At the risk of starting this topic a little early, I thought I would ask what other forum members rank as their top 10 favorite 2001 releases (most impressive transfers) as well as 5 major disappointments.

I thought this was a monumental year for highly anticipated epic and classic releases. As my list will show, that is my major emphasis. Newer box office releases don't impress me as much as older titles that go through some sort of restoration, though there have been so many outstanding new titles that are reference quality, I'm sure most of you will have them on your list. Of the newer box office releases I chose Planet of the Apes 2001 as the most impressive. I liked this movie more than I thought I would, but was mostly blown away by the quality of the transfer and has now replaced Gladiator as my demo disc.

For what it's worth here is my list-

    1. Citizen Kane (Warner)

    2. Written On The Wind (Criterion)

    3. Funny Girl (Columbia)

    4. Planet of the Apes 2001 (Fox)

    5. Now Voyager (Warner)

    6. Marilyn Monroe Diamond Collection (Fox)

    8. Rebecca (Criterion)

    9. Snow White (Disney)

    10.Doctor Zhivago (Warner)

    Major disappointments-

    1. Some like it Hot (MGM)

    2. The Apartment (MGM)

    3. Notorious (Criterion)- I know I will probably take some heat for this. The film elements used look great, just the transfer looked bad to me. I think it has something to do with the amount of disc space they used for the film and the amount of bonus material they crowded on one disc. Rebecca used 2 discs, they should have done the same for Notorious. I notice that the second half of the film improves in it's video quality, is quite beautiful, the first half suffers though.

    4. Funny Face (Paramount)

    5. White Christmas (Paramount)-ok this was a late 2000 release but I still haven't got over the disappointment of how bad this looks.

    10 best:

    Citizen Kane

    Snow White

    Doctor Zhivago

    Superman: The Movie

    Lawrence of Arabia

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

    Ben-Hur

    Kino's Buster Keaton box set

Shrek (Subtitles for the commentary: nice touch!)

O Brother Where Art Thou (The video/audio is flawless!)

    5 most dissapointing:

It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World (No overture, red tinted credits, no UA logo, and not the complete cut! BAD MGM!)

The Robe (Geez, nice release for the first CinemaScope movie, Fox...)

Airplane! (Why no deleted scenes, Paramount? You had a great transfer and commentary, so why not make it an SE?)

A Hard Day's Night (Supposed to be released in March, we're still waiting for it, Miramax!)

The reason for only 4 episodes on DVD per year is for 2 reasons:

The rights work for the episodes is really messy and Rhino isn't a high-profile studio. IMO, Best Brains should have Anchor Bay do DVD's. They're more capable of a higher amount of episodes per year (Most of the DVD's are of public domain movies)

5 DVDs that I bought and was sorta disapointed with:
Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives (cut up and no features)
Apocalypse Now Redux (I love owning this DVD but was disapointed that it had no features)
2001 box set (I love owning this DVD but they actually took OUT the Special features from the original release i.e: I wanted more)
Transformers Heroes/Villians set (I still have yet to replace my copy)
I can't really think of another one/I'm too lazy

    Rain,
CDA = Creative Design Art. They are the company that puts out the huge boxsets (Enter the Dragon, Jurassic Park/Lost World Deluxe Edition, The Time Machine, etc.) and have recently put out the silver "book-like" sets out of 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and Full Metal Jacket.
I was wondering if you had a chance to check out the two.
    2001
Jack Biggs may be able to answer this too.
