The Disclaimer

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in…as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don’t get paid for this, and I don’t have the time to list every DVD. So, please don’t complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

  1. Hey RoundUppers!

Yet another big week! Lots of releases. Lots of variety. Hope there's something for you.

For me, this week, I've pre-ordered two blind buys: Yesterday and Anna. I will likely find myself picking up The Letter and The Circus sometime down the road. Maybe The Major and the Minor, too.

Thanks for the support each week…and the "likes."

    Safe shopping!

  2. Thank you, Mike!

But nothing for me this week (which is perfectly fine with me, because October is quite loaded with important new titles, so I'll take a breather week where I can get one.)

I'm perfectly happy with the earlier Platinum Edition of Sleeping Beauty and the Diamond Edition of 101 Dalmatians and feel no need to "upgrade" those.

I wish I liked Yesterday more, but I wasn't a fan of it in theaters, so I don't need that either. Hopefully you enjoy it more than I did.

  3. Jake Lipson

Yeah. I've got some trepidation about that one. I like Lily James a lot…

    I like Lily James a lot…

So do I, but if she is the main reason you want to see it, you'll be disappointed. She is as good as the script lets her be, but her role is exclusively to be "the girl." And it doesn't even let her sing any Beatles songs either, even though Mamma Mia! proved she's got the vocal chops.

It's not a bad movie, but I think it's a missed opportunity to do something richer and more unique with a cool premise than the sort of generic romantic comedy they ended up with.

  5. Yesterday on UHD and "Legends of Tomorrow" Season 4 on Blu-Ray, but both down the road when the price comes down.

Thanks as always for your hard work, Mike!

For what it's worth, I liked it a lot, probably as much as Jake disliked it. It seems to be a very divisive movie; it either works for you or it doesn't. It worked for me.

  6. Adam Lenhardt

it either works for you or it doesn't.

I agree with this. For this reason, I would personally suggest a rental rather than a blind purchase for anyone who missed it in theaters, because that's a less costly way to determine which side of the fence you fall on (unless of course you end up liking it, in which case you'd spend twice to rent and buy.)

  7. It''s strange that "Shaft" 4K/UHD would be a Best Buy exclusive as it wasn't a box office success, but whatever. I'll buy the 4K stream on iTunes once it discounts down to $9.99. I might do the same with "Yesterday" if iTunes adds Dolby Atmos later on. Anna is another such candidate.

  8. I intended to cancel a preorder for The Stand…but Amazon shipped it way early. I’m gonna decide if I want to keep it or not. The price point is a bit steep for me.

Otherwise, it looks like Target has a Buy 2 Get 1 deal both online and in store.

    Thanks Mike!

  9. Sam Posten

I'm reviewing it now. Don't expect it to look Bluray quality. It's 1994 3:2 TV quality with everything that entails. HDDN has screenshots too.

I respect Justin but I totally disagree with his assessment of this as a 4.5 outta 5. This is soft and janky with tons of compression macro blocks.

Look at the hair and eyes.

Being an early 90s TV movie, I'm not expecting a ton in terms of look and sound. I was kinda expecting the price point to drop, though. But you don't have any control over that. 😉

This latest Target Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal kind of sucks. It appears a lot more titles are restricted this time around.

I don't know that it's a BB exclusive. It's the only place I could find it listed (out of the three retailers left in the grid). The BB listing didn't denote any exclusivity status and I figured it my be MIA at Amazon because its a WB title.

    Could be.

This latest Target Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal kind of sucks. It appears a lot more titles are restricted this time around.

I did an admittedly quick search just now and find about 9,500 movies with the Buy 2 Get 1 Free promotion. The original prices are pretty garbage (IMO) and in store availability is the same (in this area).

The only things I'd be looking for are the catalogue Marvel and Pixar films. None are available locally…and I can get them all cheaper through the Disney Movie Club.

I'm talking about Kino and Shout titles that appear to be not eligible for this sale. I thought they were in prior sales.

I see that Target added a bunch of titles to that sale since yesterday so many of those Kino and Shout titles are now eligible.

I forgot about one other film I pre-ordered this week. Buddy. It is a DVD-only release.

    The product description from Amazon:

In this poignant and carefully composed portrait of six service dogs and their owners, renowned documentary filmmaker Heddy Honigmann explores the close bond between animal and human. Honigmann questions the owners in her characteristic way respectfully and with genuine concern rooted in a deep trust about what the animals mean to them. BUDDY is an ode to the fighting spirit of the main characters and a loving portrait of the deep bond between man and dog.

This is the kind of film that really speaks to me and Peg. She writes regularly about the human/animal bond–which seems to be what this film is all about.

Amazon has let me know that Anna is going to be a week or two late getting to me (October 2nd). Buddy and Yesterday are each expected to arrive tomorrow.

  17. My review for the just released Stephen King's The Stand Blu Ray.

"I received my copy from Amazon today. When I saw that they fit all 6 hours on one disc I was worried and that worry was justified as image quality isn't the best it could be even for a film shot on 16mm and sound is dolby digital stereo. However I would still recommend this release since it is still much better than the existing DVD which had tons of EE."
