Sony expands 360 Reality Audio platform

Sony has announced the expansion of its 360 Reality Audio products and services, including adding new video streaming capabilities and content creation tools. The company will continue to enhance the 360 Reality Audio ecosystem, has already streamed live performance content earlier this year, and will make available Reality Audio compatible Wi-Fi-enabled speakers (SRS-RA5000 and SRS-RA3000) from the spring. Introduced in 2019, Sony’s 360 Reality Audio allows artists and creators to produce music by mapping sound sources (e.g. vocals, chorus and instruments) with positional information and placing them within a spherical space. According to Sony, the experience should evoke feelings of being in a music studio or live concert venue.

“360 Reality Audio is a powerful platform that brings listeners an experience that honors the creator’s true intent, and brings artists and fans even closer together,” said Mike Fasulo, president and chief operating officer, Sony Electronics, Inc. “We are thrilled to enhance and expand our audio ecosystem with innovative streaming video, and powerful new ways for musicians to create an amazing experience.”

COVID-19 causes nearly 82% drop in North American box office

The cinema exhibition industry was one of the hardest hit in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, resulting in US and Canada box office revenue and tickets sold dropping by nearly 82% compared to 2019. Research conducted by Trading Platforms reveals, not entirely surprisingly, that both supply and demand were adversely affected last year as the virus forced people to isolate at home.

2020’s recorded $2B is the lowest box office revenue seen in North American territories since 1981, a year which itself represented just under $1B of takings. In the 11 weeks prior to lockdowns across the region, box office earnings amounted to almost $1.7B up until the week of March 19. In the 36 weeks that followed, and up until the week of November 26, box office revenue only totaled $212M. More statistics are available here.
