Veteran army scout Sam Varner (Gregory Peck) agrees to escort a former Apache captive (Eva Marie Saint) and her half-Apache son to safety across a sprawling Southwest of desert wastelands and imposing mountains. But shadowing their path is a renegade killer dead set on getting the boy back.

Peck powerfully reunites with his To Kill a Mockingbird producer, Alan J. Pakula, and director, Robert Mulligan, for a suspenseful tale with the direct leanness and hypnotic landscape of classic Westerns. Events tighten around Varner, his charges and his best friend (Robert Forster) like a noose. The siege is relentless. The terror grows. And the stage is set for a final, violent showdown between hunter and hunted.

Nice to see another Robert Mulligan release.

It's a good film and another WA release I'll be buying next month.

This film was nowhere on my radar either, but Gregory Peck AND Eva Marie Saint? I'll order it as soon as the link is up.

I love this film so I'm thrilled about this release. It's a beautifully made, sort of spooky, Western.

Good film? It's a very good film, and unusual too. It's a suspense Western and strangely little known. I've been lucky enough to have seen really good prints and it looked magnificent: Charles Lang - Panavision - Technicolor. The DVD did not do it justice. I very much hope this forthcoming Blu-ray disc will enable me to re-recreate in my house the splendid images I saw more than once in theaters.

I've been waiting a long time for this to come out on Blu. It's not your typical Mulligan film. If Polanski or Antonioni had made a suspense western it might have turned out like this. It takes the expanses of the desert--the great American landcape--and handles it the way Hitchcock shot Bates' Motel; as an object of dread and claustrophobia. It's very modernist and European in its tendencies, which of course I have no problem with. Being a Mulligan film, it has an amazing sense of pictorialism. I want it for the photography alone. Never before has an American director made the desert moon seem so sinister. It's almost a horror film, but with a very strong existential element. The film also appears to be an allegory, which does link it up with "Ride the Whirlwind" & "The Shooting". It definitely weaves a spell, but you kind of have to go along with it, without preconceptions.

This film was a HUGE flop during its brief run, which is why few have seen it and some never even heard of it. It's really not too great, but the best thing about it is the great score by Fred Karlin. This was the beginning of a very pad period for Mulligan.

It was a flop, but the movie has been out in in public realm for a number of years. I've seen it available on cable for many years. Even Warner released it on DVD in a 2008 Western Classics Collection with other titles like "Cimarron", "Escape from Fort Bravo", "The Law and Jake Wade" and "Saddle the Wind" just to name some of them. It's also available in HD digital on iTunes. I almost bought the iTunes digital, but have been waiting for the price to drop from $9.99 to $4.99. Now, I'll just buy the WAC release as it will be derived from an updated transfer.

It was one week in and then out at the theatre I worked in years ago. An interesting movie.

I always thought this film was the beginning of his downward spiral, this and The Pursuit of Happiness, but that's not correct, as he had a huge hit with Summer of 42. Then came The Other, a film I really like but which wasn't much of a hit. THEN came Nickel Ride, which was a disaster. As was Bloodbrothers, but then he rebounded with Same Time, Next Year. The fact is, he made several of my all-time favorite films, starting with The Great Imposter (and where's THAT on Blu-ray - I don't even think it made it to a properly released DVD),

Good movie, a different and dark western for sure with a good performance by Peck. Another great release from Warner Archive. The dark feel of the movie reminds me of Ulzanna's Raid in some ways

I knew many, including me, criticize the “big face” cover art. This one, if what’s pictured is the cover art, is very good.
