With boundless enthusiasm and enough jive to meld ’20s flapper giddiness with ’40s swing, 1947’s Good News - the feature directing debut of Charles Walters (Easter Parade, The Unsinkable Molly Brown) and screenwriting debut of Betty Comden and Adolph Green (Singin’ in the Rain, The Band Wagon) - is “one of the best of the lighthearted rah-rah collegiate musicals” (Pauline Kael, The New Yorker). Peter Lawford (as a campus football hero) and June Allyson (as the super-smart co-ed who tutors him) lead a high-spirited cast that includes Mel Torme and Broadway’s Joan McCracken. “The Varsity Drag” and Best Song Oscar® nominee “Pass That Peace Pipe” stand out among the numbers that are all zip and joy. And the bee’s knees.

I thought I couldn't wait for my Dec. WAC titles to get here. Now, I can't wait for the new year. WAC - what are you doing to me?!?! The only thing that could make these announcements better are subsequent announcements for Best Foot Forward, Show Boat, Holiday in Mexico, National Velvet and Scaramouche! But I digress. June, Peter and the whole gang. Rah! Rah! Rah! Sis-boom-bah! Have you heard? Very 'good news' indeed!

JOAN McCRACKEN and the astonishing "Pass the Peace Pipe".
Joan was Bob Fosse's second wife.. "McCracken was generous in promoting the careers of other dancers, including Shirley MacLaine, and was a strong influence on her second husband, Bob Fosse, encouraging him to become a choreographer. She was noted for unconventional behavior and was one of a number of real-life counterparts to inspire the character of Holly Golightly in her friend Truman Capote's novella Breakfast at Tiffany's."

A few more facts about GOOD NEWS:

Peter Lawford filled the role that had been proposed for Van Johnson or Mickey Rooney. Lawford didn’t want to do it because he thought his British accent would be wrong. In the “French Lesson” sequence, Lawford spoke perfect French while June Allyson, his teacher, couldn’t. French replaced astronomy from the original version.

Gloria De Haven declined the college siren role and was put on suspension.

“Pass That Peace Pipe” was not in the original GOOD NEWS but intended for ZIEGFELD FOLLIES.

Betty Comden said that the 3 best movies were BIRTH OF A NATION, POTEMPKIN, and GOOD NEWS. (I somewhat agree.)

Yes, Good News was going to be a Garland-Rooney musical to be made during the same early 1940s period that their other co-starring vehicles were done, but both were so busy with other projects that it kept getting pushed back on the schedule.
