for a while you can teach the commands and then use it. The switch has to be in the internal position. This processor was made to go with either SR870 or SR96THX. That is why...

5.1/7.1 Ch inputs as Main In's

It will work but is not ideal because Onkyo does not have the pre out-main in couplers. 7.1 channel input goes through the volume control and does not go throgh straigt to the amp. As an example, if you had HK AVR8000 you could access the amp directly(of course, if you had that you would not...

    Canadian Outlaws

A question to my Canadian friends(Sean or Serge): My 950 is in transit and scheduled for delivery on Wednesday. I got the details on charges and UPS told me that they have assessed $91 in duty. How can it be different in Alberta than in Ontario? The total is $266.14. I mentioned that...

    Processor Shootout...Anthem AVM-20 vs. Outlaw 950

Nice and sweet review, Evan and thank you very much for that. You made a lot of outlaw owners and prospective owners very happy(including me--I am waiting for mine). It is natural to have that "what if" scenario and it is not easy for a lot of people to do this. You did a great service...

Toe-ing in speakers? Do you or don't you? Why or Why not?

I use the the AR-1 powered towers for the front and I do toe them in. I did not go too deep into the science behind it. It just felt more right!

Justify high prices on some pre/pros

One point that is missing from the above discussion is the dealer profit which could be as high as 30-40%. That, in addition to higher labor costs brings the price of a hypothetical 950 equivalent from a high end company to about $2000. If you hand build it that is another 500? If you put...

    Onkyo TX-DS898 and JVC RX-DP10VBK

For the price the Onkyo 898 is an excellent receiver. It is 7 channels, supports most of the formats and THX EX certified. JVC has never been known for high quality receivers until the latest versions. We don't read much about JVC receivers around here.

    Receiver + Amp

4802, being a THX ultra receiver, is quite powerful. A three channel amp to the front will do fine for that receiver. It is quite capable of driving the four surround speakers.

    Preamp/Pro vs Av Receiver, differences?

1050 is a receiver which means it has amplification built in. 950 is a prepro and it only suplies line level(about 1v) signal and you need 7 channels of amplification to run the speakers. 950 has all the latest format supports, more digital inputs etc. compared to 1050, in addtion to being a...

    Upgrade dilema - Please help...

I would go with the denon. Then, if it is really necessary, a two or three channel amp may be added. Do not play the waiting game especially on the Anthem. Motorola was supposed to be ready with the code a long time ago. Buy now and enjoy.

So, are we sure that the HK8000 does logic 7 in dd, dts modes ?

I called the toll-free number in Canada(for Canada) and talked to tech person who said it does apply logic7 on to 5.1 sources. He said the lower one(520) does not but the 8000 has the processing power. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about. That combined with the earlier thread...

Canadians - Bell ExpressVu: HD or only SD?

You do get 286. As the tech said it takes time to get all the channels( I don't know why it should). You get a few hours of HD programming a day in 286. Yesterday I watched the PBS special "shape of life". Fantastic picture and I love nature programs. Well worth the investment. If you...

Pioneer Elite VSX-49TX and 2 Subs?

Quite a few people use two subs. The other category of people that use dual subs are the ones using powered towers. The powered towers like the deftech and ARs etc. have several options. You could just run a speaker wire to them and configure them as full size speakers or run high level and...

    Marantz Receivers

From all I heard and read, the x200 series from Marantz upto 7200 is better avoided for the time being. Apparently, 8200 is manufactured in a different manufacturing plant and the quality is good. Both 8200 and 9200 got some good user reports(not too many). However, they seeme to be a bit on...
