Most of my sight-unseen buys have worked out pretty well. However, West Side Story was the silliest pile of garbage I've ever seen. I didn't know whether to laugh (because of the terrible script, music, and story) or cry (because I wasted my money). I can't believe that it won best picture --...
Hendrik and Aurel -- Thanks for your help! Since I don't have a region-free player (ok, ... I probably should get one), I'm especially looking for Region 1 or Region 0 (not encoded) DVDs. Also, I'm very interested in films in which Hungarian is the original spoken language - rather than just...
Ok, I finally received a watchable DVD of this film from Amazon.com. There's still some pixelation in a few parts, but I'm able to watch the movie all the way through now (except for the fact that you see the same scene pop up every few minutes - then it goes back to the movie).
Just some...
FYI - The replacement disc is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday (1-7-03). I'll let you know if it works, ... and if so, I'll post a review! If any of you foreign film lovers out there have seen this one, let me know how you liked it. Hungarian films are hard to come by!
Being a lover of foreign films and also a Hungarian-American, I was very excited to see this film being released on DVD. It received pretty good reviews from several sources, so I was quick to order it. :star:
Unfortunately, it wouldn't play in three different DVD players (from three...
Gary -
Although I've never seen the DVD, I can definitely vouch for the film. In my opinion, this is the best football movie ever! The cover art is a bit of a spoiler, but it's still one that you'll watch again and again if you've ever played (or just plain love) the game.
A keeper...
Malcolm - That last one was a good one! My wife was reading over my shoulder and just busted out laughing.
As an aside, ... I bet that woman would be really steamed if she learned how excited I've gotten every time Best Buy replaced a VHS aisle with a DVD aisle over the last five years.
;)...
Just thought I'd pass this one along, ...
Yesterday, I was picking out DVDs for Christmas gifts at my local Best Buy when an angry woman was dragging her husband past me. She had a very angry look on her face and said to him (and I quote):
I just finished watching Lagaan (Hindi - 2001), ... and WOW!!! If that's not the best Hindi film ever, I really want to know what is (so I can run out and buy it). Lagaan may be the best "team" movie of all time -- in the same vein as films like, Remember the Titans, but much better. Lagaan is a...
Wow, ... I sure got the business on that!
Personally, I love movies, I love DVDs, and I own hundreds (not the thousands that many of you own). However, I'm also a "dyed in the wool" capitalist at heart. I believe in rewarding companies who deliver a quality product -- be it automobiles or...
Okay, ... I have officially had it with cheap, flimsy "paper case" DVD packaging. Call it "slimline," call it whatever you like -- fact is, ...
I'm mad, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!
My Grease case already ripped! That is absolutely unacceptable. I don't care what title is...
Ken -- No, I haven't. The reviews looked good, though.
Yesterday, I came to an important realization while searching for Polish-language films. If you want to find great foreign films, you need to search the Internet for language-specific suppliers. Most are very reputable and generally have...
I finally found detailed reviews (at dvdreview.com) -- although parts of these two films take place in Hungary, they are both spoken in German. Apparently, foreignfilms.com had them listed incorrectly as Hungarian (OSL). I guess there are no films in Hungarian (at least I haven't found any)...
Has anyone seen Memphisto (Winner - 1982 Best Foreign Language Film) or Colonel Redl (Nominated for 1985 Best Foreign Language Film)?
If you have, ... can you answer a question? I've researched these films on the Internet and can't tell if the original spoken language is Hungarian or German...
I wasn't planning on buying E.T., due to the hacking, ... er, ... revisions. Now that both versions are included on the regular edition, I may indeed buy it!
Thanks Spielberg! :emoji_thumbsup: :emoji_thumbsup:
Slipcases = Garbage
I bought Grease. The packaging is junk. The studios should be ashamed. What did they save, ... $0.10?? Raise the price by twenty cents and I'll gladly pay for decent packaging.
Actually, DreamWorks SKG also bought the rights to My Sassy Girl -- Madonna's Maverick Films is producing the remake and it will be distributed by DreamWorks.
I wrote an e-mail to DreamWorks, asking them if they will be releasing the Korean film in Region 1. Personally, I fail to see how...
James Nguyen --
I followed your link to My Sassy Girl and read the full review. You've gone and done it now, ... I'm officially on a mission to see this film! I probably won't get it on VCD, but I'm very tempted now to look at region-free DVD players.
I'm also going to check around the net...

My Sassy Girl (YupkiJuhGin KeuNyuh) looks like a fun film. My wife and I love romantic comedies - and the storyline and characters appear interesting. However, DVDAsian.com only seems to have the Region 3 version available. Since I don't have a region-free DVD player, I might...
Here are the foreign films that I now own, in order of original spoken language:
Chinese-Cantonese - Chungking Express (1994) - The second of the two stories is my favorite, ... a nice, wacky romantic comedy.
Chinese-Mandarin - Yi-Yi (1999) - A nice epic family story. I liked Beijing Bicycle...
I have Central Station (Portuguese) and Antonia's Line (Dutch) on order from Amazon.com. Both seem to have received accolades in every review I've read (the latter being the 1996 Best Foreign Language Film). Based on the Internet reviews, they appear to be the best examples from those languages...
The packaging for Panic Room stinks (I saw it today at Best Buy on an end-cap display). It looks a lot to me like a studio trying to increase profits by providing an inferior physical product. I won't be buying this DVD unless I see a normal Amaray case.
Ken Stuart --
I received another e-mail from cdstore.com.pk. They originally carried the 2-disc version of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, but do not carry it anymore because "no one is willing to pay a few extra bucks for the double DVD set." They did confirm that the single-disc DEI version that...
James Nguyen --
When I was at Best Buy today, I was going to pick up Shiri. When I read the specs on the back of the DVD, it read, English 5.1; Korean, French. This totally threw me! I just wanted to verify -- is the OSL for Shiri English or Korean? Based on the specs, it almost sounds like it...
Ken Stuart --
I sent an E-mail to the supplier this evening to see which version of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam they carry (DEI 2-disc or Video Sound single-disc). I'll let you know how they reply. In any case, thanks for the "heads-up." A consumer really has to be knowledgeable and vigilant these...
Aaaaarrrrgh!!!! That's definitely false advertising if that's true!!! Here's the image, which clearly and forcefully (via animation) is advertising the two-disc DEI special edition:

I'll let you know what I receive when it comes in the mail. I'm hoping the "Video Sound" text was...
