Sometimes DVD’s or Blu-rays that were universally criticized are corrected and reissued, as happened with PATTON, GLADIATOR, SPARTACUS and GANGS OF NEW YORK. And sometimes one might not even have heard of the upgrade. I am wondering if Marcel Carnes’ CHILDREN OF PARADISE was ever released with a transfer improved from the original and controversial Blu-ray? Criterion did go back to reissue YOJIMBO after many complaints, and I wonder if that might have happened with the one and just slipped by me. Anyone?

The quality of the video presentation is significantly improved on the 2015 version of Spartacus, but the actual film content is identical.

There have been no material changes since 1991. Only new scans.

Blu-ray.com review of the disc says "Traces of moderate to very heavy filtering corrections are easily noticeable throughout the entire film and detail and clarity are seriously compromised".

Are you talking about actual DNR, or blocking in the blacker than black region that they've been criticized for other times.
Actual DNR. No grain and real detail obscured.
Purportedly "restored," I was looking forward to bathing in this film's glow.

It didn't happen.

The image is so drained of grain, that I'm not certain what to make of it.

Somewhere along the great, long line of digital restorative powers, someone, somewhere, turned something, that should not have been turned.

Basically Pathe did their own 4k scan in 2011. The restoration company did their own agressive grain management on the transfer. Pathe seems perfevtly fine with the subsequent bad restoration job and Criterion is contractually obligated to release what Pathe gave them. So to return to the original question, the answer is obviously

The dvd was misframed. Apples and oranges though since Criterion actually did that transfer.

I could have sworn there was an earlier Blu of YOJIMBO (from Criterion) that had artifacting problems. Just a sub-par release. But they did get around to remastering it in any case. Now, Criterion, PLEASE DO THE SAME FOR CHILDREN OF PARADISE!

Yojimbo was released on Blu back in 2010 with spine #52.

Yes, thank you. I own the Blu, but it just gnaws at me that I'm so sure it was released on Blu earlier and had PQ issues. Guess it's just the old dementia, eh?
