  1. The StudioCanal 4K UHD is really good upgrade over the existing Universal blu-ray, so this release using the same master ought to be a no-brainer for you guys over the pond. I initially thought there was noise in the picture when I first viewed it but I've re-calibrated my projector and it now looks more or less pristine.

At last a good cover for The Deer Hunter.

well better ,but not Good Shout! could possibly be sued over this jacket. De Niro's contract guaranteed him solo name-above-the-title billing — and the words "A Michael Cimino Film" should be right below.

  3. Wow! Of all the movies dealing with that WAR i.e. Go Tell The Spartans, Platoon, Coming Home, and others that slip my mind at the moment, this is the DEFINITIVE re-telling of the waste that our government created for a generation of young men & women. My wish for this release is, if possible, Shout Factory can CLEAN-UP the soundtrack. What comes to my mind is the DIALOGUE in the opening scene during the end-of-shift – difficult to understand. Another: the wedding ceremony when the chorus sings – lots of distortion. Overall, I'm thrilled & anticipating what this will look like!!

I bet nobody on either side of the negotiation table foresaw home video releases 40 years down the line. Those contracts were for release and promotion of the theatrical run.

well the bonus disc is a Blu Ray,not sure if its region B

Both DIsc 2(1080p movie) & 3(special features) included with the 4k release are region locked but do play on my Panasonic UB420 with the top menu button workaround.

Scott, what is the top menu workaround for the 420???
Mine is locked to zone B and would dearly love to be able to play A zoned BDs.

On my Player (not a 420) when you get the "This Disc Won't Play" (or words to that effect) Screen: Press the Top Menu Key on the Remote (you may need to do it several times). This should bring you to the Main Menu and (assuming the material isn't in an unplayable format eg NTSC) you should be able to watch whatever you select.

I find that on the 420 I have to 1st hit the stop button on the remote when the wrong region/won't play screen comes up then when the player goes back to the main splashscreen then start pushing the top menu button.

Thanks Scott and Bryan-will give it a go!

  10. 1: Ummm, that banner image is NOT from The Deer Hunter. It’s from “The Odd Angry Shot” (1979)
2: This is great news. Let’s just hope Cimino’s commentary is included in this release. For some reason, it has only been on discs outside of the US.

What makes you think that? The subject header of this thread says 4k and the Amazon link above is for 4k.

I don’t think that, I was asking if it was. I see the 4K comes with a Blu Ray, will
Said Blu Ray be available separately?

It helps to be understood if you state things more clearly. For example, "Is this being released as also the Blu-ray alone?"

Very unlikely. StudioCanal hasn't released any of their remastered blu-rays separately, including The Deer Hunter. Kind of defeats the purpose of trying to recoup the outlay on a 4K title.

Looking at Amazon UK The Fog, Escape From NY, They Live, Prince of Darkness and The Deer Hunter all have a seperate1080p bluray release and a 4k release based off new restorations.

My mistake – the blu-rays were all released before the 4K editions! Are there any US remastered 4K UHD/blu-ray combos which have had the blu-rays released separately? Many of the 4K releases I've purchased have old blu rays from previous masters included.
