    Can't decide: Denon 2802 vs 3802

Mike, I recently purchased a 2802 after going thru the same dilemma. I'm running Studio 60s up front, a Shiva based sonosub, and matched lower end Yamahas the rest of the way around(with a 32 Wega). In a 18x20x8 room I regularly listen at -15db to -10db below VE calibrated reference with no...

    Need recommendations for $700 receiver

Eben, Sorry I've been out of town. I got it at a place called Rand's Camera and HiFi in NJ. If you go to the Denon site it and put in 732 for an area code it will come up. BTW I've had a few people aske me this via email so I'm guessing it's the best price out there for a authorized dealer...

    Paradigm Ref Studio v.2 shielded?

Thanks guys. I definitely want the shielding and it looks like the guy was just misinformed. I'd love to have them 6-8' apart but my current room setup won't allow it. Right now I have some bookshelf speakers on stands but they are shielded and I don't have any problems with them...

    Paradigm Ref Studio v.2 shielded?

Someone told me that the version 2 Ref Studio series speakers were already shielded(specifically the 60s). Is this true, I thought shielding was extra and had to be ordered? I'm looking at putting them around 8 inches from a 32 Wega, do I even need shielding? Thanks. ------------------ -scott

    Need recommendations for $700 receiver

I got a quote from an authorized dealer for a Denon 2802 (not in stock yet) for $649. It has DTS ES discrete and Pro-Logic 2. It has most of the features of the 3802, less 20watts(90) and 32 bit converters(24). ------------------ -scott [Edited last by Scott M on August 13, 2001 at 03:58 PM]

Best Price on the Denon 3801?

Try these, they are a little cheaper although I don't know anything about any of them. I was watching Eddies too but I was reluctant to order from them(I know too much about the old stores). http://www.pricescan.com/electronics...item506407.asp ------------------ -scott

    Sonotube, where to get?

I'm glad I could help. I forgot about Vienna because they didn't have the 18" that I was looking for at the time. I put the whole 12' section on top of my Jetta with no problems . ------------------ -scott

    Sonotube, where to get?

That is true. I would say that I personally have found that Sonotube is very high quality, i.e. very round where as some of the clones are more oval shape, making it diffcult to fit caps in. And the stuff that Home Depot sells(Quicktube?)is about 1/8" thick where as Sonotube is 1/4". Of...

    Sonotube, where to get?

I just remembered it's Sheetz Wholesale in Sterling, VA. I'll have to see if I still have the number but if not you can get it from the Yellow pages or information. They have all kinds of sizes, I saw everything from 12" to 36" all in 12ft lengths. Man I must be getting old it took me a few...

    Sonotube, where to get?

I got my 18" tube from a place in Sterling. I don't have the number here and I can't remember the name(it's early) but I'll dig it up when I get home and post it. I don't know where Kingstowne is but Sterling is near Dulles. Your best bet is to call Sonoco(the manufacturer) and they can give...

Dean, Mine looks exactly like yours! It's dark gray on the top and bottom and has shorter legs but other than that it's virtually identical and I have that same wood rack only it holds mostly VHS right now(my DVDs are on the good shelves...wow that's weird! ------------------ -scott

Impedence of Shiva in parallel(4ohms - Help)?

I am currently running my new sonosub(shiva)with 2 monoblocks. Each VC is getting 125W each from 2 Soundstream THX cert monoblocks. When I try to run in parallel with just 1 block the first one seems to run fine but the other is going into standby. I'm assuming some type of short protection...

Another "My sonosub is finished" post

I'd like to thank everyone that participates in the DIY section because I think I learned more by just lurking then anything else. I just finished it and I'm amazed at the performace. I have a relatively low end system so this thing really shines in my setup. Of course now it's time to...

    Suggestions for DIY speaker stands?

Pat, My rear speakers are on 36" high plaster pillars. They have about an 8" x 8" stem with a 12" x 12" base and are hollow so I guess they could be filled. They had lost of different sizes. Just a suggestion. I got them at a craft store but I can't remember the name just now, $20...

Flare both ends of a port for Sonosub?

Thanks guys. I'm going to have 2-4" ports so I guess I'll need 4 flares. I'm also assuming you would add 1" to each port. I'm getting the ports from partsexpress(do you think these are decent quality?) but I didn't like their selection of terminal cups. I want two sets of posts because my...

    Soundstream monoblock for sono-sub

I have the chance to buy a pair of Soundstream mono-blocks rated at 120w/8ohm-200W/4ohm for $400 and I was wondering if this would be a good choice to power a shiva based sono-sub. I'd be looking to wire the VCs in parallel and put 1 block to it for 200W into 4ohms. Does anyone here know if...

    Tuning freq/room mode question

I have an existing(read crappy) 10" ported Cerwin-Vega sub that I believe is tuned rather high. I want to experiment with changing the tuning freq of this sub before I begin building my sonosub. Will lengthening the port always result in a lower tuning freq? I ran a frequency sweep the other...

Tight fit on endcap..how close can components be?

I'm curious why you are both using 2 ports instead of 1. I'm considering a sub of similar proprotions: shiva based ~5.0 ft^3 a single 4" port ~14" long tuned near 18hz 18 dia tube What are the advantages/disadvantages of 2 ports over 1. Also please post your results when you are...

    Impedence spike - LspCad

Thanks guys. Right now I don't have any plans for a passive cross-over but I keep that in mind for the future. Dan, It's always great to hear it from the horses mouth, BTW LspCad is a great tool for beginners. ------------------ -scott

    Impedence spike - LspCad

I've been tooling around with LspCad for a Sonosub and I think I've arrived at a setup I like but there is a large impedence spike, over 70ohms, at about 36hz. I'm not sure I have all the inputs correct so I thought I'd if this is normal behavior. This is my first DIY in speakers. It's...

Shiva Subwoofer-please help, something just not right.

ok, a few follow up questions. So any large signal below your tuning frequency is potentially dangerous at higher volumes because the driver can't maintain control and pulls higher current from the amp? Is this due to lack of damping from the enclosure becuase the larger wavelength? So that's...

Shiva Subwoofer-please help, something just not right.

I'm curious as to why you guys think 18Hz is a better tuning point for HT as opposed to 23Hz and if this holds true for any given enclosure size and driver? I'm an HT newbie planning on building a sonosub in the near future(based on the shiva) and I'm in the process of gathering as much info...
