The USS Reluctant carries cargo along World War II’s forgotten Pacific seaways. Beyond the horizon, the real war passes its stir-crazy crew by. Mister Roberts, directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy, is the classic story of men fighting to survive – not war’s dangers, but its indignities. Henry Fonda’s reprise of his Tony®-winning Broadway role returned him to movies after seven years away. Jack Lemmon won his first Academy Award® as hapless, lecherous Ensign Pulver. James Cagney’s petty, scrappy Captain makes a fierce adversary. In his final film, William Powell makes world-weary Doc a sage for the ages. Mister Roberts has moments of unforgettable humor. But sadness tempers the comedy. No shot is fired. No blood is spilled. Yet Mister Roberts endures as one of our most truthful war sagas.

Only one snapper case left for me, Start The Revolution Without Me, maybe next year. The story of the making of Mister Roberts would make for a good movie; three directors (John Ford, Mervyn LeRoy & Joshua Logan), four if you include a few scenes directed by Ward Bond! John Ford famously punching the star Henry Fonda & turning up for filming drunk. The film should have been a disaster, but it was very successful, & it should have been the end of Jon Ford's career, but the following year he directed a little western called The Searchers. You can read the full story in Joseph McBride's great biography of Ford, Searching For John Ford.

Of course, I am ecstatic about this announcement.

I was supposed to watch MISTER ROBERTS on HBO MAX weeks ago. I kept putting it off for some reason. Now I can skip the streaming and support the Archive with this purchase.

Thank You, Warner! Thank you, George!

You should also read Henry Fonda's account of the so-called punching incident. He says Ford didn't punch him: he only pushed him.

Hooray! Another of my grails bites the dust! That leaves only Angels in the Outfield (1951), Aresnic and Old Lace, The Late Show and The Sea Wolves from Warner.

Oo, the 22nd would be tight for Christmas, & definitely too late for us in the UK. No matter, a great way to start next year, which will hopefully be better than this one!

I don’t believe there’s a mis-step in this movie. It is fabulous. Fonda, Cagney, Powell, Lemon, and Bond. And very deep acting bench. The actor who did Route 66 has a brief but memorable part. I’m too lazy to go to imdb. Cagney’s captain is one of those men who shouldn’t be a leader, who has risen to his level of incompetence and Cagney just nails it.

If this is Powell’s last movie, he went out on top. Lemon is fabulous and cements his Oscar near the end. As RH would say, highly recommended.

Martin Milner was also in Adam-12.

I would have been 9 in 1955 and I remember seeing this in a theater. And I loved it. I’m not sure how 9 year-old me would have reacted to the movie. Did Mister Roberts get a re-release?
