Don't Blame studios for non oar

This is a question of economics and not of art. As DVD players find there way into more and more homes of people who think of them as placements for VCRs the market for fullscreen, or P&S, also grows. I can't tell you the number of times new DVD player owners have asked me how to remove the...

    Samsung 27" HDTV: upconverting?

The Samsung will display either depending on what you can deliver. Some TVs automatically up convert any signal to 1080i but the Samsung should display either 480p or 1080i, with an outboard HD decoder. Greg

small & cheap subwoofer vs. DefTech PowerMonitiors?

I have my big home theater system down stairs with the RPTV, big tower mains, and a big powered sub. Yes it was a battle with the famous wife acceptance level but she has come around and now enjoys benefits of better sound & picture. So much so that we just added a 27" Samsung HDTV and an A/V...

    JBL S312's

The JBL S312 are very good speakers but to be honest I like the N310 sound better. I have an older set of JBLs, THX181, which have the same lay out of elements and love the sound. The new "Northridge series" version fix some of thr dependablity issues with the THX models. These speakers...

Anyone purchase Marantz x200 in last 2 weeks?

I've had the SR-5200 since it was released in Sept. and I've read all the reports of problems. I also saw the test on the SR7200 in Sound & Vision. The thing is I still haven't had any of the problems and I truly have enjoyed the receivers performance. I'm using a Toshiba SD2109 DVD player...

    What Speakers Do You Own?

I'm always upgrading so I've got a mixed bag though all JBL brand. TLX181 Mains 3 way much like the N310 D38 Surrounds Like the S38 Flix 20 Center 2 way PSW110 Sub I'm happy at the moment but I just got a 6.1 receiver so I'm thinking of a rear center channel speaker. Greg

    Let The BOWL GAMES Begin!

The only bowl I cared about was last week and Alabama won! The new coach has started a turn around after last years rotten results. '02 should be a very good year for the Tide. Greg

Promising news for Marantz x200 owners

I've had the SR5200 since it was first introduced in Sept. and I haven't had any problems with it. I though I had a problem with the sub out but it turned out to be my fault, I had it pluged in to the in (right next to out) by mistake. I have the component video connected straight to my RPTV...

What ever happened to ~ *SANSUI*

Boy that brings back some memories, I had a Sansui receiver in the late '70s myself. It was a good dependable player during my miss spent youth and the many noisy parties. I guess times change and Sansui missed the boat on the digital revolution and went by the wayside, to bad. Greg

Open air or closed audio racks and why ?

I like the open type not only for ventilation but also because it's easier to deal with the wiring. Open racks are helpful if you have equipment of different sizes from various manufactures. Greg

What started you on this hobby?

I've been involved with hi-fi since I was a kid in the '60s when FM was something new. There was 8-tracks in the '70s and in '75 the big upgrade came along. It was a used Sony intigrated amp followed by a top load cassette deck. Before long it was joined by a Philips turntable and a pair of...

    Sound and Vision Magazine Credibility?

I've read S & V for many years even back when it was stereo review. It has always a helpful source of real world information on current hi fi equipment. I've found the magazine to be very helpful in making new technology understandable. As the owner of a 5200 Marantz receiver I'm bothered by...

    Center Channel Speaker help...

You may like the JBL S-center speaker. It's not a mini sub but it is a 3 way speaker with 2 woofers. Since the center channel is mostly for voice a powered sub would not really be helpful. Greg

    S&V tests the Marantz SR7200

I have to echo the "ouch" posted earlier. I have the SR5200 which only claims 85 watts so I'm afraid to see the true output numbers. To be honest I've been very happy with the receiver since I got it, I like the PL-II, the 5.1 surround, and many other features. As the artical says I have...

    subwoofer started farting

I'm having the same problem with my new Marantz receiver and my existing JBL subwoofer. The best I can find out is it's involving a DC charge built up in the sub. I now turn down the subs level before turning it on. It's a bit of a pain since everything else can be run with the remote. Greg
