The Disclaimer

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in…as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don’t get paid for this, and I don’t have the time to list every DVD. So, please don’t complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

The Specials

–Another week with some big Disney releases and an inability to purchase those titles at Amazon…

–For pricing particulars, Best Buy’s Weekly Ad is available at THIS LINK.

–Best Buy, this week, has EXCLUSIVE STEELBOOK PACKAGING with their Blu copies of The Lion King.  No prices given…just that the title is available “starting at $19.99.”  BB also says other Disney Classics are also “starting at $19.99 on Blu-ray.”  Titles shown are:  Bambi, Pinocchio and Beauty and the Beast (1991).

–Best Buy also continues its deal to get a FREE $10 BB GIFTCARD when you spend $50 or more on select TV seasons Limit 3 bundles per customer.  Best Buy adds (in its newfound confounding way) that “New TV Seasons starting at $17.99 available Tuesday.”

–In continued confounding vagueness, BB says that it has recent Blu-ray releases on sale this week at Best Buy “Starting at $19.99.”  Titles shown:  The Walking Dead: S7, DC: Legends of Tomorrow: S2, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.

–Best Buy is advertising an EXCLUSIVE RELEASE of Batman and Harley Quinn.  It costs $29.99 and includes a graphic novel and figurine of Harley Quinn.

From last week's RoundUp:

Well, I expect there to still be an image of her in the RoundUp. :)

Oh. Okay. If I HAVE to:

Just a heads up, Son of Paleface has dropped to $13.33 on Amazon. Had to pull the trigger on it. That's probably all for me this week although I'm sure I'll rent Baywatch at some point to see if it's as bad as I've heard.

“Son of Paleface” has been preordered for about a week.

Looking forward to “Star Wars Rebels: Season 3”.
I’ll probably get it at Target. The “Twin Suns” ep alone is worth the price of admission.

Since we’re now starting the second year of the Amazon/Disney “feud”, it’s evident that Amazon will no longer have Disney preorders available for physical media. In retrospect, we should have figured this out when Amazon passed on “Rogue One”. If the two parties couldn’t settle their differences prior to the release of that title, there was really no hope that they could settle things going forward.

Thanks for the RoundUp listing, Mike, and for including the links in the charts.

Some of these PR firms have gotten very lackadaisical about sending review copies in time to review before street date. CBS, always one of the best in previous years, didn't get me the Elementary (which I'm working on currently) and NCIS review copies until yesterday. Disney didn't contact me about Born in China until Thursday. Haven't heard from Fox if I'm going to get My Cousin Rachel or not. So, those reviews are pending but not available currently.

Four for me, after a couple of weeks of holding off purchases:
  • Erik the Conquerer (Arrow)
  • Ronin (Arrow)
  • Son of Paleface (Kino)
  • The Wedding Banquet (Olive)
Not too impressed with Best Buy's Exclusive Lion King Steelbook, but maybe it looks better in person:

Thanks, Mike, for your work.

If I already have TLK what does this version get me?

There are some new bonus features which Matt detailed in his review, BUT mot of the old bonus features are now digital exclusives, so that makes it difficult to get rid of previous sets. And it's the same transfer as before. So, the question becomes: how badly do you want the new extras?

I have not double dipped on any of the previous Signature Collection releases, but The Lion King is the top of the top for me as my #2 favorite film of all time (behind only Aladdin.) So in my case, the answer is "pretty bad," and for this particular film I will swallow hard and double dip.

Best Buy's website currently shows $19.99 for the standard edition and $24.99 for the steelbook, which matches what they priced Guardians at this week. I'll be going for the regular edition because, like Rodney, I don't like the steelbook cover much (okay, at all), but even if I did i probably wouldn't be able to get one anyway. At least I got Best Buy's original steelbook for the 2011 edition, which looks beautiful (with Rafiki's drawing of Simba above the title as the cover.)

