Just won an eBay auction for an excellent condition, used Nikon Z 14-30 f/4 (for ~$800 taxed+shipped) to come reasonably close to matching my desired FOV of the iPhone's ultrawide. Now, if only Nikon will finally come out w/ the Z7iii w/ desired updates so I can get 45MP-plus w/ that ultrawide...

That's an awesome lens. Much better than your 16-35. Honestly, what does the Z7ii need to be improved? Especially since you can get it for a nice price.

I get what you mean about the Z7ii being good enough, especially at that current marked down price.

I figured they can improve on the sensor like done for Z6iii as well as the EVF and maybe the AF I guess. Also, the video shooting could probably be better -- the Z6 series has always seemed a bit better than Z7 for video shooting.

But who knows? I just might cave by Spring when I will definitely want to shoot more again now that I have that 14-30 f/4 that could definitely use more MPs... plus even have a new MBP for on-the-go processing, which I lacked before, and expect to do more traveling going forward...

That would be the Z8. Seriously, what you just described is the Z8.

The Z7 is a photo camera that can do video. I suspect that is what it will always be.

Yeah, maybe I should just bite the bullet on the Z8 instead by this point, especially since it's been marked down to just $400 more than the Z7ii's original price, and any Z7iii will be at least $3K.

Truth is Nikon really might not see a point to a Z7iii and is now pricing the Z8 to be the Z7iii that many seem to want instead.

I will have to debate it some more and then probably pick one between those 2 come Spring.

I already just spent $2.8K on a MBP plus have the ultrawide that could definitely use a new body, so the Z8 at $3.4K probably isn't out of the question for me anymore... though I do sorta like the smaller, lighter body of Z7ii that's also more similar to my Z6 that I might use often enough in tandem, if the new body is small/lite enough...

FWIW, I did also just buy a new viola for ~$2K to replace the one I will probably never recover... I recently finally also started trying the cello, which I did recover after 3.5 years, but I definitely ain't lugging that w/ me (especially on top of a photo rig) anywhere unless I actually become all that good w/ it, LOL... And if my new love works out as hoped, I may actually finally end up moving out of NYC, have my own car and finally drive now and then, so it'll be a brave new world for me, my photography and my bits of fiddling, LOL....

After a lifetime in marketing, I really don't see Nikon doing what you hope with the Z7. The odd number bodies are still photo emphasis, and the even number ones are video emphasis, with the Z8 actually being excellent at both. The Z9 is it's own animal. A benefit of the Z8 is it uses the same battery as all the others except the Z9.

Bottom line, if you want a single, all solution body, that's the Z8. If you want two more specialized bodies, the Z6iii and Z7ii make the most sense. I have no interest in video, so I have the two still photo models. A Z5 converted to 590nm IR and the Z7ii.

Hmmm... any idea if Nikon might hike prices (or rescind the current price drops) on the Z8 (and/or Z7ii) sometime soon due to our tariffs situation?

I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't wait (another month or so) til early Spring to take my plunge... but I'd also like to wait a little to at least spread out my sudden splurge on gear (and my new MBP and NY Mets tickets plan, LOL)...

I would not expect prices to be lower than they are right now, at least for some time.

I wouldn't either, but was wondering if they might actually hike back up some due to the tariff situation... even though the expected tariffs aren't targeted directly at Japan (or Thailand? where most Z bodies are probably made nowadays)...

I was thinking to wait til mid-March or so to buy from B&H using my Payboo CC, which has mid-month statement end date (so it'd be charged in the next statement period instead)...

Still debating ever so slightly, but probably gonna take the plunge on a Z8 from B&H (in-store) in a couple days -- and also just got a $100 refund for unexpected price drop on my new MBP from B&H to boot to ease the pain a bit, heh...

Not sure what I'll be shooting during first couple weeks or so w/ a new 45MP body + my "new" 14-30 f/4, but will be down around Tilghman Island (in Maryland/Delaware) for a couple days at end of this month w/ my new GF before taking the scenic(?) route back thru Cape May (and the ferry), etc -- I've never been to those places before...

I picked up a 28mm pancake lens in the hope I might use my R62 more if I think it's going to be less of a physical burden. It's still hard to beat the convenience of my phone though.

I own this same lens, but purchased it mainly to use with my R10 as a light weight fast lens to pair with slower RF-S zoom lenses when I want to travel light. It's a little too wide for how I would use such a lens on my R62. I had a EF 40mm pancake lens for my 5D3 in my dSLR days which worked as a small walk around for me. Now I have a RF 50mm f/1.8 for the R62, which is pretty compact even without being a true pancake lens. I also have a RF 16mm f/2.8 prime that I use as a wide angle solution for the R62 instead of using a larger, more costly wide angle zoom.

I'm still thinking about an R10, mainly because I have access to some ef-s lenses and I haven't used my ef-rf adapter since upgrading to RF lenses. The R10 seems to offer the most balance between features and price for just wanting to tinker, but I would still be looking at refurb or quality used pricing.

I sold all my EF-S lenses several years ago, as well as my EF-M lenses along with the M50. I no longer have any camera body that supports them without using an adapter. I did buy two RF-S lenses for the R10 for light travel -- the 18-150mm as a kit with the R10, and later added the 10-18mm. The two zooms give me a versatile focal range, while the RF 28mm pancake gives me something faster for indoors if I need it. This replaced the entire M50 kit I used to have for light weight travel, plus the R10 serves double duty as a 2nd body to pair with the R62 when I want two bodies -- the R62 + RF 24-105L along with the R10 + RF 100-400 makes a nice landscape + wildlife combo.

Call me nutz, but I might go fer the new (medium "Pro" version) PD travel tripod on their new kickstarter... :P

I'd likely prefer the Pro Tall version in actual use, but it's really way too tall to stick in my PD backpack's side pocket -- even the shorter versions are probably stretching things a good deal likely sticking ~2-3" higher than the top of the backpack while adding maybe 1lb (vs my current TT+3rd party ballhead)...

Think I'll put it on my new travel CC once I figure out which one's best (for me) to get (and help reach the new CC's promo offer requirement), LOL...
