The Disclaimer

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in…as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don’t get paid for this, and I don’t have the time to list every DVD. So, please don’t complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

  1. Thank you for your work, Mike.

A big week for me in terms of releases I want — more than I would possibly be able to afford in a given week — including the Gkids Studio Gibli releases; The Good Place; Crazy Ex-Girlfriend; and Spider-Man.

While I understand the appeal for Gkids of releasing their Gibli titles in large batches, as it gets their product on the shelves sooner to replace Disney's older versions, releasing six at once is bound to be cost-prohibitive for all but the richest fans. I'll start with Kiki's Delivery Service now, which for some reason I never picked up on BD when Disney released it, and I expect I'll end up with the others at some point down the line.

The Good Place and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend are among my favorite comedy series, but as they are only on DVD and not receiving Blu-ray editions, they can wait for now.

Spider-Man I'm sure will end up with a price drop/sale sooner rather than later.

  2. Jake Lipson

Spider-Man I'm sure will end up with a price drop/sale sooner rather than later.

Me too…that's why I'm gonna hold out on it for a while.

BB will apparently have Serenity for $17.99 on UHD, which is well within my price point. I'll probably pick that up later in the week with Apollo 13 and Starship Troopers.

Batman vs. Two Face is on the radar too.I'm mildly surprised this isn't on UHD since the last DC animated movie (Batman and Harley Quinn) made it onto the format.

I don't think I missed any Cartwheel deals this week, right Mike? 😮 And thank you.

  3. Thanks, Mike. I have the UHD version of Apollo 13 on pre-order, and will pick up the UHD of Serenity when the price drops. Nothing else for me. Barry Lyndon is not one of my favorite Kubrick films, so I don't plan on getting the Criterion version.

  4. Thanks, as always, for the time and effort you put into this each and every week, Mike! We all appreciate it.

Just a couple for me this week:

    Three O’Clock High (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray)
This is an underrated film that should have done better on its initial release. Glad to replace my DVD
Ernie Kovacs: Take A Good Look: The Definitive Collection
I bought this direct from Shout Factory to get the bonus disc they offered.

  5. Throwing out a potential sale which I have NO information other than the usual timing.

CRITERION FLASH sale is due and this week seems to be the most likely timing. Last year it was Monday Oct 17 and that's the latest the Fall sale ever happened. So M/Tues and maybe Th are the most likely days.

BN sale hasn't shown any rumors yet, but Oct 31 or Nov 7 would be the most likely start days.

    Three O’Clock High (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray)

Thanks for mentioning Three O'Clock High. I totally missed that it was coming out this week.

I see that the Stranger Things target exclusive is BD only, no 4K, right? Odd since the show was in 4K/HDR. Does anyone know if a future 4K UHD release is planned?

At this point, we're lucky to even get a blu-ray release for a TV show. Many of them are released DVD only, if at all to physical media.

If I were a fan, the issue here would be it's a Target exclusive and there are no Target stores within 100 miles. I guess I could buy it online, but still. It would be easier to buy it at Walmart or Best Buy.

Though I sort of wonder if maybe many retailers may not have been interested in taking on a series already readily available via streaming? Maybe Target was the only retailer that showed interest?

  8. I would like to make everyone aware of the release of the documentary STEP, which I didn't know was coming out this week until I got an email about it, and its extremely low profile probably explains why Mike didn't put it in the Roundup (I'm guessing he didn't know it was out this week either.) But I saw it in the theater a couple months ago and it is absolutely wonderful. If you enjoy a good doc, I would highly reccomend a rental on this.

People might be surprised at the number of titles which DON'T get included on any given week in a RoundUp.

Many years ago I made a deliberate decision NOT to include anime or professional wrestling titles. Also, no physical fitness titles. But, each week, there are any number of less-known titles which fall by the wayside as I try to limit things to those titles which are of general interest to the wide-reaching membership of the HTF. 'Tis the hard work of the editor…

I'm always thrilled when members (such as Jake does above) bring awareness to a title which "didn't make the cut." So, bring 'em on!

Since you asked :), Summer Of Fear (a 1978 Wes Craven TV movie with Linda Blair) came out today. It's backordered on Amazon but they want $15.99 for it. I haven't seen the disc and I've never heard of the company releasing it so I can't speak to its quality or lack thereof.

  11. Malcolm R

Normally I agree with this. However ST pulled a GoT in terms of popularity + acclaim, so for this I would have expected a UHD release especially for something already showing in 4K and wouldn't have required "extra work".

  12. Any difference in these gkids (?) release of Ghibli movies and precious Disney releases?

Is it ok if I pretend the James Garfield Spider-Man movies don’t exist and just go straight to the new Spider-Man Homecoming that’s tied into the MCU?

  13. DaveF

Is it ok if I pretend the James Garfield Spider-Man movies don’t exist and just go straight to the new Spider-Man Homecoming that’s tied into the MCU?

I don't see why not. The first Andrew Garfield movie is serviceable; the second was a mess. And they don't have anything to do with Homecoming or the MCU.

If you want to be a completist, though, you'll need to see both of them.

  14. DaveF

I spent yesterday at Monticello hearing about Presidents.

    But I’m certain James Garfield would have been a bad-ass President-Spider-Man! 😀

    You know it!

