I would put A Clockwork Orange on there, but I just don't think of it as sci-fi.

6. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

I left out the Star Wars movies and E.T. because I find them to be more fantasy than sci-fi. I also left out comic book adaptations, as they would monopolize the list.

Not in order of any kind...

12 Monkeys
Dark City
Blade Runner
Brazil
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Alien
The Incredible Shrinking Man
The Matrix
The Fly
(1986)
The Terminator

Other than Alien, I tried to avoid the "action movie/adventure yarn/horror flick with an outer space setting automatically equals science fiction" idea. It's a controversial topic I know ;) but I simply do NOT see Star Wars as "science fiction". And please don't think I'm being contrary by not including Kubrick's 2001. I think it's an excellent and visionary film...but it's not really one of my "favorites".

I'm hard pressed to think of twenty films that even qualify as genuine "science fiction" in the first place. But if I were to rank the best SF films ever made, they would be ...

10) Metropolis (Lang)

9) "Demon with a Glass Hand" (the Hugo Award-winning Harlan Ellison-scripted episode from ABC-TV's superb series, The Outer Limits)

8) Dark City

7) Fahrenheit 451

6) Solaris (Tarkovsky)

5) Blade Runner

4) The Day the Earth Stood Still

3) Forbidden Planet

2) Zardoz

1) that little Stanley Kubrick film with all the monkeys and the talking computer
