You reeeeally owe it to yourself to experiment. Of all the home theaters I've listened to, the ones with dipole side speakers sounded the best to me. I think it's because I don't like bullets, doorslams, footsteps, etc. coming at me from the sides...totally distracts from what's going on on the...
In the comparisons, don't forget that the ported SVS enclosures have a bit of an advantage over the sealed/smaller Velodyne. Tom laid out the comparisons pretty darned well, IMHO.
I've got old pairs of the L100s and L69s. Gotta tell, they are some damned excellent speakers. For the last 15 years or so, I've been using the 4412's as multi-use monitors for my synthesiszer AND for casual music and tv listening. Aside from their bulky shape, they are absolutely phenomenal...
2 things: 1) Tony Genovese was correct in what he said...go re-read it. A phantom center and a real center DO sound different..there's a slight bit of hollowness(a psychoacoustic artifact) to a phantom center image, but whether that's annoying is your call. Regular stereo with a phantom...
Last time I read about this, I fell off my pet dinosaur. This was all the "hype" five years ago. For many technical reasons, I don't think it'll ever make it for audiophile sound. For store advertising, automobiles and announcements, it'll be cool, but for home audio, I doubt it will make the...
Bri, I guess you don't need to ask the chicks whether I'm a commitmentphobe or not. Jack, Although I'm more of a fan of sealed enclosures, I'd be curious to know about the passive rads as well. And of course, if you come across any better ideas for a 14" cube, I'm all ears. In the end...
Yep, in comparison to the Rythmik, waaay too pricey for THIS budget. Now if they knocked $200 off of it...then I'd consider it. BTW, it's a bummer that the servo kit locks you into their driver and that box size. Otherwise, it does look interesting. So far, it looks like the Rythmik amp + AV12...
Jack, Thanks for the link to 52100 Digital amp. Do you have any idea of what the cost is, and do you think it would be a better idea than the Stryke 380 watter? Randy
Brian, My buddies and I are trying to be environMENTALLY conscious by reducing the amount of formaldehyde fumes(MDF) introduced into the environment as a result of the MDF manufacturing process. And if you pull my finger, it plays Jingle Bells.
"Other plate amps just hardwire an LFE(unfiltered) input specifically for this reason." Ya mean amps that don't have any crossover built in, right? I don't think the Rythmik or Stryke amps have 24 db/octave rolloffs...maybe 18db at best.
Well, if I could find twice the power in a plate amp that could fit inside a 14" cube, I might consider it. One thing I'm a little surprised at is the lack of a "crossover defeat" switch. Most of today's processors have built-in xovers and it shouldn't be necessary to cascade filters such as...
Jack, Thanks for the head's up....I appreciate it. Maybe Brian will send me some response numbers so that I can see if it'll give me the output I'm looking for in my 3000 cu.ft. room. Now don't give me that funny look...I'm not looking for anything outrageous at 20 hz.(it's a condo), just...
Hello....Mr. Frugalskate here, Thanks for the suggestion, Jack. As I've stated before, my priorities are 14" sealed cube, plate amp, and some useable clean output at 20 hz. Between the Brahma and the AV-12, I'll have to ask Brian to run the numbers...which he already may have done. I'll...
I'd also be darned curious to hear how they compare to the Mackies...I assume the 624's, right? They'd be closest in size, but the 824's are by far, the more ubiquitous. Randy
It totally depends upon the volume you generally listen at. From these boards, you sometimes get the impression that you absolutely need the largest and most powerful. The reality of the situation is that the vast overwhelming majority of subwoofer users never make full use of the power they...
I'd have to agree that it'd be a hard comparison. If I were doing a 2-channel setup, I'd go Sapphire + sub in a heartbeat over a pair of the 750s. I've had the pleasure to hear both and really liked them, but the Rockets are really geared more toward HT, which I guess is what you're looking for...
Adam, Yeah, I'm familiar with the risers but an skeptical of the sound improvement hype. I mean, if ya need the riser to bring the tweeter up to ear level, that's great, but otherwise, unless you point/tilt the tweeter downwards, your ears will be off axis. Maybe for rears, you could use them...
Adam, I fully concur with your spacial perceptions as to what would be proper for a full 750 setup. Yeah, the tweets are different for the dipoles, but as anal as we sometimes get, I think they'd be just fine...especially since Mark(Chief Rocketeer) voiced the dipoles to match up to the 750...
Hi Adam, I've been following the Rocket thread for more than a year now and thoroughly understand your predicament. My buddy received his 750's yesterday and can also afford to do the complete 750 setup, but I suggested to him otherwise. Don't forget that alot of this boils down to one's own...
Tom, I feel sorry that you're so often relegated to splitting such fine fine hairs. At least YOUR knife is sharp enough to appease those who demand it/care. And for the folks who DO demand it, you SHOULD purchase the SVS merely as a simple *thanks* for all the darned time Ron & Tom spend...
Talk about splitting hairs!!!! As Tom seemed to semi-gloss over, most psychoacousticians agree that it takes about a 10 decibel difference in spl levels to be perceived as "twice" as loud...yeah, somewhat frequency dependent. Reality is that you're only talking a precious few decibels...
Brian, Speakers in faux marble??? Never thought about that. Sounds like a great idea! My suggestions for sub $1k speakers: GR AV-1s or AV-1+(customizable) ACI Emerald Von Schweikert VR-1s all shielded, all 12" height max.
In alpabetical order; ACI(Audio Concepts International) Hsu Rockets SVS Velodyne Considering everything that's coming down the pike with each of these manufacturers, I'm betting that combined, they're gonna suck up over 80% of online sales. For sealed choices, you've got ACI, upcoming...
Here's your synopsis: PIE in the SKY. The idea of "hypersonic" sound was hatched and developed by Elwood Norris at least 5 years ago and promised this, that, and the other thing. It's really more suited to advertising displays than high quality listening. Last time I looked, many issues...