Though they are not advertised in any ads that I've seen, and therefore Mike didn't include them in the Roundup, it's worth noting for those who want them that Disney is also re-releasing the Lion Kings sequels this week. Unlike most of the sequels, they believe thee will sell individually, so both The Lion King 1 1/2 and The Lion King II: Simba's Pride are receiving their own release instead of being a 2-movie collection, and they're not Disney Movie Club exclusives either. I don't expect the sequels to have anything different from last time (other than digital copies, which aren't essential to me), so will stick with my previous discs of those movies. But if you're a Lion King fan and don't already have them, check them out, because in this specific case, Disney's direct-to-video sequel people actually made two things that are very good. Not up to the standard of the original, but then almost nothing is up to the standard of the original, and these are tons better than they have any right to be.

Nothing else for me this week.

Mike thanks for the Round-up I think you found a very good solution to the Best Buy pricing issue :)

According to the reviewer...

Special Features: 3.5/5
Audio Commentary: contributed by producer Don Hahn and directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. It’s a lively reminiscence by the three men and offers many anecdotes related to the making of the movie (many of which turn up in other bonus features).

it's the same commentary. The intros by the directors to some of the new bonus features are new.

Visualizing a Villain (2:53, HD): to the soundtrack accompaniment of Jeremy Irons’ “Be Prepared,” artist David Garibaldi creates a painting of evil.

The Recording Sessions (4:46, HD): directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff present brief low resolution video clips of the voice actors recording their roles for the film.

Inside the Story Room (23:42, HD): directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff present five story sequence pitches (in low resolution quality) filmed during story conferences for the movie. The sequences are “Circle of Life,” Simba/Nala being groomed, Simba Takes Nala to Play, “Hakuna Matata,” and the Reflection Pool.

Nathan and Matthew: The Extended Lion King Conversation (7:08, HD): in 2011 at Sardi’s, the two actors with producer Thomas Schumacher recall their varied experiences being cast and recording their dialogue.

Blooper Reel (3:44, HD): some outtakes in the sound booth have been meticulously animated to make a very entertaining blooper reel.P*

“The Morning Report” (2:30, HD): the new song sequence which was added into the extended edition of the movie. P*

Deleted Scenes (12:42, HD): five scenes may be viewed individually or in montage.(P*? 4 deleted scenes + 1 deleted song listed in 2011)

Song Selection (16:49, HD): the five song sequences in the movie can be played individually or together with sing-along lyrics printed on the screen.

Classic Bonus Features Preview (0:50, HD): a preview of the remaining hours of bonus features appearing on previous Lion King DVD and Blu-ray releases that have been relegated to the digital copy of the movie.

Promo Trailer (HD): Coco

Limited Edition Film Frames: three frames of 35mm film of the Pride Rock sequence.

DVD/Digital Copy: disc and code sheet enclosed in the case.P*
(P* Previously included in the 2011 Bluray release comparing the 2011 case)

Batman and Harley Quinn is coming from Amazon. I preordered a while ago and it's coming to me for $16.32 (as of right now). I'd like Born in China, but I likely have to wait on that until next payday. Also have Rise of the Federation: Patterns of Interference ordered. I'm not quite all caught up with the Enterprise books, but I figure it doesn't hurt to get any new Trek books as they come out so I can have them ready when I get there.

Thanks, as always, Mike!

A few new bonuses. The DMA digital assuming you didn't have teh prior 3D disc.

the 1.5 second missing background receding Clouds have been restored from the Mufasa/Rafiki/Simba "Remember -- you have forgotten me -- you are the one true King" scene around 67.5 minutes. I personally never thought the removal/missing receding clouds made even a minimal difference in the way the scene plays, but for some people that makes a difference to them

I did get the new Lion King from Best Buy. It is in fact $19.99 for the regular edition (which wasn't specified in the ad) and $24.99 for the steelbook, which was for once NOT sold out yet at my store...but it looks so awful I went with the regular edition.
