FS: SVS 16-46 PCi + extras

I'm looking to sell my 16-46 PCi due to my moving into a location that probably wouldn't like it. Packaged with it is a Behringer Feedback Destroyer + needed hookup cables. I also have the product manuals and the box for the BFD (but not the SVS). I'm asking $600 for the total package, but will...

    Submit your Golden Raspberry nominations

Al, I think they mean Bad Boys II was a sucess compared to most other summer movies. It seems this year breaking $100 million is a feat for the few. Nearly all the major releases fell short of it: Full Throttle, Tomb Raider, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, etc...

    R.I.P. for Disney 2-D Animation?

I don't think Disney is realizing the core of the problem with it's animation division: bad writing. Treasure Planet was an entertaining movie in it's own right, but the awkward mismatch of genre's made the story damn near incomprehensible. Pixar is a winner because it's films have a magic and...

    Submit your Golden Raspberry nominations

Since this has become the year of the bad movie, I thought it would be fun to hold an amateur version of the Raspberry awards, the industry's leading support group for mediocrity. Anybody who has an idea can feel free to submit a nomination. Anything's eligible, from acting to writing to...

Bad Movies - Industry upset your telling friends

Paramount executives blamed the poor sales of the latest Tomb Raider game for sinking the movie. I was laughing so hard...... It's like the classic exchange between a mother and her chocolate-covered kid: "Timmy, did you eat the cookies?" "I didn't do it, it was Susie!"

DTS and DD DVD Movie Releases

The Haunting was a pretty notable dual release. I believe the DTS version followed the Dolby by over a year. When it was finally released, it completely plowed the Dolby version away, to the point where my local Best Buy only has the DTS prints. It's usually the other way around.

Need advice for cheap subsonic filter

Chu, To answer your question, nearly every action movie released in the last 4 years has material at 15 Hz and under. Also, the tuning point of my sub is 16 Hz, so I'd just like to cut out everthing below it, to avoid bottoming the driver with some of the extremely deep bass in some movies.

Need advice for cheap subsonic filter

I'm looking to stick a subsonic filter on my SVS to get rid of all the stuff that overloads my woofer. I'm looking for it to cut off in and around 15 Hz, maybe a little lower. I don't need a full EQ or amp, so does anybody know where I could get a relatively inexpensive stand alone subsonic...

Right off the bat: the first problem with "Gigli"

I smell a future drinking game sprouting up around this nightmare. While Affleck was never that good to begin with (aside from Chasing Amy), J.Lo used to be a respected actress. Apparently that actress no longer exists. Sad that she's so willing to flush her reputation away on these stupid 'pop...

Sub out (LFE) and normal 2ch Stereo Output

Derek, if I read your post right, you're askking if, in two channel mode, a signal will be sent to your sub? If you have the size of the speakers set to 'small' then yes. The crossovers that strip low bass from the main channels in movie soundtracks work the same way with 2 channel music.

Can someone tell me how to identify the "corrected" DTS version of Jurassic Park?

Dave, On my disc, the D2R2 label is on the 'silver ring' as you called it, except it was on the label side, not the data. Of course, listening to it *is* always a good way to find out :D . BTW, I just remembered. If you stick the disc in a DVD-ROM drive and check the modification dates on any...

Can someone tell me how to identify the "corrected" DTS version of Jurassic Park?

I just realized I may have not been very clear on what I meant by saying the DD was 'correct'. It was bad grammar on my part. I meant to say that Dan's opinion that the DD disc had fairly low bass was correct, as many other listeners shared the same feeling. I honestly have no idea which version...

Can someone tell me how to identify the "corrected" DTS version of Jurassic Park?

Dan, You're noticing another big controversy from a few years back: which version of JP is more 'accurate' to the theatrical track. While the original DTS disc was very anemic, bass wise, the DD wasn't all that much better. When the repressed DTS came out, DTS listeners were ecstatic, but DD...

Can someone tell me how to identify the "corrected" DTS version of Jurassic Park?

Dan, it's pretty much up to you whether to send it back in or just keep checking around for the repressing. It is out there, but may take a little digging to find. If you're happy with the sound of your current DVD though, it may not matter. The original DTS disc did have a low LFE, but it...

