What an unconventional way to make a Beatles musical; about as 180 degrees from Across the Universe as you can get.

Written by Richard Curtis, and directed by Danny Boyle.

Himesh Patel plays Jack Malik, a failed musician who scrapes by playing children's birthday parties. Then he gets hit by bus.

But while he's unconscious from the accident, a worldwide calamity strikes, causing a global power outage. When he regains consciousness, he discovers that he's the only one on Earth who remembers the songs of the Beatles.

    UK Trailer:

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are rumored to make a cameo in it.

The trailer looks great. I'm one of those Beatles fans who always thinks their music sounds fresh, but this makes it even fresher. Seeing people in the movie hear the songs for the first time and watching their reactions is like remembering our own reactions to hearing it for the first time.

The review embargo lifted kind of early given that the film isn't being released until next week. Unfortunately, the reaction is not what Universal was probably hoping for. Right now it's got a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes from 30 reviews, which is technically fresh but borderline, as 60% is the minimum. And some of the negative reviews are very negative.

I'm still in because I think the trailer looks fun, and I like Danny Boyle and I like the Beatles, but usually when they drop the review embargo early it's because they expect glowing reviews (like Toy Story 4 got last week.) This isn't that.

Frankly, I don't pay much attention to Rotten Tomatoes as I think those critics are out of touch with their audience, as I seen too many films they gave bad reviews to, in which the general public has a favorable opinion of.

Rotten Tomatoes doesn't have critics for their own site to be out of touch with anything. They simply gather the reviews from other sites and post them all in one place. It's a compilation service. I find the score to be useful in telling which way the general consensus is going but I always read full reviews from critics I'm interested in.

At this point, RT indicates that the reviews for Yesterday are decidedly mixed. That's all.

I know what Rotten Tomatoes does and those critics are still out of touch with the general public. You can use that site any way you desire, I'm just saying how I feel about that site.

Yeah, I saw the concept and thought: I am so, 100% in. This is a film that will be a joy for me if for only the music.. but how it concludes the storyline seems to be a factor.. and that may be one where it is: great concept, hard to finish. But I'm eager and ready

Some quotes from a couple of early reviews. I'm guessing I love The Beatles too much to really enjoy this...

In "Yesterday," a world without the Beatles doesn't look any different, so there's little potency to the film's fantasy of the Beatles coming back.

Crowd-pleasing and sometimes enjoyable, but pretty damned dumb when you stop to think about it.

You're talking as though you've seen it already, but it comes out on Thursday night. I'm confused. Would you care to elaborate?

I liked the setup more than the follow-through, but still worth seeing if you're a Beatles fan.

I'm on the side that finds the concept kind of ridiculous. I'm also not a fan of the Beatles, so I'm likely not the audience for this film anyway.

I'm in for this weekend, but I've been doing more Thursday night shows than usual of late with the big Disney openings this summer, and I don't feel the need to rush out opening night on this. I'm planning on it for Saturday afternoon though.

Since I don't really follow the music scene, haven't for probably 20 years, it's like comfort food when you see a film with songs that you know the melody and words to, while also staying engaged with this "what if" scenario. As the main character scrambles to remember and record the classic Beatles songs, folks in my demographic (old as dirt) may find it enjoyable to go down musical memory lane, and that nostalgia-filled section worked for me. YMMV. Here's hoping a new generation discovers the Beatles once again.

I have no horse in the race regarding how good or 'eh' the movie actually turns out to be, but I'm going to see it this evening and I'll enjoy it for what it is, and enjoy hearing whatever they do with the music.

This will be at a really fine venue where I'll have the added advantage of hearing a friend play Beatles tunes on a great piano in the theater's cafe beforehand. So it's going to be a very pleasant evening out, regardless.
