French audio brand Focal has unveiled a new set of reference headphones, the ‘Clear Mg’. Replacing the former ‘Clear’ headphones as the company’s reference open-backed cans, the Mg will provide even “sharper” audio than its predecessor, while the price remains at $1,490.

The company says that the new product is the result of four years of R&D, with a new ‘M’-shaped magnesium dome created for the Mg’s speaker drivers. This promises to provide more “lightness, rigidity and damping” in performance and enabling a more realistic sound. A light and flexible surround should deliver greater precision and impact, while an impedance of 55 ohms means the headphones can be used with a portable audio player.

Focal places emphasis on luxury and listening comfort, and the Clear Mg sports a solid aluminum yoke to mold to the face with a leather- and microfiber-covered headband, allowing for a constant curve during head turns. There are also perforated microfiber earpads. The outside of the earpads includes a honeycomb pattern with a newly conceived chestnut and mixed-metals finish to blend classic and modern looks.

A new grille combined with the honeycomb ‘M’-shaped design “more closely” follows the curves of the driver and allows for a wider soundstage, while the reduced space between the driver and grille enables more precise high-frequency reproduction. Focal has designed a carrying case woven in colors to match the headphones.
