Hmm... this year, I ended up with giving 18 films a grade of B, 3 films a grade of B+, and one film a grade of A-.

So, the film I gave an A- was also the one I enjoyed the most this year:

Avatar - rewards multiple viewings, go see it in IMAX-3D!

These got a grade of B+ from me:

Star Trek - if only it had a better antagonist
Up! - solid film, but not crazy about the mid-section
The Hurt Locker - super-tense

Of all the films I gave a grade of B to this year, I'd most likely re-watch these 6 films:

The Fantastic Mr. Fox - Wes Anderson finally finds his calling.
Where the Wild Ones Are - Spike Jonze really nails this one.
Black Dynamite - so much fun poking more fun with the genre.
The Hangover - so much fun throughout its running time.
Zombieland - best cameo this year, hilarious in execution.
500 Days of Summer - bittersweet without being sappish

The rest of the films with a grade of B:

Taken, I Love You Man, Sunshine Cleaning, Adventureland, State of Play, District 9, Whip It, Precious, The Blind Side, Brothers, Invictus

Is this the 2009 "time to throw down?"

So far I've seen 83 2009 films.

1. Goodbye Solo
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. Ponyo
4. The Hurt Locker
5. The Cove
6. The Fantastic Mr. Fox
7. Avatar
8. A Serious Man
9. Sugar
10. Up

Haven't seen yet: Broken Embraces, Bright Star, In the Loop, White Ribbon, Taking Woodstock, Moon, The Messenger, The Maid, Food Inc., Crazy Heart, Lorna's Silence, and probably more I'm forgetting or didn't know enough about.

At the moment. . . (going by U.S. non-festival release date, except Overheard which I saw at HIFF and appears not to have had a regular U.S. release)

1. Moon
2. The Hurt Locker
3. Overheard
4. (500) Days of Summer
5. Star Trek
6. Up in the Air
7. Sin Nombre
8. Jerichow
9. Sunshine Cleaning

I'm sure I can fill out the Top 10 and possibly drop some after seeing more films. 2009 was not a really strong crop of films (from those I've seen) -- I didn't give anything 4 stars, and only 3 films 3-1/2.

BTW, interesting we all have a different #1 so far.
