Emotiva Announces S12 and S15 Airmotiv Subwoofers

More subwoofer news, this time from Emotiva. The Tennessee-based boffins, renowned for their bang-for-buck deals on loudspeakers and electronics, have announced the availability of two new Airmotiv subwoofers, the 12” Airmotiv S12 and 15” Airmotiv S15. The two new models will join the 10” Airmotiv S10, rounding out a line of subwoofers by the company that promise to reproduce the ‘lowest frequencies with low distortion.’

Similar to the S10, both of the new Emotiva Audio Airmotiv subwoofers employ a downward firing design with a high-excursion passive radiator and high-output amplifiers. The cabinets themselves are constructed of heavily braced, acoustically inert HDF (high-density fiberboard), with integral shock absorbing feet and removable grilles.

Airmotiv subwoofer drivers use non-pressed treated paper cones, reinforced with aramid fibers, for extra rigidity and internal acoustic damping. The active driver features a motor assembly with a double-stacked ferrite magnet, and a 3” heavy-duty solid copper voice coil. Forced air cooling, a vented pole piece, and vents placed under the spider promise to ‘add up to hours of extended use under demanding conditions.’ Front bezels are finished with multiple coats of black lacquer, and the sides and rear are covered in durable, textured vinyl.

“The Airmotiv speaker series is our response to anyone who thinks audiophile-grade sonics and rugged construction are only available at unnecessarily high prices,” said Dan Laufman, President and CEO, Emotiva Audio Corp. “But if I say so myself, we outdid ourselves with the new Airmotiv subs, especially the S15. Nothing in their price class comes remotely close to the level of accuracy and refinement achieved by these subwoofers.”

At the top of the range, the Airmotiv S15 (SRP: $1,199.00), promises to blend technical performance with ‘tremendous’ bass output in a sub that is capable of ‘shaking the rafters while exposing subtle nuances’ of the lowest frequencies in acoustic music. It includes a 650 Watt RMS Class D amplifier with current MOSFET technology, and a linear power supply with a toroidal power transformer. A multi-stage limiter protects against power overloads and ensures distortion is kept to the absolute bare minimum.

The 12” Airmotiv S12 (SRP: $799.00) provides a more affordable option with its 500 Watt capability and is designed to complement home theaters, or as an ingredient in a 2.1-channel system.
