Possible Release of Disney's "Song of the South"?

Dick Cook, Chairman of the Walt Disney Studios spoke at this summer's Annual Convention of the NFFC, the club for Disney Enthusiasts. The Septeber/October 2004 issue of the FantasyLine Express (the club's newsletter) reported part of his talk:

HD Olympic Games Opening Ceremony/Ongoing Coverage: What's Going On???

I can understand that the scarcity of HD camera/editing equipment is limiting the number of events included in the HD coverage. I caught the opening day ceremonies on and off on Saturday, and thought that technically, the coverage was wonderful. The placement of commercial breaks was just plain...

Any newer model players with format correction/scaling?

Thanks for your thoughts guys; you've been a great help.

Any newer model players with format correction/scaling?

Does this mean that most widescreen TV's do NOT lock into "Full" mode when they receive a progressive scan signal? What would a non-anamorphically-enhanced widescreen film look like from the Mitsubishi DD-8040 into my TV (locks into Full mode...)? Letterboxed within pillar-boxes?

Any newer model players with format correction/scaling?

OK guys, please forgive me, but I want to be sure I understand what you are all saying. My (sadly departed) RP91 sent my TV a progressive signal, which caused the set to lock into the "Full" mode. I could go into the RP91's menu, and select most of same modes as were available from my TV (if...

Any newer model players with format correction/scaling?

Sean, It's nice to know that I'm not the only one with this problem. My RP91 died and apparently can't be fixed, so I'm looking for today's best version of the same thing. Thanks to you all for your suggestions.

What's a good Multi-disc DVD Player for $300 or less?

Meghan/Stephen, Thanks for your responses. I'll look into the Denon 4800, but I'm really interested in a single disc player. Do you know of any? It may be that I'll just have to turn off the progressive scan (or revert to my interlace player/laserdisc combo player) when I'm not playing an...

What's a good Multi-disc DVD Player for $300 or less?

Meghan: Does the DV-CP701 allow you to adjust the aspect ratio if your TV locks into "Full" mode when it gets a progressive scan image?

I was just at the internet movie database for the first time in a few weeks and noticed that Leonard Maltin's reviews were no longer available. Anyone know what happened?

Comcast to announce DC Metro HDTV...

Robert: Thanks for the response; I take it that the Motorola HD-220 somehow attaches to the RCA 100 to decode the cable's HDTV signal? Chris: I agree. Erik: Definitely... Now....if only we could get the Washington Post to carry programming info for Digital TV stations.

Comcast to announce DC Metro HDTV...

Does anyone know if the HDTV signal will be decodable by the already-out-there converter boxes? I have the RCA 100 (forgot its exact model, it was the first more-or-less reasonably priced one on the market last year) and would hope that I could continue to use it...and I'm already a...

Looney Toons on DVD...NOT! Please Sign Petition Link Here!

Sometime in the 1980's I had the great pleasure to attend a lecture given by Chuck Jones at the AFI's Kennedy Center theater. He alternated his talk with showings of (what were described to us as) archival prints of some half-dozen or so WB cartoons. Definitely a magical day. If a DVD can...

What was Warner's source material for Wizard of Oz?

I saw the 3-strip Technicolor print of Oz when it was in the theaters (the Uptown, in Washington, DC). The colors were eye-popping. There was the occasional 'halo' effect due to the fact that the individual separations had dried out in different ways, and the images no longer lined up...

    HDTV Olympics no sound?

Scott M, Look on the bright side... at least those bottom-rung announcers kept quiet during large portions of the Opening Ceremonies. From what I've read in the paper, Katie Couric and Bob Costas were blabbering alot. Scott P, I figured that NBC sold relatively few ads because of the...

    HDTV Olympics no sound?

JUST WATCHED THE OPENING CEREMONIES AND THEY WERE ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR!!!!!! (And I will also spend waaay too much time watching the HDTV coverage...) I did experience minor drop-outs of both sound and video (watching in the Washington, DC area), but those were few and far between. Sound was...

    rp56 vs. rp91

If your TV locks into "Full" mode when receiving a progressive scan image (as does mine) there is no choice: the only player that scales properly (ie, non anamorphic films will be displayed "unstretched") is the RP91. Got mine this week and will be setting it up tomorrow with great expectations.

HDTV in Washington, DC. I've got questions

I had a huge problem getting 27-1 starting last summer, even called the antenna installation guys back. It turned out that WETA had moved its digital transmission tower from somewhere in NW DC to somewhere off George Mason Highway......I needed to point my antenna in a totally different...

    IMAX Ultimate 3d: anyone own?

I just discovered this thread and am quite interested in this 3D system and would appreciate it if anyone with a copy could answer a few questions: Do the 3D glasses use the same liquid crystal system that the IMAX 3D theatrical system uses? What does the video synchronization controller...

    Metropolis, 1927

Dave, There are a number of web sites about this film; here is a typical one: Metropolis The film has always had a checkered reputation (H.G. Welles is quoted as calling it "quite the silliest film") and the involved story suffers by all of the cuts, but it remains a powerful example of...

    ***Gay-Friendly DVD's, Version 5***

I watched the first episode of "Queer as Folk" (the US version) last night. Excellent picture quality (I was not expecting widescreen, let alone anamorphically enhanced). Sound is only surround....... Haven't had a chance to explore the set in depth, but there are a lot of extras.

    Panasonic RP91 vs RP56

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to answer my question. I suspected that the RP56 couldn't do the scaling; looks like I'm getting the RP91. I think the reason that the RP91 does not use the Faroudja chip is that it was released before the chip was..... I doubt that Panasonic would...

    Panasonic RP91 vs RP56

I'm trying to decide between these two: the deciding factor may be whether the RP56 can rescale non-anamorphically enhanced letterboxed material for Widescreen displays that lock into "FULL" mode when fed a progressive scan signal. I know that the RP91 can do this but I can't find a definite...

Malcolm not quite the as funny IMHO

I think Malcolm is still well-written and very funny; perhaps we've all gotten used to it's consistently high quality that we're taking it for granted. As to other shows that hit a similar note, I like "Scrubs" and "The Tick."

For what it's worth... If you really like anime (I don't) get Akira. Else get Final Fantasy. I loved Final Fantasy (despite its narrative flaws) and was bored to distration by Akira. ------------------

My results on the Panasonic RP56 vrs. the Sony NS700p

I was definitely misinformed about the DTS passthrough for the Sony NS700p -- my source was the Crutchfield web site which has heretofore generally been very reliable. I just returned from Best Buy and happened to notice a stack of NS700p's on sale ($283, btw); the DTS logo was very...

My results on the Panasonic RP56 vrs. the Sony NS700p

Andrew, Thanks for your quick response. I'm a bit surprised about your comments concerning this player, since all the reviews I've read have been extremely positive (and none have mentioned anything about the image shifting.) Now my simple selection has become more complicated. Can you (or...

My results on the Panasonic RP56 vrs. the Sony NS700p

Andrew, How did you get a Philips Q50 to test??? I've been eagerly waiting for this model to hit the stores (cyber or bm) and, to the best of my knowledge, they are not yet on the market in the US. I've contacted Philips, and all that they could say was that it should be released sometime...
