If Santa could transfer any film to 4K which 10 would you like him to place under your tree?

CLEOPATRA—SOUND OF MUSIC—MY FAIR LADY—PATTON—WEST SIDE STORY—WIND AND THE LION—DOCTOR DOLITTLE –HELLO DOLLY–KINGDOM OF HEAVEN—LAWRENCE OF ARABIA—-THELMA AND LOUISE. Since Disney owns most of these films I'm a bit worried.

If you expect 4K discs then you should be worried. However, if you stream then you might get rewarded with some of those titles on Disney+

  2. Matt Hough

Oklahoma! The King and I, Flower Drum Song, The Sound of Music, The Music Man, West Side Story, Gypsy, Star!, (and from the non-widescreen era) The Pirate, Singin' in the Rain.

    Yep, all musicals.

    SOUTH PACIFIC

  3. Skatetown USA (1979)
    Casablanca (1942)
    South Pacific (1958)
    The Time Machine (1960 & 2002)

    The Parent Trap (1961 & 1998)
    Boeing Boeing (1965)
    Thank God It’s Friday (1978)

The Complete Star Trek Collection (Original Timeline), especially
    Star Trek TMP-DC (1979)
    Star Trek II TWOK (1982)
    Star Trek III TSFS (1984)
    Star Trek, Generations (1994)
    Star Trek, First Contact (1996)

Three Men And A Baby (1987)
    James Bond Collection (19622002)

OK, thats more than 10 but I’m grouping my Star Trek & James Bond sets as one each. I did not include any of my Star Wars or BTTF favs because they are already on their way to UHD Blu-ray.

  4. The Last Valley, The Big Fisherman, Barabbas, Cheyenne Autumn, Lord Jim, El Cid, Fall Of The Roman Empire, Tempest, The Story Of Ruth.

EDIT: OliverK's post no 10 has reminded me of Raintree County and Richard V's post no 11 has reminded me of The Alamo. I shouldn't have needed reminding. I must be getting old

  5. Hello Santa. I've been a good boy this year, not through choice, I just don't have the energy to be anything else these days. To be honest I don't have the 4K kit yet, but here's ten already released films that could really do with a redo from the original negatives, which I understand they'd have to do for proper 4K release:

    Bend Of The River (1952)
    The Searchers (1956)
    Rio Bravo (1959)
    The Longest Day (1962)
    Mutiny On The Bounty (1962)
The Fall Of The Roman Empire (1964)
    The Wild Bunch (1969)
    Where Eagles Dare (1969)
    The Three Musketeers (1973)
    The Four Musketeers (1974)

    Thank you.

  6. These 10 would need some and often even a lot of work but they would look spectacular:

The Fall of the Roman Empire
    El Cid
    The Greatest Story Ever Told
    Cleopatra
    The Agony and the Ecstasy

    Raintree County
Around the World in 80 Days
The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm
    Barabbas
    Zulu

There are many others but I am keeping it to these 10 as per the thread title, thank you Santa!

Honorable mention to these classics that do NOT need that much work so I do not have to ask Santa to place them under my tree. The studios should be perfectly capable of giving them to us without too much of an effort, it is just a matter of going:

    Lawrence of Arabia
    Ben-Hur
    Spartacus
    My Fair Lady
    Patton

    Hello, Dolly!
    The Sound of Music
    Oklahoma!
    North By Northwest
    Vertigo

    To Catch a Thief
    Dr. Dolittle
    How the West Was Won
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World
    West Side Story

  7. The Alamo,
    The Great Escape
    The Sand Pebbles,
    Ben Hur,
    Patton,
    Kelly's Heroes,
    The Dirty Dozen,
    The Godfather,
    The Shootist,
    55 Days at Peking,
    El Cid,
    The Ten Commandments,
The War of the Worlds (original),
    The Time Machine (1960)
    Spartacus
    Cleopatra,

  8. The Court Jester
    The Pajama Game
    Land of the Pharaohs
    Darling Lili (Complete Version)
The King and I (color corrected)
    Carousel
    Isadora
The Tales of Hoffmann (UK Blu still not complete)
    The Devils
    War of the Worlds (1953)

  9. Sign me up for:
    Spartacus
    Fall of the Roman Empire
    El Cid
    The Big Fisherman
    Land of the Pharaohs
    The Story of Ruth
    Raintree County
    The Silver Chalice
    The Egyptian
    Barabbas

Would have listed Ben-Hur but it's the one that will make 4K.

