What was your very first movie on physical media purchase?

I’m not sure if this has been done before but I don’t recall seeing it during my years at the HTF.

I skipped the VHS/Beta years and bought a laser disc player. My first movie purchases were Grease, Hello Dolly, Dr. No and The King And I. Unthinkable now but they were all pan and scan. But three of the titles were in true stereo.

I'm too young to have bought my first VHS tape but when my dad first bought a VCR, he also got a used copy of Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

For laserdisc, DVD and Blu-ray, Halloween was my first purchase. I think Incredibles 2 was my first UHD and Halloween was my second. :)

My first VHS was Batman ‘89. My first laserdisc was The Lion King. My first DVD was either Batman ‘89 or Starship Troopers. I don’t remember my first HD-DVD or Blu-ray purchases. Probably The Fifth Element. My first UHD disc was Deadpool.

One of the first I remember vividly was getting Raiders of the Lost Ark on VHS, and it was in stereo! Was so exciting being able to watch my favorite movie at home any time I wanted on my 4 speaker "surround sound".

I think my first VHS purchase might have been ET. I think it was $20 when almost everything else was over $100.

VHS copy of The Third Man. Thankfully I only bought a few tapes and went to laserdisc and I think the first one I bought was McCabe & Mrs. Miller which came out in 1991.

I *think* mine was Frankenstein (1931) or Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) on VHS. One of very few VHS titles I purchased (I didn't purchase many pre-recorded tapes due to how easily they could be damaged).

My first DVD purchase was The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring extended edition - and I only had a computer DVD player at the time.

Edit to add:
I never purchased LD - too expensive for my budget.

I have *no* idea what the first BR I purchased was - possibly The Terror (1963) as it was released in a DVD/BR combo pack and I really wanted that remastered DVD. I recall thinking "Well... I might purchase a BR player some day..." as I never intended to upgrade formats (DVDs looked "good enough"). Then a friend gifted me his old Sony BR player (it had component outputs and could connect to my CRT TV - no BR players at that point still had those) and the floodgates opened.

I have no idea. What I vaguely remember...

My first VHS deck was a massive top loader that could have doubled as a boat anchor. It was purchased in late '79 or maybe sometime during '80.

Living in a small town there were no local retailers. I believe that a lot of my early titles were purchased via a mail order club with Magnetic Video releases comprising a decent amount of my purchases. Started purchasing locally when the malls in Houston began carrying a larger lineup of titles around that same time.

Some of the more memorable films that I do recall from the early days include: Carnal Knowledge, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, and A Boy and His Dog (something of a pattern there. :) )

I had a Sony Umatic 3/4 inch cassette recorder. I got it in LA at Henry Radio at a little over $2000.
I had to take out one of those sleazy loans to pay for it and was on a waiting list behind Frank Sinatra!
I was able to also get 4 one hour $25 tapes for $100, and the goal that first night was to own The Ten Commandments recorded from the annual broadcast!
My first VHS was Star Wars and again, it was about $100 for a tape Fox really didn't want to sell, so they priced it accordingly.
On Laser, The King and I was the first stereo disc I remember. In a couple of years I had maybe 20 stereo films and one year at CES they announced a decoder that would unlock the already encoded surround sound on those discs. That was like the ultimate surprise "Xmas Gift"!
To this day, The 10 Commandments has never attained the discreet surround that is present on the first Laser Disc release. When the Pharaoh banishes Moses from the court, his voice switches to the rear as the POV changes. Later when Moses tends the sheep and Joshua appears...the sheep are everywhere!
Since then, the picture has improved, but the wonder of stereo and surround will always be a sweet memory of those first LD stereo discs.

If memory serves, my first movie I bought after getting a VHS player was Used Cars.
I think I paid $60 for the tape. Those were the days- paying $60-$100 for a wrong aspect ratio video that was of poor quality, and the tape degraded when played often. How far we’ve come!

When I bought my first laserdisc player, I’m almost positive that the Clint Eastwood film Sudden Impact was my first disc purchase (once again, in the wrong aspect ratio 😁).

My first DVD purchase was Dolores Claiborne.

My first BluRay was Terminator 2.

I can’t remember what my first UHD purchase was.

First VHS purchase: I think two episodes of The Goodies, a wacky British TV series. It was around 1986 and the episodes were from 1982, but I was still at school and four years ago seemed like an eternity. It was like receiving half-remembered relics from the past.

The first film was A View To A Kill, which I bought for an eye-watering price: £60. This was also in 1986.

First DVD purchase: I bought a few the same day as the player. Gladiator, Austin Powers 2, True Romance (in a snapper case) and Das Boot.

First Blu-Ray purchase: Another bulk buy: Moonraker, Space Patrol (vintage puppet series), Salo, and Red Desert.

First UHD purchase: 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I remember watching The Goodies when I was a kid.

I was a LONG time ago, but I THINK it was a VHS of Valley of the Dolls on Fox's Magnetic Video label. Pan and scan, of course, but, oh, did it make me a hit at after-performance parties at cast members' homes that had a VCR.

First: A STAR IS BORN 1937 Goodtimes Home Video $9.99

First legit studio purchase: THE SOUND OF MUSIC CBS/FOX at the new sell through price of $29.95! 🤣
The audio was far enough out of sync during Do Re Mi as to allow for a freight train to pass. Anyone remember that? It was the double slip sleeve release post slider box and just prior to the dual tapes being packaged in the single double sleeve.