Can someone tell me how to identify the "corrected" DTS version of Jurassic Park?

Hmm, guess I spoke too soon on the likelyhood of recieving a remastered version simply on the fact that this happened so long ago. I went out about two weeks after the remastered disc was released, and I had no problem finding it. BTW, I have never seen a JP disc with a red grid, and aside from...

Can someone tell me how to identify the "corrected" DTS version of Jurassic Park?

Dan, If you bought a JP DTS disc today, it would be very likely that you'd get the remastered version, in fact about 99% likely. This whole issue happened nearly two years ago, and even stores that had dozens of copies of the old version would be out of it by now. But as always, check the inner...

Is Pixar trying to sell more SVSs? ;)

Just look at the name of the sound designer for all the Pixar films: Gary Rydstrom. This guy has a reputation as the reigning Hollywood bass king. he's the guy behind the first two Jurassic Park movies, Terminator 2, Atlantis, Saving Private Ryan, and Minority Report. All of these movies have...

    Lowest Bass Track?? ToyStory2??

Toy Story 2 is a reference bass disc, but it is hugely overshadowed by one of Gary Rydstrom's other sound designs: The Haunting (funny nobody mentioned it). Bass down to 10 Hz (and usually lower), including at least two instances where high intensity subsonic tones rip through the room (very...

FS: Pioneer CLD-990 laser disc player w/discs

Simple sale. I have a CLD-990 (with remote and manual) that I'm looking to sell, along with the THX Star Wars Trilogy and the first and last Indiana Jones films. The player and discs are in very good condition, with the "Last Crusade" disc coming in a plastic slipcase. Going price is $150 for...

Talk about giving your sub a workout !!

Creating subsonic bass isn't at all difficult. All that's needed is a pink noise generator and a high pass filter that cuts all sound above a certian frequency. Set the filter at, say, 20 Hz, turn on the noise machine, and feel the vibrations. I have experience as a theatrical sound designer...

Director's need to look at previous actor's/actresses movie roles...

Jay Roach really should've looked much harder at Heather Graham's previous roles before making the terrible decision of casting her in Austin Powers: TSWSM.

Pulp Fiction CE: Wrong DVD inside

I bought Animal House: CE. The disc was printed with the AH label and everything looked fine. When I put it in my player the main menu for The Firm came up. Turns out the first layer of the DVD was misprinted, and the second layer contained the distorted and pixellated second half of AH. Best...

    Signs (2002)

Sorry guys, I have to throw a wrench in the proceedings. I found TSS to be boring and dull, aside from Haley Joel Osment's wonderful performance. Regarding "Signs". If the trailers accurately reflect the movie, it just seems like another 'slimy things jump out at you and scream really friggin...

dvds to show off ht system

SPR DTS JP DTS. The T-Rex approach and attack. The Phantom Menace. Everybody already knows where, so I'm not going to bother mentioning it. The Haunting DTS (opening credits or the infamous 'door banging' scene. Gotta love that 20 Hz sine wave) Jurassic Park III DTS spino Vs. T-Rex...

    3Hz!

The human ear can detect bass well under 20 Hz, given that the volume is high enough. I've been able to detect a 15 Hz sine wave firing out of my SVS. It caused a lot of pressure in my ears (akin to descending under water), but it was beautiful. Extremely low bass can also add that little bit of...

    A Sad Story About Accoustics..........

Wayne, you're completely accurate. There are indeed large spikes around 70 Hz and 50 Hz, and every room I've used the SVS in has the same characteristic bump. The fact that the test tone on the Avia disc is mainly centered in those accentuated regions doesn't help. I could turn it up, but then...

    A Sad Story About Accoustics..........

I found a different corner that helped the bass a lot. It's still not as impressive as it used to be, but it's the best I can do with the circumstances. Placing the sub in your seat and walking around the room really helps. I found out that the original position of my sub was the worst place in...

    A Sad Story About Accoustics..........

Jeff, I have fond memories of what my 16-46 can do, and I know that it's a good little cannon. I'm not blaming the sub, rather the absolutely hosed accoustics of this room. Like I said, it gives me a headache when I put my face over the top grille :D. It's just depressing that it sounds so...
