    Good day all...
I have been tasked with putting together a budget HT setup for my parents and I'm having difficulty deciding on an A/V receiver.

The only requirements that I'm looking for are:
    • Under $400.00 price tag (non-negotiable money cap)
    • Component Video Switching
    • Solid movie surround sound performance

    Short list:
    • Harman Kardon AV230 $379.99 (shipped from J+R) $333.00 for a refurbished unit (shipped from hk online store)
    • onkyo TX-SR502 $249.99 (shipped from J+R)
    • Onkyo TX-SR601 $349.99 (shipped from J+R)

I believe all three recievers are good values but ofcourse looking for the best our money can buy, so your opinions/experiences are welcomed.

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Brian,
You can't go wrong with any of those. I would also add the Yamaha RX-V640 and the Denon AVR-1804 to that list.

    Good Luck, Al. Wise

I would say they are both nice choices but I opt. the HK AVR-230 just because I think HK is a more quality product than the Onkyo.

    Thanks, I apprecaite the replies.

I have a HK 310 and really like it, so I'm kinda partial to the HK line myself.

I have the HK 230 in my system and could not be happier with it. Don't let the low wattage specs fool you. HK is very honest and pessimistic in their power specs. 50 HK watts may be as good as 75-125 'other folks' watts.

My room is pretty large and I am running 5 Axiom M22ti's. I have met several of my neighbors (not happily) but have not come close to clipping the HK.

OTOH, the HK remote sucks. Count on some tutorial time with your users or get a quality universal remote.
