A reasonably satisfying screen adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age novel, Jack Cardiff’s Sons and Lovers captures the feel of an era superbly and possesses a handful of sensational performances, but there’s a sometimes stiffness to the dialogue that renders it at best too knowing and at worst somewhat ridiculous. Directed by award-winning cinematographer Jack Cardiff with an authenticity that’s often striking and with wonderfully interesting cinematic compositions, Sons and Lovers is rather brilliant to look at even when the story trundles its way somewhat rudimentarily toward its inevitable conclusion.
