Books that made you say: "This Should be a Movie"

I didn't think Still Life with Crows was due until July

Books that made you say: "This Should be a Movie"

YES! I am SO with you on Relic. As a matter of fact I was just about to mention Relic. After seeing the movie, all I could think was that there were some books I'd NEVER want to see as movies simply because I don't think they'd be done well. All you need to do is watch the first 15 minutes of...

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

Joshua, I guess what I was getting at was that while TMP did well at the BO, it wasn't a movie that had people buzzing about it. How about we go back and name some summer movies with legs. I keep forgetting alot of them, so maybe it's worth the time to do it. T2 Lion King Signs...

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

Chris, Don't forget that back in the VHS days, Lucas was the same Lucas he was today. By that I mean that I took FOREVER for him to buy into the home video idea and release Star Wars on tape.

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

I thought about TMP Joshua, but TMP didn't have the good word of mouth that Lion King did.

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

Well, Nemo may be the movie with the best chance of having legs (or fins). It made me remember when Lion King opened. That was huge. Maybe the last real summer movie with legs. It seemed to play for the whole summer, and there was a buzz in the general public about it for almost as long. Could...

Films that you fear may NEVER be released on DVD.

You know, I've started to think....never say never. I'd given up hope on Hopscotch, Yes Minister, Undercover Blues, Wind and Dragonslayer. Lo and behold, all but the last one are out, and I believe Dragonslayer is coming. Who would have guessed that Kimba the White Lion and Gigantor would be out...

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

Thanks for the compliment Scott. Is it me or does it seem that the surprise movies these days are more comedy than action. The comment about disposable blockbusters is right on. That AND the comment about DVD. I'd also add that there are SO many releases now, it's hard to go to a movie more than...

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

I was talking to someone in my state's film dept. (the division that tries to attract filming to the state) and he said that its all about the number of screens today. The ratio is like 5-1 in terms of the number of screens today to the number of screens in 1977. He suggested looking at the...

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

Win Joy, I was thinking more of the cultural phenomenon that was Star Wars. It was on every magazine cover through out the summer. It had a Christmas special. It was talked about everywhere. In 2003, it seems that we focus on a film alot before it opens. It's hyped by the studios on all the...

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

Responding to Win Joy about seeing another Star Wars....this is something else I was thinking about. It seems that the hype ends once the movie opens. It's all about the pre release hype now. Once the movie opens, it's suddenly old news...on to the next hype. Remember when Star Wars opened? It...

Can a Summer Movie Still Have Legs?

I was wondering this because of the large % drops we see now. With a new movie every week is there less incentive to see a movie more than once. Also, with DVD, knowing that you'll own (or rent) the DVD in a couple of months, does that eat into repeat viewings? Oh, and there's the hype machine...

So I was thinking about Star Wars on DVD...

When I first read the news about no OT on DVD, I was shocked that all I felt was....ambililence. I've always thought of myself as SW obsessed. I'd put the OT on some kind of throne since day one. What's happened? Maybe I've just watched it too much. I don't know. A month ago, I actually sold my...

    Movies that really strain credibility.

EWOKS!!!! A couple of trees smashing an armored assault vehicle. Sling shots beating blasters. UGH. Yeah, all of SW is a suspension of disbelief, but this was insulting.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Again I ask......Where is Anduril? The elves at Helm's Deep don't bother me, after all, Elrond sent his sons in the book with the Rangers. Rangers!? OMG where are they? I'm guessing no Rangers in ROTK. A shame. They show how awesome the power of Numenor really was, and also how far Gondor has...

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

This is a great discussion of the TTT. Like everyone else, I was struck by some of the changes. The Faramir one was the hardest for me. But Ihad forgotten how Aragorn turned down the ring in FOTR. That reminder made it work for me because it strengthened Aragorn's character. My major complaint...

    Need Help with Philips DVDR985

I can't quite figure out how I'm doing it. I'm not paying enough attention at the time to know exactly what buttons I'm hitting, or just when it goes awry. I've read the manual and it hasn't given me any insight into what might be happening. I'll keep trying though. For the time being, I'm...

    Need Help with Philips DVDR985

Hi all. I'm having trouble editing DVD+r discs. It's a wierd problem, but when I try to add a new index picture, or change the title names, I either hit the system key or the ok key on the remote (or I hit the < one too many times), and the info screen loses all the disc info. I can't access...

Discussion on Rons review of Philips DVD recorder

Update: Well, I recorded Star Wars using the composite cable as many here suggested. The picture looked horrible. I then switched to an AR SVHS cable (nothing specatular), and the picture was amazing. So, for me at least the composite is NOT the way to go. I'm using a Pioneeer cld-504 LD player.

Discussion on Rons review of Philips DVD recorder

Well, I picked this baby up too. I have the same 2 pixel progressive scan problem that everyone said was there. Has anyone heard anything from Phillips regarding a fix? It's not a big problem for me when I'm watching widescreen movies (My TV is 4:3), but I do notice it in full frame sources such...

Discussion on Rons review of Philips DVD recorder

Ron, I am very sorry to hear that. I was really looking forward to that. Hopefully, it isn't anything sinister, and that they'll be back once the infamous Progressive Scan problem is fixed. I'm getting one of these this week, and am hoping it delivers as promised. There are just too many LD...

I'm so sick of stupidity in Hollywood!

While reading the comments about the Wachowski brothers, all I could think about was Peter Jackson. Damn he's talented. Thank God this is the guy making Rings a reality. But he started out pretty small too.

Universal and Peter Jackson to remake....

They'd probably update it to make it present day, but what would be wrong with keeping it pre 1940? There's a real romanticism to that time period, and for me, it make it more of a fantasy, than seeing Kong stomping around present day NY.

Has the Phillips rep been here yet? I haven't found a transcript here yet. I'm interested in this machine too, and will probably use it only for recording, at least until there's a fix for the Progressive Scan output. BTW, one of the other forums indicates that some TV's arent' effected. I have...

Allo Allo Box Set is Coming in July

Yikes, you can offend anybody with anything. It isn't as thought this is the first comedy to poke fun at something very serious......Hogan's Heroes, The Producers, even Raiders of the Lost Ark made fun of the Nazis. There's some very good comedy about the old USSR, and that was just as serious...

Allo Allo Box Set is Coming in July

I noticed this a few weeks back, but the full specs were only recently announced. The classic Britcom Allo Allo is coming to R2 PAL on July 8. It's a box set containing the complete first 2 seasons. YES! I love this series. Does anyone know what the release schedule is for the future volumes...
