Newb Bought Bower and Wilkins 703 S3 for Starting A Dolby Atmos Setup. Need advice

Honestly, if the B&Ws are in good working order, I would keep them. A matching center will be expensive, and could be something you work toward in the future. But for now, I'd try an ELAC UniFi center and see how it can match in. Yes, it's ideal to have matching speakers all around, but that...

    Stoopid 4K Blu-ray question

Agreed with Scott. Those two players really are your best bet. There isn't much to choose from, to be honest, and the Sony players are... funky. And yes, to get a full featured player, like the 820, it'll be about $400. The days of cheap players and media seem to be in the past. And I would...

    Cat5E cable

Yeah, I would use 12GA OFC (oxygen free copper) stranded speaker cable. There is copper clad aluminum that's a bit cheaper, but I'm a little skeptical of that. You don't need to spend a fortune. Look at something like Monoprice 12GA OFC.

Enjoyable movie, but a rather obscure choice for this treatment, it seems to me.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Nostalghia -- in 4k UHD

This is one I've never seen, and Tarkovsky is a bit of a struggle for me. The viewer really has to be in the right frame of mind, and well rested. I pre-ordered this a couple months ago, and supposedly it will be here on release day.

    Cat5E cable

FWIW, I did this math in my head, so it might be off, but it would take something like (48) 24 AWG wires to equal one 12 AWG. It might be only 40, but still.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I don't know about the colors. Others can comment on that. This version of the movie looks very bright and well lit. It has a completely different feel from what it's always been. Personally, I think that was a mistake. I'm just not fanatical enough about it to get very upset about it.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I vaguely recall this thread is about the 4K release of Aliens, so... I finally watched it a couple days ago. The opening sequence really jumps off the screen. Dynamic range of the torch cutting through the door kind of made my jaw drop. The movie is now very bright overall, visually. So...

    Newbie Seeking

I doubt that TV has a component input anyway. Unfortunately, the image is so tiny, it's impossible to see what's there. However, it does appear to have a plug for an A/V "dongle" that should work with yellow composite video output on the player. The dongle is something like THIS, and connects...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Actually, Kaleidescape is better than disc, with a cost to match. Also, I still think you're rather overstating the amount of data dedicated to 4K movies on disc. I understand even 80GB is beyond rare. It seems to tend more to a max of 40-50GB for a 2 hour movie. I have a UHD computer drive...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I was going to mention that myself, plus even though a 4 layer BR disc can hold up to 100GB, it's virtually unheard of for the feature itself to occupy 90GB. So that stat strikes me as motivated reasoning. For me, with my HT that is more audio capable than video (with a 65" QLED) and Gb...

Hardware Review Panasonic DP UB820 UHD Blu Ray Player Review

The answer is rather simple. It's a video media player. It doesn't read data discs. You need a computer drive for that.

I'd be inclined to give this one a purchase, but for the life of me, I can't decipher the code. I doubt it's possible for it to ever look spectacular. I believe it was a fairly budget affair.

Marantz AV 10 - Initial Impressions

So NOT surprised. Wait, do they mean that consumer products and professional medical devices are different in some significant way? Who could have known? I mean, except for anyone with an ounce of functioning grey matter.

Why does Denon require me to have ARC?

As Jeff mentioned, some receivers do have a mode that shuts off the video circuitry for pure music playback. That could be it as well.

Why does Denon require me to have ARC?

It's always possible the hdmi board in the receiver died. That happens. You never said what model it is or how old it is. I would disconnect the receiver from the A/C overnight. This does a sort of low level reset, and it's amazing what it can fix. Sometimes this stuff gets stuck. Also...

I should have asked. In what way did the Denon stop working?

Why does Denon require me to have ARC?

No. I swear, customer service is useless at most companies. The TV does NOT need to have ARC if you're not using ARC. You didn't need a new TV. Unbelievable. Clearly something in the configuration of the receiver or TV, or both, was changed and caused it to stop working. Think about what...

The Official "What Speakers or Subwoofer Should I Buy" Assistance Thread

I realize that's the conventional belief, but why? I mean, from a perspective of physics, why is that? Certainly the actual floor won't vibrate when it's on concrete, but most of the bass we perceive is sound waves traveling through the air. The concrete structure prevents those waves from...

Blu-ray Review Poor Things Blu-ray Review

This is just my personal opinion, but I prefer to know as little as possible when going into a new film. Just a general idea of what it might be, but nothing more. I find it far more rewarding to enjoy the exploration of what it is, and try to stay open-minded.

Improve the dialogue in my HT

Complaints about comprehending dialog are common. Unless the center speaker is damaged, it's highly unlikely it's a hardware problem, so I wouldn't jump in and buy new equipment expecting it to solve anything. I see nothing that should be physically causing a problem with the setup. So, it's...
