McIntosh introduces MR89 AM/FM tuner

McIntosh has announced the availability this month of the MR89 AM/FM Tuner for $5,500 from authorized dealers. The company says it has “worked diligently” on a number of advancements to maximize radio listening, with adjustments to sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, harmonic distortion, channel selectivity, and stereo separation.

A signal quality monitor can display detailed signal, multipath, and noise levels of incoming radio signals to help fine-tune optimal placement of the AM or FM antenna (with RAA2 AM antenna included). There are also balanced and unbalanced analog outputs and digital coax and optical outputs to connect the MR89 to a home audio system. The unit includes radio frequency (RF) circuitry to receive FM signals from nearby stations, avoiding overload or distortion, while also being able to tune in weaker FM signals with little to no noise.

Other onboard features support upgraded stereo blending, a ‘softmute’ capability for lower quality stations, a ‘highcut’ to reduce high-frequency content, and radio broadcast data system (RBDS) to display station and music info. With 20 or more preset AM/FM stations, there is also an adjustable seek function.

A pair of 60dB output meters show the signal level from the analog outputs of each channel, while volume is controlled by preamp, integrated amp, or other control device. The MR89’s black glass front panel, meters, knobs, and brushed aluminum end caps are housed in a stainless-steel chassis with polished mirror finish.  The tuner can be paired with amplifiers, turntables, CD players, home theater processors, room correction devices, speakers, and other source components.
