GAS, as in Gear Acquisition Syndrome, for camera stuff.

Finally the Sigma 50mm F/1.4 ART lens is now available for pre-order. I sold off my older Sigma 50mm lens last year in anticipation for this ART line version. I've missed not having a 50mm lens in my camera bag, more than I thought I would. I sold off the older version due to inconsistent AF for near and far field objects.

Maybe the Canon 135mm F/2.0 lens.

And a couple of Paul C. Buff Einsteins, Vagabond Mini, and some modifiers.

That new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens does look interesting, Patrick. The only turn off for me is the size -- it's even bigger than my Canon 50 f/1.2 L, which I already think is big and heavy for a 50mm prime. The 135 f/2 L is a terrific lens for the price. I think I paid about $830 new during a Canon triple rebate program when I combined it with my 5D3 purchase. I think they are going used for about that price.I have actually been selling more than buying for awhile. I just sold my 85 f/1.8 and 28 f/1.8 lenses, as I wasn't using those focal lengths after moving from a crop to full frame body. Previously I sold off my two crop-only lenses and a Canon 50 f/1.4. I am down to three prime lenses -- 50L, 135L, and 40mm f/2.8 pancake -- plus four zoom lenses -- 24-105L, 17-40L, 70-200 f/4 IS and 100-400L. I still have my crop 7D body, but only use it as a second body with the 100-400L for wildlife. The 5D3 gets used most of the time.I did just add a second, compact external flash for travel -- the Canon Speedlite 270EXII. My 430EXII is too big to pack when we travel, and this flash works well for fill flash applications and doesn't take up much room in the bag. I wanted something like this for our summer trip -- an Alaskan land/cruise combo for our 25th wedding anniversary. That and the 40mm pancake will make a nice light combo on the 5D3 when walking around the cruise ship.I may pick up one more Lee grad ND filter for my set before the trip. I only have hard edged GND's, so may pick up a .9 soft edge GND for some of the mountain shots.

Regarding the weight of the new S50ART, it's about the same weight as the 24-70mm F/2.8 MKII, which I thought was okay (rented it for Dragon Con in 2013), but the MKI version I sold off because it did feel heavier over the course of a day after 2 years of use, and it's about 130g more than the MKII version. Weird how that works, but the S50ART weighs almost 200g more than my S85 lens, so it'll still take a bit to get used to.

I sold off most of my Yongnuo YN-560 speedlites (manual), and upgraded to the Neewer TT850 manual flashes (mainly due to the spiiffy Li-On battery it uses, about 3 times the charge of 4 AA batteries). I have 3 of the TT850's, but might pick up one more, gang 3 of them, and use the other one for rim lighting. I'm crazy in that I shoot in manual mode with speedlites, usually off-camera (hand-held or on a pole), so I never use TTL mode anymore.

Part of the attraction for using primes over zooms for me is the prime is smaller and lighter than the corresponding f/2.8 zoom, so the new Sigma fails in this area for one of my desires. If Canon ever ends up redesigning their 50 f/1.4 and keeps it smaller -- like their 35 f/2 IS and 28 IS, I may sell my 50L for something like that. I usually do not shoot at f/1.2, anyway, as the depth of field is so narrow at that aperture on full frame. The current Canon f/1.4's non-USM auto focus is the main reason I ended up moving to the 50L (plus I found a good deal on the lens).

Since I shoot a lot wide-open, I live with the extra weight of my primes for that kind of "look" in my photos. Yup, suffering for one's art, is there nothing more blissfully painful (well, maybe child-birth, but that's never happening to me...)

Too bad nothing happening over there until after Passover. Adorama is also listing it for pre-order. I think either place will save me sales tax on the order, unlike Amazon nowadays.

I'm not sure Canon will release a Mark II version of the 7D. The 70D may be their answer. While I would love a 7D2, I'm not sure I would actually buy one, as my 7D only gets used 2-3 times a year when we travel and I take both bodies. A 7D2 will probably cost over $1,500, and that's pricey for something that will not get used much.. It would have to be a major improvement over the 7D. Maybe I'd eventually get one once the prices dropped or I could get a refurbished one on sale through the Canon store.

I would, but it creates a significant cascade of glass upgrades on top of the body purchase. First and foremost would be the 17-55mm f/2.8 EF-S. I would probably also want to trade out the 85mm f/1.8 for a 135mm. Hence my choice to be satisfied with what I have.

I simply sold off my 17-55mm and moved up to the S85, but never felt the big urge to go all the way to the 135L to replace what was missing with the 85mm on a crop, mainly due to already having the 70-200 IS F/4.

But don't mind me, I'm fairly impractical when it comes to succumbing to GAS. I may not be the best person to listen to when it comes to this wide-spanning topic.

I went through a revamping of my lenses after moving to full frame, so I know how you feel -- and I still have my 7D crop body. The EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS was the first to go, and then the EF-S 10-22 (replaced it with the 17-40L). I bought a 135L along with the full frame body because Adorama was doing a Canon triple rebate instead of the normal double rebate, so the price was too good to pass up. I hung onto my 28mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 primes for about 18 months before I finally let them go -- I only used the 28mm twice and never used the 85mm during that time.

I, uh, forgot to mention that I had ordered the (We swear it's not a NEX) A6000 a few months back and that arrived today. But I don't really consider that part of my photo gear. =p It's halfway between my iPhone and a DSLR, and will get most use at ballgames and theater events where I can't bring a full sized DSLR in. I'm ok if you wanna label me a hypocrite over it tho =)
