Focal announces first ever Bluetooth and ANC headphones

Focal has unveiled the new Bathys, the company’s first wireless headphones with active noise cancellation and hi-fi sound. Priced at $799 and available this month, the new cans use 5.1 Bluetooth multipoint or wired connection, care of a USB-DAC mode offering up to 24 bit/192 kHz resolution. Focal says the drivers are French-made, and the set offers 30-plus hours of battery life, high-grade materials and several “attractive” features.

With a “detailed, precise and dynamic sound”, Bathys includes noise-canceling modes: ‘silent’ for journeys with high background noise, and ‘soft’ for home or the office. A ‘transparency’ mode allows perception of outside sounds when required. As well as Alexa and Google Assistant voice assistants, there is an adjustable EQ feature and settings can be controlled from a dedicated Focal app. Compatible codecs include SBC, AAC, Apt-X and Apt-X Adaptive, and a ‘clear voice capture’ microphone facilitates super-clear phone conversations.

A fast-charging function allows five extra listening hours from 15 minutes, and a 4 ft (1.2m) 3.5 mm jack and 4ft (1.2m) USBC are supplied with the package. An aluminum/magnesium dome driver design can deliver “deep bass, soft trebles and a clear mid-range” and the open- and closed-back design is one of Focal’s signature performance aesthetics. Real headband leather and the aluminum construction ensure comfort for all head shapes. A Focal flame symbol sits at the center of the earcup which can be optionally backlit. A stylish carrying case is supplied with the headphones.

Focal says the Bathys name comes from the word ‘bathyscaphe’, the first submarine exploration vehicle. The original vessel inspires a sense of “calm, depth and absolute silence”. For more information on the new Bathys ANC headphones go to this link.
