Little Women 1949 on blu-ray (1 Viewer)

I’m currently watching Mervyn LeRoy’s 1949 adaptation of Little Women on HBO and wondering if this is a new transfer possibly for a future Warner Archive blu-ray. The colors are absolutely glorious and there is no print damage that I can see...or is this from the DVD transfer? I have not seen the DVD, but I know it was supposedly a fantastic transfer. Anyone have any thoughts?

On a recent episode of the WAC podcast, George Feltenstein said said that the current HD master wasn't completed all that long ago, but it was done of an interpositive that has registration, dirt and colour breathing issues that aren't noticeable because it's so compressed, but doesn't "cut the mustard" for a WAC Blu-ray. They would have to reapproach that title, but as he says, there's always tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply! It was the first time I had sat and watched it all the way through and I LOVED it. It’s almost Meet Me in St. Louis in Little Women form without the music. We can hope and pray that maybe one day we’ll see a release!

Yeah, I bought the 1949 Little Women on iTunes, and I'm very happy with it. I know a Blu-ray from WA would be superior (Summer Stock certainly was when it came out on Blu-ray; considerably sharper and more vibrant than the iTunes HD transfer).

It is my favourite 'Litte Women' ahead of the earlier Katherine Hepburn vehicle. I'd love to see it on Blu ray. Least said about the modern version, the better ......

THE modern version? There were three versions created in just the last two years! Unless by "modern" version you mean the Lea Thompson version that was set in modern times.

The BBC showed this in HD a few years ago, & I thought it looked great, but the film is not really my cup of tea & I wouldn't buy a Blu-ray. Perhaps there should be a question mark on the title of this thread.

Something tells me that Anthony is referring to last year’s adaptation from Greta Gerwig with Saorise Ronan as Jo. I haven’t seen this particular adaptation yet, but I liked the Katharine Hepburn version and have become quite fond of the Winona Ryder version.

Yes, it was the Greta Gerwig version I was referring to. I like the Hepburn version but prefer the one with LIz. The Greta Gerwig really annoyed me with its unecessary zooming between present , past, back to present, back to past till I had time vertigo..

I compared my LITTLE WOMEN HD on iTunes and HBOMAX . I am not sure why but the HBOMAX LITTLE WOMEN is better than iTunes HD.

Agreed. For a while I was friends with Winona Ryder who.told me that despite criticism from her friends, she preferred that version too. This was while she was making the version she did of the film. There was a point where Kate Hepburn was asked to p!ay Aunt March, she told me,but ultimately it was the marvelous Mary Wickes who played it.