He's already had experience in the comics…

AND…the man could wear a hat!

  15. Three O'Clock High?! Wow! As someone pointed out, this is very underrated. If you haven't seen it, it's visually comparable to Scorsese's After Hours. I'm all over this. I just wish I had known about this release sooner. We watched this with the kids over the summer and I was thinking at the time what a shame it was this would probably never get a Blu release.

  16. DaveF

Any difference in these gkids (?) release of Ghibli movies and precious Disney releases?

Depends on the title. All of them have received new transfers directly from Gibli's animation masters, and subtitles have been updated in some cases. The extras drop anything Disney produced (like the John Lassater introductions) and include anything produced by Gibli, so some of them include new-to-Region-A extras. If you go to GKIDS' Twitter account, they posted individual specs for each title. It's also worth noting that they don't have any annoying startup ads or other junk like Disney's versions did and just go directly to the main menu.

I got Kiki's Delivery Service yesterday and I never had the Disney Blu-ray release of that, but I am really pleased with the quality of the Gkids edition. It looks so beautiful it almost sparkles. Gkids was founded by a guy who decided to go into foreign animation specifically because of owning Kiki as a kid, so the company exists because of Gibli's work, and getting the rights to the Gibli catalog has been a dream of theirs for a while, so I really believe they want to do the best job possible on these titles. Whether that makes them worth a double dip to you is a matter of personal taste and might likely vary based on each title.

  17. Ideally there would be a definitive site that compared the GKids and Disney versions. Many of the Disney versions had "Dubtitles" vs. true subtitles, and even if A/V quality were the same, I'd re-buy the GKids version for the more accurate subtitles. Any A/V improvement would be icing on the cake.

  18. I’m a little disappointed in this, in that a bought a handful of Disney ghibli blu-rays last year. I had no idea there might be a re-iteration and re-release.

I’ll just leave these alone for now. Maybe look at a 4K re-buy in a couple years 🙂

  19. DaveF

I had no idea there might be a re-iteration and re-release.

If it makes you feel any better, neither did anybody else. The announcement that GKIDS was taking over as distributor was made in July when the titles that came out this week were dated. There wasn't advance discussion of this outside of between Gibli and Gkids and Disney as far as I know.

As far as a 4K release, I assume that would be Gibli's call. Have they embraced that format yet for their Japanese releases?

Mike; May I assume that if Scarlett Johannsen appeared in a professional wrestling disc that this rule would be altered?
Thanks again for the Roundup. You’ve got a lot of fans out here -we just don’t post all the time.

  21. Carlo Medina

The remaining question: do I assume GKids did the other titles justice in the same way and blind buy all of them? I’m tempted…

I would. I have a few other releases from them and they are all terrific. These guys love these films and I'm sure they want the corrected subs and extras themselves, so they're not going to skimp on these releases. The only reason I am not immediately buying all six of them is because I can't afford them all right now, but if I had more disposable income, I would get them all in a second. The fact that these films are now with a distributor that loves and respects them and wants to do right by them is the best home video news this year, in my opinion.

Thanks again for the Roundup. You’ve got a lot of fans out here -we just don’t post all the time.

    Carlo Medina

I’d watch ScarJo read from a phone book.

    In a bikini, preferably.

Larry: Thanks for those kind words. And, yes, the rule would be altered! 😀

I might even consider buying my first wrestling disc if ScarJo were to appear.

Maybe she could be the ring announcer. And read from the phonebook…in a bikini.

  23. Carlo Medina

I'll get the other 2 next month.

Be aware that next month (well, Halloween, but close enough) also includes the Gkids reissues of Castle in the Sky and Naussica. And Gkids and Fathom Events are presenting Spirited Away theatrically on 10/29 (dub) and 11/1 (sub.)

  24. Mike Frezon

we are still waiting for a Region A release of Scoop…

Great excuse to post photos aside, in all seriousness, I would buy that, but Universal/Focus seem uninterested in releasing many of their older catalog titles to Blu-ray. Besides Scoop, there's also Far From Heaven; Lust/Caution; A Bronx Tale; and those are only the ones off the to p of my head that I want.

  25. Anyone interested in the Gibli reissues should check their local Target. I went in for other things today and was surprised to find the new Gkids edition of Spirited Away for $15.99, which is less than Amazon is selling it for. My store also had the new Gkids DVD edition of Howl's Moving Castle for $11.99, which seems to me to be a good price if you're into that format, but there was no Blu-ray in stock for it. I looked but didn't see any of the other Gibli titles except these two.

My Target is also offering $5 gift cards immediately if you get your flu shot at their pharmacy, so I did and picked up the new Spirited Away for about $10+tax, which seemed a reasonable price for a double dip for the new subtitles. I assume the flu shot gift card deal is probably a national promotion.

I also picked up the new director's cut of Dreamgirls, which was on sale for about $12. The package indicated that there was a Target-exclusive bonus disc in with this as well. It turns out that the Target bonus disc is a duplicate copy of the bonus disc from the original 2007 Blu-ray release, which has been out of print for a while, and those bonus features are not included in the non-Target general release of the director's cut. So, if you go to Target and get the version with the bonus disc, you may be able to then unload the 2007 release without losing supplements. (I have to check the first disc of the old edition to be sure of this.)
