    How to break into separates.....

FWIW, Here was my upgrade path to separates from a Yamaha DSP-A1 (not a bad amp section at all, as many have attested, and so do I). And the DSP-A1 was not bad at all in terms of processing, less the DSP funky stuff which I never listened to) First step was to buy (and in my mind/ears the...

    Extension cords with AV gear?

Fair enough. It is so "non cumbersome" to get the materials, spend a few buck, and assemble a quality PC with appropriate materials to get where you want to be with quality AC delivery. UL is a good thing, no doubt, but with DIY, one is working with all ( or mostly, depending upon source )...

    Extension cords with AV gear?

It's all in the connections Wayne.................molded or quality IEC and AC plug ? Which one would you pick if a few buck separated an extension cord or a well constructed DIY type cord ? And don't say it doesn't matter :#O BOK

    Extension cords with AV gear?

It is just one more degrading connection you should avoid, IMO. And other than a Home Depot type 12AWG extension cord ( which you could use it as a speaker cable, as it is said these days ;*), there is no such thing as a "high quality" extension cord. It's just either a wrong room setup with no...

Has anyone ever cut open a "Better Cables" or other boutique cable..

Kurt, Points well stated. One cannot always tell with a cursory look at bare cable -- can get one in a tizzy about possibly being ripped off. One always hates to be taken as the fool. I have purchased from BJC (Component set) and appreciate your forthrightness on the website. Clearly...

Has anyone ever cut open a "Better Cables" or other boutique cable..

I took apart a couple of Signal Cable power cords in order to use the good IEC and AC plugs they use for a DIY project (inserted CV Audio wire in said project). FYI, Signal is considered a good low budget alternative to pricier wire offerings. I found .90 cent (probably less if spool bought)...

Please help me decide on a pre/pro - anthem, EAD, etc.

I'm partial to EAD (owning an Ovation+) and you will be hard pressed to find a better 2-channel pre/pro that excels at HT too. Problem lies in finding a used one in good shape and well cared for by someone. If you find a used O+, then it could run you between 1600-2000. Just a stellar unit...

    a cautionary tale

Perhaps you were "listening" to your new TV..... focused on the image and oblivious to the sound...... Sounds great with crystal clear imaging with "deeper bass black levels" type of phenomenon. The objective subjectivists conundrum. I would beware of the WAF here... a delighted wife could...

Looking for seperate prepro that does 2 channel well ,~$1500 new or used.

EAD Ovation+ . Best of the lot listed above. 2-channel is superb. Used could be found for $1500-1800. The Ovation+, or Signature, is one of the best pre/pros for musicality you can have the pleasure of listening to. BOK

    Acoustic Panels and Speakers

Like Chris says, boxing the speakers, as in an enclosure, is certainly not what the speaker designer had in mind. It will most likely skew you HF dispersion in a bad way and offer way to much absorption for the mids and HF which you need for the depth/soundstage within your listening space...

    Belden, Cardas, Eichmann...the DIY dilemma.

OK, I get the drift now ;*) I actually owned the 550i's years ago, so I have some benchmark. Granted my gear is all different now, but I remember the 550i's as not being too bad at all. A "wee" bit overpriced, but not shabby and the fellow I sold them to was tickled to pick them up for my...

    Belden, Cardas, Eichmann...the DIY dilemma.

If you want to forego DIY, then buy the Monster which you seems to be talking yourself into based upon your closing comments. Eichmann is mostly what I use. I do not DIY them because you need to know what you are doing here. I leave it to the pros in the case of Eichmann (Bolder & Chris...

What kind of separates do you have?

no, John just has been around long enough to hear.... possibly upgrade,...... with either a no cost/pain factored, or just found what he likes. Is there a difference, John ? I use EAD Ovation+ and Classe 150 (x2) and 2 IRD MB-100 (Le Amps) for rears. A long way from where I...

A Friend's resturant wants music and asking me for help...

Bill Will is correct. The copyright laws require that any retail establishment "for profit" must pay the license fees to the artists for material played in said establishment. It could be a boombox with bloated bass in a backroom. It is a VERY strong union and they have never lost a court case...

    Acoustic Panels and Speakers

I wouldn't think the panels would be a problem placed right up adjacent to your speakers. My side wall panels are within a foot of my speakers and they image just fine and dandy. Just how far "off to the side" you have them is dependent upon your room layout and the thickness of the panels ...

Main thing to NOT forget is ... ASCAP and BMI. You don't pay the fees they come with lawyers. You can't play music in this type of environment without paying the players. As far as what gear.... just depends on budget. Others will surely offer recommendations. I'm just telling you how to...

Keeping the dust out of my HK7200

I've used three small Holmes Hepa Air Filter in my basement HT since I moved my gear down there. I place them strategically near my gear and run them constantly. I unplug them and remove them every time I fire up the system. Takes a minute or two to remove them (and a bit of a pain) but really...

Monster Cable vs. Blue Jean Cable?????

Vin, Thick and something going on inside does not always equate to quality. Many a fine gal could agree, I'm sure. The girth of Monster you speak of is filler and nothing more. 16 varieties is a marketing department out of control, that simple. Upgrade the next day if not satisfied ;*) she...

Monster Cable vs. Blue Jean Cable?????

Blue Jeans, hands down. I own their Video and it is quite nice...... **** And I bought Monster early on over 10 years ago..... and the Monster wire is very long gone. And Heartland now offers the Belden 89259 with Eichman Bullet plugs. A lot of these smaller companies have their act...

    Elegance?

Heard they were coming. Lotsa $ for Mr. Lee to expend to an OEM.... and for what gain? Monster has too much baggage to buy their way out of the position they have charged into over the years. Overpriced mediocrity, regardless of looks. Good Luck to them on this venture. Don't see it flying...

what do you think of this?

Brian, I owned the Monitor 7 for a couple years, or so, and as far as the LCR 350's they somewhat predated the 7's. But when I was shopping back then, the esteemed Corey Greenberg of the long since defunct Audio Magazine( or the old Stereo Review, perhaps), rated the 350's as one of the best...

what do you think of this?

I would run over there and take a detailed and anal examination of the condition of these speakers. If they are set up, then listen for awhile. Remove the gills and inspect, again very closely. Give them the whole 9 yards in terms of cosmetics , etc.... If not set up, make him a deal that you...

    Yamaha DSP-A1: repair or replace

Julian, I owned a DSP-A1 for 5 years and sold it off late last year. Just a great piece. I never had a problem, but these things do happen. I have read over the years that the display is prone to be the first thing to get funky. That is easily replacable and not an uncommon failure. Can't...
