problem is, on my receiver, when it senses a 5.1 audio signal from a digital connection i cannot "bump it down" to prologic without switching to an analog source.
if this was coming in as 2.0 it would be less of a problem but they were sending it out as a 5.1 signal.
it's a moot point now...
plus, Universal HD tends to show their movies in OAR if it's 2.35:1 and in DD 5.1
this is great since our comcast system might be one of the ones dropping UHD the very next day when the olympics are over.
from imdb about suspiria : It is often incorrectly assumed that, to achieve the rich color palette, the film was shot using the outdated 3-strip Technicolor process. This is untrue: no film after the mid-1950s was shot using this method. The film was instead shot on normal Eastman Color Kodak...
there's definitely some annoying crackling/harshness in some of the dialogue from several actors (not just Sandler) that sounds like it could be fixed.
24 is probably my favorite show of all time but so far the only season that I have had the desire to go back and watch was season 1. it's not that the other seasons aren't great, they just don't really lend themselves to repeat viewings IMO.... season 5 is really great so far, btw.
i'll still probbaly try and track down the region 2 version of this season if i can. but i appreciate the info, guess i was wrong about my 16:9 theory.
travis - i'd agree with you 100% if it were not for the "previously on the Shield" segment of that widescreen episide which shows almost 5 minutes of footage from throughout the season, in 16:9 - perfectly framed. i've watched all 4 seasons now on dvd and it wasn't until starting season 4...
and as i've said before, many many scenes in season 4 look cropped at 4:3 and the widescreen presentation of the same shots look framed perfectly. i think they might have changed their shooting approach for season 4.
I agree with you guys about seasons 1-3 but not season 4. There were too many times things looked cut off, and the "previous scenes" in the 16:9 presentation looked perfectly framed.
guys i just found this thread through a search (after posting another thread, sorry)- i agree that seasons 1-3 were intended to be 4:3, but i'm just past the "widescreen" episode on the season 4 dvd's right now, and i really believe that this whole season was framed for 16:9. many times...
i finally got around to watching THE SHIELD season 4 on dvd, and tonight I came across something very strange on disc 3. the entire 3rd episode on the disc (the exnteded episode), and the "Previously on the Shield" segment on that segment were presented in 16:9. And they looked great. i got...
i doubt they added edge enhancement to the film for "different looks". i know they manipulated the look of this film but the dvd has additional problems i doubt will show up on an HD transfer. when the Minority Report dvd came out there was the same debate, but when the HD transfer of that...
i enjoyed the film a lot more than i expected (the only other Bay i can remotely stomach is ARMAGEDDON, and that's just as a guilty pleasure). but this disc looked REALLY poor in my opinion. Edge enhancement, compression artifacts, and highly inconsistent image quality overall. Not at all...
INHD occasionally shows FULL METAL JACKET in HD @ 1.85:1 - looks fantastic framed that way.
THE SHINING also looks good when the remastered dvd is zoomed to 16:9, but occasionally there are some shots that looks a little crowded that way.
good point, but during this film there doesn't seem to be many cgi-effect shots that were rendered at 2.35:1 so even with heavy action / effects scenes the open matte sharpness seems to stay intact and never looks zoomed... i know exactly what you mean though, it's what ruined the Matrix...
i have to agree about the HBO-HD version - it is actually a lot sharper than the DVHS/DTheater hd-tape, plus you get more info on the top and bottom since it's open matte (not OAR, but at least you're not missing anything). the framing looked shockingly natural at 1.85:1
judging by the post-production/color-correction documentary in the extras, i think that last scene was one of the most heavily manipulated when they digitally changed the color timing of the film for this release. maybe that could explain the added haloes? i agree that it's distracting...
regardless of the transfer debate, there is no excuse for that opening shot being so badly cropped. that is just plain weird, serves no purpose, and even DISSOLVES into a properly framed shot....odd. in fairness to those defending the transfer - it seems to me that the transfer gets easier to...
NO ONE denies that the screenshots look better than the old dvd. For some reason the actual DVD in motion, though, reveals problems that were never in the original DVD (excessive filtering and some aliasing). So it's the "pick your poison" route - excessive filtering or artifacts. on...
to DaveMack and David Crowther - earlier in the thread i posted the same exact thing about hearing missing sound effects so now the count is up to three, not just you two. I haven't gone back to watch it again to timecode the most obvious examples yet, but there are numerous parts throughout...
patrick - you're the only other person who has mentioned the zoom-in of the first shot. i think it's incredibly obvious but no review has mentioned it yet. what could have been the reason for zooming it in? i can't think of any....
one other thing....is this supposed to have discreet rear-center channel info (6.1?)... my receiver isn't picking up the ex flag and is reading it as a normal 5.1 track....
watched this again last night and I am still extremely disappointed in the sound quality, but it has nothing to do with bass. i am more concerned with what seems to be a LARGE amount of virtually missing impact-sound effects in the center channel...there are many times when something is either...
Dave Mack - i am not sure we are hearing the same Batman Begins - that scene you mention in particular sounded incredible when i watched it and the dialogue was very clear. Much more so than ROTS. i think Batman Begins sounds like DTS when compared to ROTS... -sean
