Senso is a strangely neglected masterpiece. I can only assume the sting in the tail maks it less of a crowd-pleaser, but the decor & choreography are superb, and it's extremely lush and romantic (in the widest sense).

Yes John, and Senso also has an incredibly filmed battle scene. I believe Senso was the first Italian film shot in Technicolor.

8 1/2 is on of the few canon movies that really got on my nerves. I have a hard time with anything by Fellini after La Dolce Vita, too much masturbation for my tastes. I love Nights of Cabiria and some of his other early work though.

Bicycle Thieves
Umberto D
Nights of Cabiria
Suspiria
Black Sunday (Bava)
La Dolce Vita
L’Avventura

That's short but I don't want to put movies I don't like enough, and I have yet to see the classics by Visconti, Bertolucci and Pasolini

Brook, it was the battle scene in particular i had in mind when i was talking of Visconti's choreography. There's another magnificent one (not huge scale) in The Leopard, which seems amazingly vivid and real, brings the period to life.

Took this sorted list out of my post (several months ago ... I've seen a lot of French films since then so I'll be making updates on all my lists on the eve of 12/31/2003) in the Personal Top 100 Foreign Language thread:

1. The Bicycle Thief (De Sica)
2. Blowup (Antonioni) - from UK/Italy ; this is my #2 Italian film if qualified
2/3. Umberto D. (De Sica)
3/4. Rocco & His Brothers (Visconti)
4/5. Open City (Rossellini)
5/6. La Notte (Antonioni)
6/7. 8 1/2 (Fellini)
7/8. La Dolce Vita (Fellini)
8/9. Le Notti di Cabiria (Fellini)
9/10. La Strada (Fellini)
10/11. Cinema Paradiso (Tornatore) ; excluded if Blowup is qualified
