Marine fighter squadron VMF 247 is in the thick of it on Guadalcanal. The airstrip they hold is hammered by offshore batteries. Malaria and combat fatigue grip the men. Fuel is low and replacement parts are few. The only things not in short supply are the enemy…and Major Don Kirby’s determination to keep fighting with whatever he has. John Wayne is in the cockpit and in command as Kirby, a leader at odds with his executive officer (Robert Ryan) and at the forefront of tacticians eager to coordinate ground combat with low-flying aerial sorties. Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without a Cause) directs, skillfully incorporating actual battlefield and dogfight footage. Flying Leathernecks has the flight stuff!

I watched this on HBO Max and it looks tremendous so WA did a great job with this Technicolor movie. A first day purchase for me with my favorite actor John Wayne supported by another favorite actor of mine, the underrated Robert Ryan.
I take it you would recommend this as a blind purchase then.

Seems like at least two Archive titles have leaked out on Amazon prior to Tuesday or Thursday's announcement.

Most definitely a recommended movie. If you like the "The Flying Tigers" another WWII movie about pilots starring John Wayne then you should like this one even more so as it's a better movie.

As to leaking out, it's really strange so we should get the rest of the announcements this week. I think the movies I mentioned here are coming out with some Robert Redford, Hugh Jackman, Burt Lancaster and perhaps Wesley Snipes.

What a wonderful surprise, love this film! The movie was originally slated to be a Korea war film, but for whatever reason, was changed to a WWII film. Needless to say, I can’t wait to get this in hi def!

Just another RKO Warner Archive release derived from original nitrate camera negatives.
Ah, yes. So ho-hum. Mr. Harris, maybe you should talk to them and request a bit of misalignment, just to keep things interesting.

It sure looks like it because I never, ever thought "Flying Leathernecks" to look this good on home video.
It never looked very good in 16mm either. I'm really surprised to hear the original 35mm nitrate negative has survived.

Ahhh, thou mocketh! These perfect WA releases are a blight upon civilization, and will put an end to home theater reviews and reviewers. There will be nothing further to discuss.

Give me some nice misregistration anytime.

HTF staff will be living out of large home appliance cartons, with windows for ventilation, and no indoor plumbing.

It‘s a return to quadrupidism.

Mark my words.

If Warner Archive continues on their march of perfection, it could be the end of civilization.

Mr. Harris, do you mean quadrupedal-ism, as in Zebras? I'm assuming your intention is that the discs coming from Warner Archive are so astounding it makes one go on all fours in front of one's screen in sheer amazement. I guess this could possibly affect evolution in a backward manner, if left unchecked. Then again, maybe this surfeit of perfection will allow us to talk more about the movies themselves; their merits and demerits, felicities and not-so-niceties, aesthetic wherewithal's and mysterious confluences.

Pre ordered thru the HTF link! Of course, love Duke’s performance in this film, but Robert Ryan is awesome as well. Love his telling Duke “A man 300 years ago said it better than I ever could...No Man Is Island!”

It’s actually quite good for the back.

As to spelling...

”We don’t need no stinking spelling...”
