The Movie

Plastic surgeon Danny Macabee (Adam Sandler) is a loser when it comes to love. After having his heart broken, Danny learns inadvertently that pretending to be married is his golden ticket to one night stands with beautiful women with no strings attached. Danny’s lies catch up with him when he meets Palmer (Brooklyn Decker), who may be the girl of his dreams. Danny’s finds himself gradually forced to cover up his earlier lies with more audacious stories. Danny enlists his assistant Katherine (Jennifer Aniston) and then Jennifer’s children (Bailee Madison & Griffin Gluck) to portray his ex-wife and children to maintain appearances with Palmer. A trip to Hawaii with his girlfriend and his pretend wife and children creates even more complications when Katherine’s arch-enemy from school days, Devlin (Nicole Kidman), shows up and the two women begin a contest in one-upmanship.

Just Go With It was originally titled Pretend Wife in production and is based loosely upon I.A.L. Diamond’s screenplay for Cactus Flower(1969) and the stage plays by Abe Burrows and Barillet & Gredy that inspired the earlier film. This is not the first time that Sandler has remade earlier films (Deeds, The Longest Yard) but the strengths of the earlier film provide a solid structure here for the screenplay to have additional jokes and gags heaped in for the updated film. Frequent Sandler players Nick Swardson and Kevin Nealon also appear in the film, which was directed by Dennis Dugan, also a veteran of many Sandler films(Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore).

The title Just Go With It refers to the players’ mantra in the film to keep their improv going as more lies are created to maintain consistency with earlier falsehoods. Just Go With It assembles a great cast of actors with enough amusements mixed in with the location shooting in Wailea, Maui, to create an amusing farce with its fair share of verbal barbs and sight gags.

Video

The movie is in 1080p high definition in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The picture quality is excellent on this Blu-ray release. Colors are vibrant and flesh tones tend to the warmer end of the spectrum which is aesthetically pleasing for the tropical background in the bulk of the film. Film grain is minimal to non-existent but fine detail is excellent, suggesting that any DNR and edge enhancement have been applied minimally if at all. This is overall an excellent transfer from film.

Audio

The English 5.1 DTS-HD MA tracks are more than adequate. There is some good directional audio in a couple of scenes but most of the audio emanates from front and center speakers. If this is not an exceptional audio experience, it can also be said that it suffers from no apparent flaws either. The audio is better than average even if it does not approach reference quality.

Special Features

This Blu-ray DVD Combo includes comprehensive special features. All of the special features on the Blu-ray disc are provided in 1080p high definition. The following special features are included on both the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film:

Feature length commentary by actors Adam Sandler and Nick Swardson, and producers Allen Covert, Tim Herlihy, and Steve Koren: The participants actually seem to be enjoying this commentary and that quality is infectious to the viewer in creating an entertaining and fun commentary.

Feature length commentary by director Dennis Dugan: Dugan is also a former actor (Petticoat Junction) and he is a good storyteller which makes this commentary much more than it would be with less loquacious directors.

Laughter Is Contagious(4:39): This is a brief blooper reel that does not overstay its welcome.

The Perfect Couple: Jen and Adam(5:51): This featurette has Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston talking about working together on the film.

Dolph - Not The One From Rocky IV(6:11): Nick Swardson talks about his role in the film along with behind the scenes footage.

Shooting Hawaii(5:35): The cast and crew talk about the challenges and delights of filming in Hawaii.

The remaining special features are included only on the Blu-ray version:

Deleted Scenes(16:57): There are some deleted scenes included on the DVD version but the Blu-ray includes approximately 11 minutes more of footage of extended and deleted scenes.

Adon: Living Plastic(2:30): This featurette includes footage of Kevin Nealon in full makeup approaching strangers in character with hidden video cameras.

Along Came A Prop Guy(2:53): Footage of the prop man goofing with cast and crew on set with a fake spider.

Decker’s Got Gas(2:19): Swimsuit model Decker plays a practical joke on her director and leading man while cameras roll.

Kevin Nealon: The Plastic Man(5:31): Featurette showing the makeup application process for Nealon’s plastic surgery-scarred character.

What’s A Dugan?(5:27): Director Dugan talks about making the film while goofing around for the cameras.

Look Who Else Is In The Movie(2:40): Featurette highlighting cameos by Nealon and others.

Sneaky Kiki & Bart The Water Fart(2:40): Child actors Bailee Madison and Griffin Gluck are interviewed about making the film.

The Not So Perfect Couple(3:52): Nicole Kidman and Dave Mathews are interviewed about their roles in the film.

Decker’s First Role(4:20): Decker and other cast and crew talk about her first leading role in a film.

Grand Wailea Promo(7:08): This is a high-def promo with the sights and sounds of Wailea, Hawaii.

Trailers for Battle: Los Angeles and The Green Hornet appear by default after the disc is loaded and prior to the main menu. All of the following trailers are accessible from the special features menu:

Battle: Los Angeles (2:34)

The Green Hornet (2:38)

Elektra Luxx (1:59)

Beastly (2:30)

Barney’s Version (2:19)

Grown Ups (1:35)

50 First Dates (2:31)

Click (2:05)

BD Live Blu Ray players connected to the internet can access the movieIQ+sync feature, which presents information about the cast, crew, production, and music during the movie via a pop-up window. The window takes up about one-third of the screen and the trivia will be of little interest to most viewers. This feature might be fun if you are playing the film at a party but is otherwise intrusive if you desire to concentrate on the film.

Conclusion

Just Go With It is a fun and amusing Adam Sandler film with a terrific cast of actors and great background scenery to boot. The participants give the impression, in the special features and in the film itself, that they had a great time making the film. The video quality of the Blu-ray disc is excellent. The audio is merely average or perhaps better than average since there are no apparent flaws. The special features are comprehensively better than average, since most of these special features actually entertain instead of being a chore to watch. The special features are recommended viewing for everyone who enjoyed the film. Just Go With It is recommended to anyone looking for a pleasant diversion or a fun popcorn film.

Adam Sandler is hit or miss with me. This sounds like one of the Sandler movies I would like so I'll have to check it out. Thanks Tim!