  10. Can I bargain with Santa and just ask for all the MGM Tex Avery cartoons in one glorious boxed set?

    NO?

    If not:

    TOP HAT
THE GANGS ALL HERE (done correctly)
    FANTASIA
    MY FAIR LADY
    SINGIN IN THE RAIN
    THE BAND WAGON
    REAR WINDOW

  11. I'm going to interpret the question as which ten films would I like to see mastered in 4K and then released onto standard blu-ray. Anyway, in no particular order and pretty much off of the top of my head:
    1. Margie (1946)
    2. Captain Blood (1935)
    3. Gentleman Jim (1942)
    4. The Happiest Millionaire (1967)
    5. Beau James (1957)
    6. The Seven Little Foys (1955)
    7. The Wedding March (1928)
    8. The Laurel and Hardy silents
    9. The rest of the Thin Man series
    10. The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again

Yes, I know that I'm cheating a little on the last three entries. 😉

  12. Some common titles….
    Spartacus
    Ben-Hur 1959
    Lawrence of Arabia
    My Fair Lady
The Sand Pebbles…restored original release. Disney..wishful thinking
The Greatest Story Ever Told. Original release 221 minutes
    El Cid
Ken Russell's The Music Lovers. Original Roadshow release
    Cleopatra. 1963
    West Side Story 1961
And an 11th request since most of these though deserving will not get a release…The Sound of Music.

  13. Charlie Chan Carries On
    Charlie Chan's Chance
    Charlie Chan's Greatest Case
    Charlie Chan's Courage
    Charlie Chan in London
    Charlie Chan in Paris
    Charlie Chan in Egypt
    The Court Jester
    Roman Holiday
    The Lady Eve

    No HDR please.

  14. Well, with the caveat that my current setup doesn't support 4K. If, or more likely, when I do upgrade it would be nice to have these titles ready for me.

    The English Patient
    Chariots of Fire
    The Big Country
    Raging Bull
    The Deer Hunter
    Days of Heaven
    Black Narcissus
    Hud
    A Clockwork Orange
    In the Mood for Love

    – Walter.

  15. Nice to see lots of large format titles in this thread that should really shine in 4k.
It is a shame that so many of them do not even have a good Blu-ray.

The Deer Hunter is already out in 4k UHD so you got one more wish 😉

    Playtime – Criterion

Lawrence, this year. Dolly! next year. The Sound of Music, the year after that, and then My Fair Lady, Gone With the Wind, Driving Miss Daisy, The Great Escape, The Guns of Navarone, and, finally, The Godfather and original Star Wars trilogies.

    6. Raintree County
    7. Raintree County
    8. Raintree County
    9. Raintree County
    10. Raintree County

    😉

Okay, here's my real list… I tried to select films I'd truly love to own that I feel would really benefit from 4K. I only came up with 8.

    1. Raintree County
    2. Cleopatra
    3. The Sound of Music
    4. My Fair Lady
    5. Ben-Hur
    6. Downton Abbey (the film; the 4K looks great on iTunes)
    7. Sleeping Beauty
    8. Vertigo

  20. Since I just took the 4k plunge last night since I wanted a second TV for my workout/spare room and a new receiver for the main viewing room (and the projector will be the next thing to replace):

    A Star is Born (1954)
    Auntie Mame
    Sleeping Beauty
    My Fair Lady
    Oliver!
    Hello, Dolly!
Bedknobs and Broomsticks (139-minute uncut-ish version)
    Blazing Saddles

I just bought an LG FOR 99.00 at Best Buy.

