Incorrect. A fourier analysis on a square wave will reveal zero DC component. A square wave consists of a set of sinusoids. A perfect square wave contains an infinite number, requires infinite bandwidth and hence doesn't actually exist. A finite rise and fall time is therefore required. A...
For a sin wave with an amplitude of 1V (ie 2V p-to-p), the RMS voltage is 0.707V. For an 8R load, this represents an average power transfer (ignoring output impedance etc) of 0.5/8 = 62.5mW. For a perfect square wave with an amplitde of 1V, the RMS voltage is 1V. This represents an average...
There are a few corrections that I think need to be made about exactly what occurs when an amplifier clips. Yes, the wave is "squared off" when the amplifier clips, the cone does not just sit in one spot such as was suggested. A square wave consists of (very) higher order harmonics. That...
No, DH is not what you want. Take a look at the specs for a lot of cost-no-object SS amps. Most have almost zero headroom. Stiff power supply. There is some info on this in the AA archives. Search for posts from Trevor Wilson.
If you are only listening to music, you only want two speakers.
I advise against some of the above recommendation where people are recommending $250 speakers with $700+ subwoofers. Spend more on your mains, thats where the music is...a sub is for deep bass. You can always add a sub later on...
No, it will not change the impedance. Biwiring is electrically identical. All you are doing is moving the point at which the signal is "split" from the back of the speaker to the back of the amp. You *may* change the RLC characteristics...but no more than changing cables would.
Im pretty sure nobody has answered the actual question :)
Towers will cancel out at high (all) frequencies in different positions from each speaker. However, at higher frequencies, due to the small wavelengths, they are in phase again at high intervals , ie very close together(depending on...
nOrh Synthetic Marble 7.0's World-class drivers, most inert cabinet you can get and a top notch crossover. I have marble 7.0's with the Scanspeak 9500 tweeter, the current 7.0's use the 9700 at $180 each, which is even more transparent...at the expense of a smaller sweetspot due to the...
Amp technology hasnt really changed in decades. Sure it get better, but VERY slowly. The amps in the 5700 were good amps. They still are, and will be for a while to come. I would take the 5700 over the 4802 in terms of sound quality. Like NickSp said, take the top off and look at the...
When you D-A convert a digital signal you get "images" of the original signal at higher frequencies. These need to be removed with a lowpass filter. Upsampling puts them higher up, meaning a lower-order filter can be used. I think people claiming >20kHz are dreaming..even if they could...
I would worry less about the specs, and more about how it sounds. Oversampling happens in all DAC's, not just 192kHz DACs. 192kHz DACS are capable of decoding a signal sampled at 192kHz. The problem is...there is no software that actually does this. In other words..its a marketing gimmick...
IMO... Music -> refinement. Everyone knows what a piano sounds like. HT -> Dynamics. Few know what an explosion sounds like, so they just want it to sound good. With no "reference" to compare it to, "good" is easier to achieve.
IMO, the Nautilus 804 is a "high end" speaker.
IMO the 100 is VERY good "midfi" speaker.
Both are very good for the money (although I have other preferences at their repsective budgets), but the 804 is more expensive...and hence, in this case, a better speaker.
FWIW, I own neither, and...
I have never done direct comparisons between these specific amps, but I have done comparisons between MF, Rotel and Parasound. I have not heard Anthem...
From my experiences, I have found that in just about every case I prefered MF over Rotel and Parasound. Its a warmer, richer sound. I liked...
I actually meant to say I havent heard anything except nOrh. Amazing how two letters can flip the entire meaning of sentence :)
I have a problem with that everyone says they are the best they have heard etc etc...yet they are often someone's first "real" speakers, or a step up from some old...
Didnt know they ever were the performance/price kings.
Looks are subjective. Ie some love the nOrh look, others hate it.
They are very popular at AVS forum, and less popular here. They almost never get mentioned on just about every other forum...although I am sure there is a few that I am...
He's full of it.
An amp is a voltage source. It provides a voltage over a load, which according to ohms law, dictates current.
"The SIG 2.1 amplifier puts out 100 watts per each of the 5 channels @ 100 amps of current and the AVR7000 puts out 100 watts per channel @ 75 amps of current. There...
nOrh, AV Reality, Krell (10-30x the price of the other two brands) use the XT tweeter.
Everyone seems to be of the opinion that for the $, it is exceptional.
I have never heard it...just read a lot about it.
I own Krix Lyrix (not gold, which I have yet to hear).
These comments are based on the $AU1200-1300 price. In the US, I heard they are about twice the price.
Basically, for what they cost in Australia, IMO they are pretty much unbeatable for the money. Probably the only hifi component I own...
Douglas Self is a die-hard objectivist.
I dont have a problem with that. Being an EE student, I too am of the opinion that everything can be measured.
However, having said that, I have heard MANY amps with stunning specs (krell and bryston are examples) which IMO sound pretty average...
No doubt it can get close..the best ones can *almost* double. But they can never double it.
I think its best to make the distinction clear as many people are misinformed on the matter and some may even use it as a final decision choice.
