Agree with Carlo.
As for DTS, indeed, Anchor Bay or other studios remaster inferior or less "praised" movies with dts or dolby ex or whatever and these two REALLY seem to be the same releases with just a new packaging, that in one case is frankly ( personal opionion ) ridicule.
The dvd market...
Well, thanks for the link. It seems the first tentative look of the director's cut edition has been changed, to the better I would say ( personal opinion ).
Still a bit weird, that "old, used" look though. There are some nice posters of the film ( aside from the classic one) that could have...
Opinions are like xxxxxxxx , we all have one. But there's a big difference between "imposing" an opinion or judging people's opinion in a "I have the truth, you don't" way and just giving a personal opinion (pro or con).
Ron gave his opinion and it's his own and I respect that. But Robert did...
argh, 3 against one, I surrender!
chill out guys.
nope, no intention to buy this lousy release. got a good store where I can check online reviews truth before buying, when doubt is rising.
ok, better fly away before I get shot down here.
but again, chill out.
I canceled my order, having both LIVE editions, which I bought cheap and are good enough ( not perfect of course ).
I can see this dvd market turning more and more into "fake" remasters or rerererereleases, especially as we enter recession times. buyers beware
Eric
if you have the laserdisc, keep it. a ld can look awesome with a nice processor or HTPC (ATI Radeon or GForce 2 GTS) and a well calibrated CRT.
very happy to have both (ld and dts dvd)
I don't like when directors modify theatrical versions of films with which the majority where very...
Ron
??? there are tons of great flicks which happen to also be demo material. Here, they even could not do the CGI properly. And there are many flicks who are not good but at least manage to be REAL great demo material.
I really don't get it but this is just me and free country.
And I repeat...
Aside from their voluntary absence of support of dts ( the previous 5 titles were a joke, with tricks ), is the fact that while they OWN New Line (!!!), they failed to master the art of encoding, compressing as New Line was always able to. Until recently I should say however as their recent...
Hi
I also was disappointed by the new Mann's cut. I have this dts dvd but kept my AC3 laserdisc, which I prefer for the theatrical cut it is. especially the last powerful mountin climb-final confrontation part.
That's the whole issue with modified for video cuts: I think people should be...
hi Frank
it's another proof that the market is made of poor and great dvds and very easy to please consumers and others much more "picky"..... or not so picky in fact
many lds still look better than some dvds ( and sound MUCH better ) when processed through quality scalers-processors and...
Robert
The only thing that can save this movie is the new super cool cover art. But better try to buy the poster than the dvd maybe
I'm a big fan of Renny Harlin and I was hoping a lot for this movie. Major disappointment.
I praise Ron's reviews a lot but even a great soundtrack and video...
frankly, DAYS OF THUNDER, how "topgunist" it can be is still way better, and so is SUPERSPEEDWAY.
had really high hopes for DRIVEN but they even couldn't do the CGI and stunts right. incredible.
I'll pass on it.
duh!
it STILL doesn't change a thing
though I can understand the $80 tag might be..... disuasive
it still looks and sound MUCH better.... hey, it's also an Universal release so when a studio wants to do something right, it can...
Matthew: because Universal is now rerelasing it (check on dvdfile for the review ) and still, they can't get it right. And because the laserdisc, as Philip rightfuly reminds us, as I did, is stunning. http://www.dvdfile.com/software/review/dvd-video_4/tremors.html
too bad so few on this forum...
not anamorphic ( the region 2 are ), no 5.1 remaster and while the laserdisc ( beautiful!! old Universal vs new Universal ?......) was a PCM non discrete, the track was beautiful, musical, powerful. Here we get a sloppy dolbysurround 2.0.
well, next ?
Antonio: well, looks like you're the perfect typical customer for majors then : no complain, always satisfied etc etc
Sorry, but crap is crap and I'm a buyer of dvd, so I want the best that can be done.
I did not invest thousands of dollars in my system to feed it trash ( note : thousands...
some reviews point to some lack of bass or unexpected lack of that real "oomph" typical with these movies.
any comment on that ?
thanks for the honnest reviews, as always.
David
I'm not sure which version I prefer, between the dts dvd and the latest laserdisc edition, ie, as far as the director's cut and theatrical version (ld) are concerned. I kinda liked the song during the climbing and the confrontation, which is not present on the dvd.
will keep both for sure.
Scott: LOL !
Quint: I don't want to open this can of worms but I hear you :)
The theatrical soundtrack sounded great, very nice elements there ( compared to JPIII, which sound disappointed ).