  22. Aliens
Star Wars: A New Hope (unaltered)
    The Empire Strikes Back (unaltered)
    Return Of The Jedi (unaltered)

    Arsenic And Old Lace
    Lone Star

  23. Abbott and Costello in Hollywood
    Blondie Brings Up Baby
    Charlie Chan Carries On

    Marnie
    Vertigo
    The Birds
    The Trouble With Harry
    North By Northwest
    Planet Of The Apes (1968)
    Patton
    The Time Machine (1960)
    The Great Escape
Gun Fight At The Ok Corral

All need to be done properly though. Give them all the same treatment & end results as 4K 2001, The Shining or The Wizard Of Oz! Then press those 4K discs & watch the steady income stream over many years to come as more & more people discover 4K discs are way better than 4K streams !!!

  26. The Adventures of Robin Hood
    The Palm Beach Story
    The Band Wagon
    The Music Man
    Desk Set
    The King And I
    The Red Shoes
    The Sound Of Music
    The Searchers
    Singing in the Rain

  27. 1. A STAR IS BORN (1937)
    2. Most of French classics, pre-1959
    3. DINNER AT EIGHT (1933)
    4. SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN
    4. CASABLANCA
    5. GONE WITH THE WIND
    6. BIG FISH (2003)
    7. RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
    8. LEGENDS OF THE FALL
    9. TITANIC
    .
    .
    .
I realize most of those werent even made for 4K so i’ll just keep begging for at least a BD for the ones that still didnt make it. But i only want 4K if its done right, no idiotic revisionism, none whatsoever. I’d rather have a good BD, than a bad 4K BD ruined by HDR and whatnot.

  28. Interesting that The Godfather and Gone with the Wind keep popping up, as you have Robert Harris on record saying that 4K would provide no benefit to those titles, and they shouldn't be released on the format.

GWTW is my favourite film, but that's why I didn't add it to my list.

  30. The UNCUT SOUTH PACIFIC, SOUND OF MUSIC, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925), GONE WITH THE WIND, UNCUT ALAMO (1960), YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, SOMEWHERE IN TIME, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

  31. Logan’s Run
    The Towering Inferno
    Jaws
    The Empire Strikes Back
    The Thing (1982)
    Superman 2
    The Sting
    The Omega Man
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
…wanting all the Star Trek films seem popular…so I will also echo that sentiment.

  32. I'm excluding films that are already available to stream in 4K (which disqualifies the Star Wars films, Heat, Lawrence, Chinatown, Wrath of Khan, etc.)

Lord of the Rings Trilogy (albeit remastered/recolored/re-composited from a new true 4K DI)
    The Thing
    Minority Report
    The Master
    Vertigo
    Se7en
    Spartacus
    West Side Story

  33. 1. Star Wars Trilogy (1977, 1980 ESB, 1983 ROTJ Original Theatrical)
    2. My Fair Lady (1964)
    3. Lord of the Rings Trilogy
    4. True Lies (1994)
    5. Aliens (1986)
    6. Open Range (2003)
    7. Crimson Tide (1995)
    8. Platoon (1986)
    9. Full Metal Jacket (1987)
    10. The Abyss (1989)

  34. Worth

You have to remember that these are being delivered by Santa Claus.

Oh, and The Devils. But that's never going to happen.

    Runners up:

    The Abyss
    True Lies
    Titanic
    Indiana Jones
    Baraka / Samsara
    Sleeping Beauty

Samsara and West Side Story are available for 4k streaming on itunes, too but then a UHD disc would be much nicer.

  36. The Sound of Music
    Mary Poppins
    The Ten Commandments
    Ben Hur
    Hello Dolly!
    Flower Drum Song
    Thoroughly Modern Millie
    The King and I
    The Pirates of Penzance
    Twister
